#2 Let's get Charlotte to #1

Recommended Posts

The fact that they missed nominating Hershey

means, to me, that the contest lacks meaning.

(It may also mean that the U. S. A. Today newsmen

who came up with the election aren't all that knowledgeable!)

Hershey is much bigger and much more diverse

than Charlotte, and includes the quality of cars

seen in some of the concourses they included.

And if they want to think even more broadly, the annual

Power Big Meet in Vasteras, Sweden is MANY TIMES

the size of Hershey, and features thousands of

American cars!

John, true and frankly USA was apprised of the fact they missed Hershey and other top events in the US which is what the poll was meant to be.  I know because I wrote the emails!!  However, it is what it is and there is certainly no reason why we cannot support one of our regions in this contest!  The contest is not without meaning to those that were nominated.

Because an award you get by stuffing the ballot box is definitely something to be proud of...

I love it at Charlotte!  It's one of the friendliest events in the country.  Ya got my vote!

The U. S. A. Today "contest" is almost like voting for

America's #1 pet:  Do you like monkeys, goldfish, squirrels,

hamsters, or gerbils?  And then leave dogs and cats out of the running!

Conclusion:  "Oh, goldfish!  Goldfish are preferred above all other pets!"

Actually, their contest mixes categories--new-car shows,

concours events, and antique-car shows.  They aren't comparable!

Steve, I think we should have numerous members

send e-mails to U. S. A. Today to inform them of their error!

They might have thought you were simply the proponent

for your own club;  but the force of numbers might make them

at least think twice.

What was their response to you?

If the newsmen are not interested in accuracy, then perhaps

their "contest" was just something they dreamed up

to increase attention to their site---

John, this is simple.  If people have the initiative to write to USA they should.  I immediately saw that Hershey and other very important events were missing from the poll and I felt compelled to write.  Standing on the sidelines is something I have never done right or wrong.

The fact is it is THEIR contest and if they think mixed different types of automotive events is fine then so be it.  If you had a contest of a purely antique car event their would be the obvious same winner each year in my mind and thusly no need for a contest!  From a standpoint of international interest, size scope of activities, years of operation, attendance of other clubs "Hershey" has to top them all.

Naturally their goal is to gain names and contacts for the benefit of USA Today.  Smart marketing on their part.  This was not about news!  I am sure they aren't extremely worried about the quality of the survey! They have a bunch of other non-car related polls going on as well. The experts they used were not necessarily tuned in to our antique car hobby in my mind.  No answer yet but hopefully the message got to them loud and clear.  I gave them facts and figures so at least that might get their attention.

Look, this isn't a matter of life or death nor is it something people will remember much more than a few months.  My goal is to give an AACA Region some extra publicity and make at least a cup of lemonade out of lemons.  Those that want to support our region or event of their choice are certainly free to do so or NOT.  Me, I am supporting our region and even throwing a few votes to The Elegance which I am very proud of and pleased that it is in the same poll as Pebble and Amelia!

Joe it ain't stuffing if everybody has the same opportunity...lighten up fellows. You guys are grouchy!

Reminds me how some of the local car shows are played out. They gather their buddies and vote for a friend no matter if or not his car is better than the next guy.

Peer "judging" is simply a popularity contest, as is this "top ten" list.  Personally I don't lose a lot of sleep over meaningless trophies.

  • 2 weeks later...

Of the 10 diverse car events nominated,

"Back to the '50's" in St. Paul, Minnesota

was voted the favorite.  Here is the site's

description of that event:

"The Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul hosts Back To The 50's

(June 17-19, 2016) each summer – a celebration of hot rods, customs

and classics with nearly 12,000 registered vehicles. The event also includes live 50's music, a flyover and a gigantic swap meet, as well as activities and games for kids and 'tweens."

Has anyone been to "Back to the '50's"?  What is it like?

  Is it good?

"The Elegance," the concours event held at the Hershey Hotel,

came in 6th in the popular vote, while Charlotte came in 2nd.

Did The Elegance hold their own get-out-the-vote campaign, perhaps?

On an e-mail which was sent out to people on the AACA Museum's list,

someone at the museum wrote:

"Congratulations to The Elegance at Hershey

Voted One of the 10 Best Shows in the country
from USA TODAY 10Best!

Thanks to everyone who voted over the past few weeks."

If you haven't been to "Back to the '50's" you have missed a really great event. I have only been once back in the 90's but it was a fantastic show. It is a strong mix of modifieds with a sprinkling of stock but just the energy and kinetic feel of the show made it a lot of fun. There were alway cars in motion, as owners cruised the show and found new places to park for awhile. I went to another state (different state) wide street rod show that year to see if they were all set up that way and it was more static and not as much fun.

I for one voted (every day) because why not?!  Took me less then 1 minute of my time.  Of course it's a popularity contest but what's wrong with that?  I hope there's a huge increase in participants and spectators next year in 2017.  I know I'll be there :)

No, the Elegance did nothing to promote voting for the event other than possibly a post on our social media site.  Pleased but a bit perplexed why we did so well but we will take it.  Great publicity for an incredible event which we are very proud of let alone that we will have donated close to a $1,000,000 in just 6 years.
