Any AACA members going to Vanderbrink auction previews in MN?

Any AACA members going to the Vanderbrink auction previews in Maple Plain, MN? On the May 23 and/or the May 30-31 preview in Stillwater, MN. 

 

I'm on the east coast and interested in bidding on several cars. Descriptions provided online are so vague and questions forwarded to the auction co. for more info go unanswered. I'd be glad to reimburse a knowledgeable AACA member going to the previews with a food/drink/restaurant gift card/gift certificate, etc., if they could inspect a couple of cars while they were on site.  It's amazing to me how the descriptions can be so vague when they depend on out-of-state bidders with the online auction procedures. Poor pictures and never a mention of undercarriage, floors, rockers, etc. 

 

I've done this several times for club members who wanted a set of ‘eyes' on something that was in my backyard. Thanks in advance. 

 

Bought a car years ago from a "reputable" online auction co. in illinois. They had one of their 'expert staff' describe the car in a ‘walkaround session’ while I was on the phone. I bought the car and shipped it east. It proved be junk. When it arrived in VA I discovered the floors were full of patches and pop rivets and the door post pillars were so rotted you had to pick up the door and force it to close. When I called them back the guy said, “What did you expect me to do, get on my knees and look underneath the car?" They never would make it right. Bad experience.

RM did a great job with their 100% online Palm Beach auction.  A specialist would take any pictures you wanted, and video.  They would share it with you but post it to the lot description for any other bidders to see too.

 

btw, this is the auction with all the Avanti’s?

I've bid in a Vanderbrink auction before and Yvette was pretty responsive. The reason the photos and descriptions are not great has everything to do with the cost of the auction.   

 

This is an R2 4 speed car.   Very cool and I'll bet it brings decent money.

An important item to look at on the Studebaker hardtops and Avantis is the torque boxes runnng along the outside beneath the floor.   It they are gone it is expensive.   Minnesota is known for salting roads with the resulting damage to autos.   I have spoken to the caretaker about some of the cars when they were first put up for sale and there is rust to be considered.   I also spoke to a 

former  owner of the Studillac who said the rust was extensive on the car.  So just be careful.

I will not bid on anything (full garage!) but I know Ken’s son Greg and will meet him there for a tour. If anyone else has SERIOUS interest in a particular car I can give you a report also. I have purchased four cars from them over the last three years. I deal with Jenny. They work on a almost zero budget, fast, cheap, wam bam. Not everything is done as listed.....they change on the fly. Parts will get tossed into bigger and bigger piles as the day goes on if things are slow. Cars and parts are auctioned at the same time.....makes things difficult. There is NO help loading or moving anything. Since I know them, they let us remove items as soon as they are paid. Don’t plan it it to happen to you. The load up after the sale is a Chinese fire drill.If you win a car, have someone stand by it or parts will disappear. Dirt bags show up, and will wait for you to go make payment and steal all the jewlery......ash trays, lenses, mascots, ect. Last summer I had to tell three people to get out of my car, as all the chrome was in boxes, and they were going to steal whatever they could. That said, the auction people are nice, and fair. It’s just they charge the sellers a pass through on the labor to run the show, so that’s why it’s under staffed. As any auction, buyer beware. And two more cents.........seems they specialize in junk......I have never seen a good car at any of their sales. I think the running/easy sellable stuff gets pulled ahead of time and brokered out.

Can’t give up all my special secrets................I must confess, one guy at the last auction pissed me off, so I ran the price up on a Pierce I didn’t want. Felt good! He’s still sitting on it. Bottom feeders really entertained me, they have no clue.

Every car I bought from this auction house.......from three different auctions.......was cut up for parts. I have never seen them sell “nice stuff”.

Guess this is a topic that isn't mentioned often, "Parts Cars". The remains get sold off, then someone decides to "Hot Rod" the pile and is crucified for their actions. Bob

Like I said......Another sad issue.......most of the parts missing off the car are often in piles of junk at the sale. Last summer, a bunch of Pierce parts were in a pile, and the guy who bought them then tried to sell them to me five minutes later for ten times he paid for the entire pile. I informed him they were for a 1920’s series six , and they had little to no value. He insisted they fit my car.........anyways, he listed them on eBay for asinine prices with a make an offer button. We had a field day with him offering five dollars an item. It’s the small victories that I cherish the most!

(Me chuckling like a loon!) You are SO-O bad! But I do so love it when those kind of fools get what they deserve! It does however, sadden me when decent (although not truly desirable) usable parts get lost in the process. The sad fact is, that there are a lot of parts for untold thousands of collector cars that there will simply never be enough need for even a small fraction of the surviving extra parts. One really does need to KNOW the collectibles they chose to deal in. The difference between the proverbial "gold mine" and a ten cent piece of scrap is often in minute details.

At the sale in Springfield Michigan last year, there was a Pierce Arrow that was offered to me for free 12 years ago about 150 miles from my home. I was in their yard and had an empty trailer and passed on it............years later it's in Michigan at the auction and I bet lunch no one would be stupid enough to bid on it....( couldn't believe someone was stupid enough to haul it ten miles)......I bought lunch, the guy paid 2500 for it as he lived twenty miles from the sale, one week late it was on ebay for 8000.

I guess to many any post-war Studebaker is akin to junk. That having been said, I guess that by the standard of dollar value of most all post war independent marques, they too are junk. Of course if we extended that same criteria to pre-war cars we would have to consider Pierce Arrows to be junk, because of their relative value to other luxury cars of the era. I own both marques, and I don't take umbrage with anyone that doesn't know the difference between value and cheap. There is value here you just have to know where to look.

I just got clearence from the wife. I'll be heading down there today to have a

 look about. Let me know what you want pictures of.
