Doug Bowers
1925 25/27 sedan Looking forward to getting it running. Dropped gas tank today full of shellac. Oil pan down, no shrapnel or grinding. Oil pump a bit sloppy, be looking into that. Cooling system appears water tight. Otherwise it should run! Anyone have a line on 500x22 or 600x22 tires? Coker is 4 months out on production... Edited September 23, 2021 by Doug Bowers (see edit history)
John S.
Doug, Welcome to the AACA, and the Forum. Really nice Buick, and one neat project. Keep us posted . Thanks, John
plymouthcranbrook
Welcome. I echo John's remark about the car. Looks great.
TAKerry
Welcome aboard! Great looking car. No idea on tires but there are several companies that specialize in that variety. But, from what I have heard and read the time frame seems normal now.
dibarlaw
Doug: Welcome to the World of 1925 Buick ownership. One year only engine, last year for the starter/generator etc. You may wish to also put this in the Buick Pre-War section. I know the 22" tires are problematic as only the 600X22s are available. Keep me in mind for parts as we have quite a network of other 1925 owners. I had to buy the complete drive line from a 1925 Standard coupe being hot rodded just to get the correct wheels 22" rims and tires for my car. I see your car has an Oregon plate on it. The parts group originally came from Bend, Oregon. It would be comic that we had been trying to get parts out to those in need for nearly a year and a half.. No other interest on the west coast... So my friend who had been storing all this for me finally arranged to ship the remainder from Vancouver Wash. to Penn. Let us know where you are at and how we can help. The first batch of parts sent Feb. 2020. Refinished wheels and rims. Latest batch of parts and engine brought home last week.
Doug Bowers
I saw that ad when I was first looking at and discussing price with owner of my car. Looks like a good score on your lot, recall asking price wasn't all that bad. Any issues peculiar to 1925 running gear you're.aware of? I've been restoring antique motorcycles for many years so making parts isn't generally an issue. Anything left in Bend that you may want to part with? I'm 2 hrs east of Vancouver. Hubert_25-25
Doug, Welcome to the Buick Pre War Forum. There are only a few of us with 1925 Buicks and we have been learning and helping each other. Really glad to hear that you dropped the pan. The oil pump can also be a weak point. The oil pump drive pin can be very worn as shown in my photo. The oil pressure relief spring is a good spring to have replaced as I have seen others with the spring in pieces. I sent my pump to Egge in California and they had to put a bushing on the driven gear to get it to run straight again and not eat into the end plate. They also installed a new spring, and checked that the pump relief pressure was correct. Below is a link with several notes on specific areas that a new owner needs to be aware of. In particular see the posting on February 16 2020. If you cannot get copies of all the articles that I point out in the new Buick owners notes, let me know. There are a lot of pot metal parts that need to be addressed. https://forums.aaca.org/topic/340150-1923-23-45-hasnt-run-in-years-needs-who-knows-what/ 6.00-22 is all that will fit the car. I do have one used one that is free for the cost of shipping, but it is only good for maybe 5 mph tops. I had quotes for tires from Coker, Lucas, and Universal so no tires at all 3 places? dibarlaw
I agree with Hugh in all he has mentioned. The drive pin in my 1925 Master was just like the one on Hugh's car. (I also have a 1925 Master Touring) I had both Master and Standard pumps rebushed and I am maintaining 25 lbs pressure. Before 5-8. While you have the bottom end opened up check all the oiling manifold tubes to the main bearings. I had one where the solder joint failed and the vertical tube to the Y joint at the rear of the block was split. The previous owner had RTV blue sealer here! Just ask as Hugh and I have plenty of documentation photos of what has been done to our cars. I am planning on sending some of the Oregon parts to Hershey unless spoken for. Do you have the engine side pans for your car? I have an extra set. I also have at least 2 extra Starter/Generators. Yes, the 1925 Standard cars are not as plentyful as 1926 and 1927s. With the bright colors on your car it looks to have been re-done in the 1960s or 1970s. Hopefully some things were sorted out at the time. We need more photos! Hubert_25-25
Looking at Larry's pictures also reminds me that the screen had failed on the oil pick up, so inspect that as well. The photo shows what I used to fix it. Hugh
Mark Shaw
Doug, 2 hours East puts you close to the Tri-Cities. I am the guy in Vancouver. We occasionally drive to Spokane to visit my son, so please send me a PM with your address so I can stop by to help if needed. I still have lots of parts you might need because I too have a 1924 Master series Buick & lots of spares that you might need.
Doug Bowers
Thanks all for the info and offers. Mark Shaw...I'm in Goldendale, right off 14. Not certain at this point how far I'm going to take this project. Body has been bondoed before along with other half a** repairs .Interior not bad though normal wear. Odometer shows 53K but we all know what that means. Oil pump apart n drive plate resurfaced, making a bushing for the drive gear, pretty sloppy in the bore. Surprised Buick didn't address this in production. Rod n main bearings nice. Glad the PO didnt try to make it run as oil pump choked with sludge. I did get a spare SG unit with the car. Picked up new battery last night and run test the SG today. Engine turns easy with crank no stuck valves, sorry, I can't hand crank fast enough for compression check. Did get 2 good front fenders and 2 good rear fenders with the deal along with new top fabric, PO had good intentions... I'll get it running first then decide on tire investment, right now it moves in n out of the shop
