City names - marques and models

Recommended Posts

Driving home from work a couple of days ago and was looking at the tailgate of a Toyota Tacoma and found myself wondering how many different marques and/or models have/had city names. Here are some I came up with (and I know there are tons I've missed) – can you add to the list?</SPAN>

Bristol – Bristol</SPAN>

Checker – Manhattan</SPAN>

Chevy – Malibu, Biscayne, Monte Carlo</SPAN>

Dodge – Newport, Aspen, Monaco</SPAN>

Kia – Santa Fe, Sedona</SPAN>

Mercury – Monterey, Milan</SPAN>

Muntz – Hollywood (seems to me other marques used this one)</SPAN>

Plymouth - Sundance</SPAN>

Pontiac – Pontiac</SPAN>

Toyota – Tacoma, Avalon

</SPAN>

Suppose one could come up with a number of variations on this – whimsical names (Scamp & Bluebird come to mind quickly), places (Catalina, Yukon), jobs (Matador, Mountaineer), animals (lots of these), etc.</SPAN>

I've got to get the radio fixed so I have something else to do when driving...

Hmm... I can't think of any Buick named for a city. Riviera is a region and Somerset is an English county. There's a Century City in California but that might have been named for the car. Both the car and the mountain were named in honour of Rainier beer. Okay, there's Lucerne but I cheated by using Google, so that doesn't count.

Hyundai Tucson is a relatively recent one that amuses me as when I was growing up in Tucson it was a decidedly uncool place and no one would have thought about naming anything after it. Along with Arizona place names there is a Kia Sedona.

Previous poster mentioned Plymouth Belvedere but the city in Illinois is spelled differently.

If I recall correctly, Chevrolet pickups had a Scottsdale version once.

@helfen . . . Dodge "Aspen", also used on a later Chrysler model SUV.

@ply33 . . . we thought Tucson was pretty neat when we stayed there one night, especially after touring "Old Tuscon" and seeing the same hills we'd seen on many westerns shot in that area . . . we were there in 1963. "Scottsdale" was the mid-line trim on Chevy pickups from '73 until the 1980s, with "Silverado" first being a trim level and later becoming the model name for C/K Chevy trucks in the later 1990s.

Plymouth . . . Belmont

Dodge . . . Meadowbrook

Chevy . . . DelRay upscale trim option for 210 models, then its own model

Chevy . . . Colorado (smaller pickup truck)

Toy___ . . . Avalon (CA and NJ)

Just some thoughts,
