  4. Good point.... there is one machinist in the area that I know of.... he is 74 years old and still does it part time...
  5. I've been fortunate to have a close friend that is a master mechanic here in our small town for the past 35 to 40 years. It seems that everyone in the area that has a vintage car or truck, takes it to Brian to have it worked on. But in a few years, he'll probably be retiring and I'm wondering what's going to happen ? Most of these small garages are being converted to a convenience markets to sell gas and food only. Those small town garages are going away and that would leave the dealership garages, I'm not trying to put down those mechanic, I think that they do an excellent job on todays vehicles, but I've heard stories that some are at a loss when it comes to vintage vehicles and trying to diagnose a problem without the aid of a scanner. Do you have a mechanic that you take your vintage vehicles to ? Steve
  6. Chris - I really like that color !! Your doing an excellent job !! Steve
  7. Joel - did you take lessons from Bill ? 😉
  8. Interesting few days.....I needed to have the alignment check on my '69 Chevrolet 3/4 ton truck, so I took it to the local ( nationally known ) tire store where I purchased the tires from a year or so ago to have the alignment done. The store manager had no clue what make or model the truck was ! After the paperwork was completed, one of the service tech went to the truck, looked inside and turned and walked away... now there is a meeting going on between the service techs, turns out that only one of the four techs could drive a standard shift , and he was the oldest of the four techs. Long story short, the truck needed a outer tie rod ends ( passenger side had a slight bend ) truck is still up on the lift today, the store manager ordered the wrong parts, he didn't realized there was a difference between 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton.... 🙄 Steve
  9. Been there.... I ordered a set of white lettered BF Goodrich tires for my Monte Carlo SS in the summer of 2021, by the Spring of 2022, they were brown, I could not get them to stay white. Contacted Coker, explained the situation with the tires and they were aware of the issues ( they said that there was a "bad lot" which cause bleed thru ) They sent me a new set tires with return shipping label's for the old set. So far, no issues..... I never had any issues with my original Goodyear Eagle tires...still white
  10. Twenty-seven years married and she has been in the detached garage 4x just to see if I was alive...😄 she has her animals, I have my cars - happy life ! Steve
  11. Ex98thdrill - absolutely beautiful fire apparatus that you have ! The American LaFrance brings back memories of the 1948 engine that our company once had... It was originally out of Long Island, NY and donated to our Fire Company when we established back in 1969.... here is a photo:
  12. Thanks Phil, that's good to know ! I'm figuring three more years, but who knows, could be sooner.... plus it's closer to Hershey compared to where we are now. Steve
  13. ex98thdrill - great information that you have listed, I appreciate it! I love the picture you posted of the Fire Apparatus.... I'm a ex-Fire Chief here in NY,( I served back in the 1980's and 1990's ) and your correct about the retired brush trucks. Our department retired a 1972 3/4 ton Ford with a utility body back in the late 90's I believe, that truck had under 10,000 miles on her... I still see it around today, the man that purchase it has welding tanks set up in the bed. I would like to see more pictures of your Fire Apparatus ! Steve ** My company vehicle back in the 90's......
  14. Yeah Phil, I remember people complaining to GM about those brake lines .... Delaware is on our list of locations to retire to in a few years ! Steve
  15. Wow... Phil, my 04 GMC had a lot of rust issues.... granted, I drove that truck all year here in NY, but I took great care of it, pressure washing the underside during the winter months, the body was spotless, but then the cab corners started to rust then it went into the rockers.... then it just kept getting worse ( brake lines started to go and the frame as well ) the leaf spring hangers rusted / broke and the leaf spring went into the underside of the bed. The spent a lot of $$ on having sections of the frame repaired....it was a loosing battle, sad part is it only had 60,000 miles on her when I sold it. If not for the rust issues, I would still have it today.
  16. Hi Marty.....I just went onto the local Chevrolet Dealership website to get an ideal on the full size - STICKER SHOCK !! LOL, unbelievable, low range going around $50K to a $84K loaded truck.... I didn't realized how much that they have gone up. 2004 I purchased a new 1500 GMC which I paid $27K. By the way, my daughter is still stationed in New Orleans.
  17. My old 2007 GMC 1500 van will need to be replace soon. The few times that I tow with it, I never had an issue. I've been looking at the new Chevrolet Colorado truck, the specs say that it has 310HP, 7700 lbs max available towing and 6250 lbs GVWR. The cars that would be trailer are under 4000 lbs.... Just looking for some advise from the towing experts here if a vehicle this size ( mid-size truck ) could handle it.... Thanks ! Steve
  18. In my years in the Fire Service, I've seen everything related to auto accidents.... one incident that always stood out was a Subaru Wagon vs. gasoline tanker truck. Long story short, snow conditions caused the tanker to jack knifed, hitting the wagon, the wagon absorbed the force of the impact ( folded like a accordion ). The driver of the Subaru was unhurt, he was standing on the shoulder of the road with his briefcase - he was a GM engineer heading to work at the GM Tarrytown plant in Westchester County, NY. I'll never forget that morning ! Steve
  19. Excellent information there..... Thanks for the info !
  20. I need to replace the gear lube on my 4 speed manual transmission ( 435 closed-ratio ). Any suggestions on brand / weight that I should be using ? Synthetic oils ? The truck has 88,000 miles..... Thanks ! Steve
