My wife and I arrived in Elkhart, Indiana (east of South Bend) at around 5:30 today. I'm looking forward to meeting a lot of you over the next two days, seeing some beautiful Buicks, and touring some great car museums. We've already visited one museum. We stopped in Kokomo, Indiana on the way here today at the Kokomo Automotive museum. I'll be posting pictures of that soon. Tomorrow, it's the forum breakfast at 7 AM followed by a day full of museums. I'll take plenty of pictures and post them here when I can. We just came back from a local bar and grill where the burgers were delicious and the 32 oz. draft beers were on special. I'm feeling pretty good right now! :P:cool:

My Wife and I returned home safely late last night. We had an amazing time and met a lot of great folks. Not to mention seeing all of the awesome cars. I'm in the process of organizing and re-sizing the ton of pictures I took at the meet and all of the museums. Hopefully, those will be posted sometime late tonight.

Paul, I'm gonna have to disagree with you on the Vegemite! Man, that stuff was gross. If you want to get an idea of the flavor, imagine if you made jelly out of boiled down soy sauce and spread it on toast. Must be one of those "acquired tastes". :P

Shadetree/Robert great to meet you and Mrs, Shadetree in person. Glad you made it home safe (wait last night, really you drove all the way home, Woah... I saw you off in the distance in from of NATMUS when we arrived at ACD around 1030 yesterday. We only made it to Cincy, but that was by design as we stopped at the in-laws').

Great to meet you too Brian. Yes, we made it all the way home. We stayed in Auburn WAAAAY too long that day. It was very late when we got home but we took turns driving/napping and made it all the way. Mrs. Shadetree had to be at work early the next morning. I completely mismanaged our time that day and as a result missed out on a visit to Dale's (aka smithbrother) house in Indianapolis. I guess I caught up looking at all of the amazing exhibits.

NOTES: Pictures #4 and #5 car belongs to Adam Martin (AKA smartin), Pictures #11 and #13 car belongs to Willie (AKA oldtank), Picture #14 car belongs to Mike and Nancy Book, Picture #15-#17 was a handbuilt replica of the Wildcat II. I caught them changing a flat in the parking lot.

Robert & Mrs Shadetree,

Sorry I did not get to meet you both but I only was able to come on Friday (without my car no less) so moved around through the swap meet (with some success!) and talking to as many as I could in that all too short a time. Glad your travels went uneventfully and enjoyed the Meet, I know I enjoyed myself.

Any chance you could talk me through the picture resizing that you say you did? I know it has been discussed on the Forums somewhere before but can't seem to locate it. If it's better served you could PM me..... my new digital has a much bigger file than my old one and cropping (which I was able to do before) won't allow me to get them to a size for posting. Thanks for any help or direction. I have a few that I would like to post on my thread and right now not having any luck.

Doug, sorry we didn't run into each other. We were there Friday but not for long. We attended the forum breakfast at 7 am and then we left to spend the rest of the day at the various museums in the area with a stop in Amish country too.

I can help you with the image re-sizing. First, I need some info. Are you using Windows? If so, what version? Do you know if it's 32-bit or 64-bit (I can help you find this info. if necessary). I can't help if you have an Apple. PM me with the details and I'll try to help.

Yes, it was a very well done replica. I talked to the owner a bit and he said that they made large molds for the body. The way he talked, I got the impression that they were going to offer these molds for a price to anyone who wanted to make their own. It was a beautiful creation. Wish I could have talked to him longer to find out more details but he was extremely busy and more than a little agitated which is completely understandable.

Lol, I asked him if I could drive it around the block! Just kidding.:P Apparently, when they opened the trailer the car had a flat tire. The owner didn't go into detail but he indicated that the flat tire was one in a long line of problems that they had trying to get the car to the meet. I did pick up his sockets for him when he dropped them so maybe that helped a bit!

It seems very strange to see "South Bend or Bust" in a Buick forum instead of (as it so often is) in the Studebaker forum.

Robert, many of the cars (including one beautiful Woodie) in your photos have their hoods opening sideways. I've never seen that (even as a child and many of my relatives had Buicks). Is it a factory option or some kind of customizing? If the latter... why?

Yes, I'm ignorant about Buicks. Always loved them and never could afford them.

Yes, the side opening hood was a standard option on Buicks for several years. 1952 was the last time it was used. The hood has double swing-a-way type latches on both sides. The hood can be opened from either side or you can release both sides and lift the hood off completely. The mechanism is operated by pulling a knob on the interior near the corner of the dash, one knob on either side of the car. This is one of my favorite things about my own car. I own a 1952 Special. Removing the hood to work on the engine makes things a lot easier. By the way, welcome to the Buick section and be sure to check back soon for the Studebaker museum pictures.

I never spoke to the gent but, the car was flooded during the meet. This car was outside the doors to the registration room without the top up. That was fine till there was a strong storm Wednesday afternoon. From what I heard ( I was on one of the tours) there was severe rain and wind. I had left my rear two windows open on the GS, maybe an inch at the top and my back seat was wet on both sides of the car. The car was just dumped on. One of the vendors I know said the wind was so strong lifting his pop up canopy that two guys could not hold it and it took off crashing across the parking lot. Several vendors had no time to protect things and I heard a lot of literature was soaked. Later on Thursday I saw this guy vacuuming up the water from the trunk and the interior.

Just to correct the information on Post #10, my car is the fourth photo, the light blue, medium blue combination with cream wire wheels. The one on #3, belongs to Chuck Nixon, the deep Maxwell Blue combination. Sorry, I was busy judging and was not able to be by the car. 1941 was the first year for the two-way opening hood. In 1941, and I believe into the later '40s, the latch was on the side of the car on the fender. I suspect it was switched to a cable pull in 1950, but don't know that for certain. I need to replace one of those in my '52 Roadmaster if I ever get around to working on it.

And, the AFTER MARKET folks have made a lot of money by reproducing the 41 assembly for street rods. They have up graded it with billet aluminum pieces and rod ends.

It is fun to borrow a friend at a car show, one on each side and remove the hood, surprising how many folks didn't know that was possible. They then walk up and start staring at the assembly attached to the fender tops.

Sorry about that John S. Stupid mistake on my part. I knew that car was yours because I stood there admiring it for quite some time. Typing finger went rogue on me and hit a "3" instead of a "4".:P I corrected that post.

JohnD, no wonder he seemed "agitated". Perfectly understandable. I hope his bad luck doesn't keep him from attending future meets.
