suchan
Thanks for posting. The first one I've seen. The woodgrain looks better on a station wagon, though.
trimacar
Very unusual, I’d bet wherever you showed up with that, everyone else would be glad you owned it…if you catch my drift…. Then again, as used car salesmen have stated for a long time, there’s an ass for every seat…. I’m sure someone will fall in love with it, hope it finds a good home… Edited November 12, 2022 by trimacar (see edit history)
m-mman
Mercury applied wood grain to their Parklane convertible in 1968 also. Called it “Yacht paneling” I always wondered what market research lead both companies to offer the same option at the same time? Jim Skelly
What led them to do this was probably the popularity of faux wood-grained paneled wagons and it was distinctive.
JamesR
I also think this is a very cool car. I'm wondering about the faux wood grain, though. Does it look faded or a little washed out to you guys? If so, is it possible to restore some color to the paneling or darken it a little bit? Old English probably wouldn't work, as this isn't real wood, but might there be some other trick?
The 55er
Chrysler called this "Sportsgrain" and yes it is somewhat faded out.

I don't think there is a good alternative to redoing the vinyl film. The good news is that the edge trim appears to all be there.
Jim Skelly
One of these was in Hemmings Classic Car a number of years ago. The owner contacted 3M, who originated the vinyl decal and made new decals for the owner. 1

For sale by Dealer on Ebay auction: 1968 Chrysler Newport Convertible: 1 of 175 "Sportsgrain Option" Newport Convertibles ever produced in 1968 - Initial bid: $1,000 - Call Gateway Classic Cars of Fort Lauderdale FL - Phone: 866 286-3719 Link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/165786484616/1968-Chrysler-Newport-Sportsgrain-Convertible Seller's Description: 1968 Chrysler Newport Sportsgrain Convertible Vehicle Original VIN : CE27G8C312890 Mileage: 11,751 Engine: 383 CID V8 Transmission: Automatic Exterior Color: Yellow Interior Color: White For Sale By: Dealer Gateway Classic Cars is excited to offer this classy 1968 Chrysler Newport Convertible. The Newport was a name used by Chrysler for both a hardtop body designation and also for its lowest priced model between 1961 and 1981. Chrysler first used the Newport name on a 1940 show car, of which five vehicles were produced. The Newport continued the tradition of a large, comfortable luxurious coupe and sedan, while offering a modestly priced product in comparison to the Chrysler New Yorker and Chrysler Imperial. This elegant 1968 Chrysler Newport Convertible is in a beautiful light yellow paint, with an off-white interior. The mid-year offering on the 1968 Newport was the "Sportsgrain Option", similar to the simulated woodgrain exterior bodyside trim, on the Town and Country station wagons of this period. Indeed, this alluring 1968 Newport Convertible is only 1 of 175 "Sportsgrain Option" Newport Convertibles ever produced in 1968. That said, under the hood of this charming convertible, is the potent 383 cu in (6.3 Lit) V8 with 290 hp, combined with a 3-speed automatic transmission. ***More photos on the Ebay listing. John_S_in_Penna
"Sportsgrain" is an entirely made-up word. Can you imagine the marketing meeting in the 1960's when the Chrysler men were trying to come up with a name? "How about Yacht Deck?" "No, it makes our car sound like a boat." "How about Panel Side?" "No, it sounds like a family room." "How about Wood Grain?" No... "How about Wood Sport?" No... "How about Sports Grain?" "That's it! We'll go with that!"
