That looks really nice, is he saying it is original paint? Would be nice to see underhood and chassis photos, also know what exactly had been done mechanically.

That seems to be what the seller is implying but its not really clear is it? Unfortunately they provided no under the hood photos or of the chassis.

It's a nice car, I was looking at it at the meet three weeks ago. Price is in the ballpark for a nice driver, which the car is. I forget who owns it.....I'm certain it is a friend of mine........

In my opinion, a most impractical automobile.  I would never leave it unattended, even at a show. It just begs for some low-life to mess with it, radiator ornament first. It's not a "Cars and Coffee" driver. Just how usable are the upholstery materials and the silk curtains? Then there's the reliability factor of a 93 year old apparently "original" car...and who's going to do the inevitable repairs, and at what cost?

As for it's future, I see it as a limited use trailer queen or a museum piece. My $40k would be better spent elsewhere.

When the seller says "cash" does that actually mean 40K in 100 dollar bills?

Good question, bet answer is yes!

I once had deal made on buying a 1910 Model 36 Pierce-Arrow.  A while back, it was 60k.  I wanted to wire transfer or cashiers check (pre scams on such) but he said no, cash in a paper bag.

I wanted a basis, documented, for purchase price of car. He wouldn’t budge, nor would I.

In retrospect, wish I’d done it, but that amount in cash is scary.  A friend told me basis is easy, just write a check made out to seller for amount, mark check “refused” and pay in cash.

The cash likely never made it to any bank, but to maybe a safe deposit box.

Having driven a Pierce eight thousands and thousands of miles, I can assure you assumptions are not accurate. Yes, people actually drive cars instead of looking at them. Like the husband and wife who drove 900 miles round trip to the Pierce meet last month in New York. And they are in their 70’s. They have 27k miles on their 1931 Pierce eight in the last decade. Here is the car…….

You couldn't be more wrong. Here I am at tonight's cruise night in downtown Akron, Ohio. Drove it 20 miles each way, in rush-hour traffic on an 85-degree day. I even left it for more than an hour to go have dinner at a restaurant 1/4 mile away. No issues, nobody messed with it, nobody stole anything, nobody even touched it. It's still just a car.

As far as leaving an old car unattended……why not. There were 35 Pierce Arrow’s left out in a hotel parking lot for a week last month. They were all fine. And it rained on show day. All the cars were still out on the show field. They are just cars…….nothing more, nothing less. Here is the lot full of cars………no big deal.

The seller wants $40K in cold, hard cash? That's a tall order. Sounds a bit arrogant.

For a pre 1938 Pierce Arrow, Packard or other similar classic that is absolutely sorted and ready to tour the replacement cost of sorting by a qualified third party could easily be $20K or more.  So $40K might be a bargain.  Depends what you intend to do with it…

Clearly you don't roll with Pierce-Arrow Society members!  🙂 Those of us with easily removable radiator ornaments (meaning 1933 and earlier) invest in plain "parking caps" to put on while we're having a meal or visiting an attraction.

Better safe than sorry, I guess.

You're lucky they don't have "mag" wheels or automatic transmissions.

Funny a friend of mine always wants cash. In the little town I live in, it would take the bank several days to be able to give me 40000 in cash. A couple of years ago, I wanted 25000 in cash. I was dealing with a local BOA, they said it would take 4 days to get that much cash for me.
