  1. Not sure what I did....took off the gear cover while helper depressed starter pedal. No damage, gears meshed. He pushed starter pedal 2nd time and it all works! Now it runs, 10# oil pressure at idle hot, drives, shifts, stops. Now to decide what to do with it. I restore classic motorcycles and this elephant is filling the shop. If someone wants it I'd sell it.....
  2. When the starter pedal is depressed it raises the copper brush on the large commutator and lowers the carbon brush to the smaller commutator, exactly backwards from what it should. Seems this is backwards as the the copper brush, one would think, is the start side. The SG motors in the correct direction with the battery connected positive ground. Seems I have 2 issues here. Someone had turned the commutators and undercut the mica...it doesnt look like they've had much use since this was done ....likely(?) connection wrong and linkage reversed somehow ...onward
  3. Looking at the schematic I printed from the AACA pre war Buick forum..it shows the commutator of the SG rotating ccw viewed from the brush end of the SG unit. Mine is rotating in a CW direction when being motored when the switch turned to the on position, and it doesn't turn very fast. Battery connected negative ground. Will this condition cause the starter function to not work?
  4. Cleaned commutators with com stone, raked the mica gaps (plenty low not protruding, looks like undercut done recently) No. 2 switch terminal when connected direct to battery (6.56 V) motors the generator. At this point theres batt voltage to the starter brush. As soon as starter engaged motoring stops n nothing else happens though still batt voltage at the starter brush. Checking commutators with ohm meter finding nothing to ground. What am I missing? As in previous post I don't really want to remove the SG due to condition of the shaft. Looks like I can cut the shaft ahead of the support bearing n add another coupling or better yet have it on the bench where I can fab a new shaft out of stainless. How much forward room do I need to get the unit out or can it just tilt up n forward? TIA
  5. If anyone interested there's a 1925 Buick pickup on Portland (OR) Craigslist, claims only 46 produced??
  6. Some previous "tech" had installed a bent nail in the Oldham coupling and with pipe wrench divots on the pump shaft i'm not sure I want to remove the SG unless I really have to. If I've read things correctly the unit should motor with a jumper from the battery post to the No.2 switch terminal connection ...i get a weak arc and no motor action. Comments?
  7. Just the rail off last night, those rusty nail sure grip well! No studs just nails....
  8. Thanks all for the info and offers. Mark Shaw...I'm in Goldendale, right off 14. Not certain at this point how far I'm going to take this project. Body has been bondoed before along with other half a** repairs .Interior not bad though normal wear. Odometer shows 53K but we all know what that means. Oil pump apart n drive plate resurfaced, making a bushing for the drive gear, pretty sloppy in the bore. Surprised Buick didn't address this in production. Rod n main bearings nice. Glad the PO didnt try to make it run as oil pump choked with sludge. I did get a spare SG unit with the car. Picked up new battery last night and run test the SG today. Engine turns easy with crank no stuck valves, sorry, I can't hand crank fast enough for compression check. Did get 2 good front fenders and 2 good rear fenders with the deal along with new top fabric, PO had good intentions... I'll get it running first then decide on tire investment, right now it moves in n out of the shop
  9. Just brought home this 25\27 Buick and these guages aren't for this car. Oil pressure gauge shows 20# when connected to 20# regulated air. Ammeter moved when battery connected. Pay postage n it's yours
  10. I saw that ad when I was first looking at and discussing price with owner of my car. Looks like a good score on your lot, recall asking price wasn't all that bad. Any issues peculiar to 1925 running gear you're.aware of? I've been restoring antique motorcycles for many years so making parts isn't generally an issue. Anything left in Bend that you may want to part with? I'm 2 hrs east of Vancouver.
  11. 1925 25/27 sedan Looking forward to getting it running. Dropped gas tank today full of shellac. Oil pan down, no shrapnel or grinding. Oil pump a bit sloppy, be looking into that. Cooling system appears water tight. Otherwise it should run! Anyone have a line on 500x22 or 600x22 tires? Coker is 4 months out on production...
  12. Want to remove ragged top fabric on 25/27 sedan. The gutter that binds the top to the wood work...is that held on with screws or nails. Guessing that it gets worked off carefully with wedges etc? TIA
