  1. I remember vw beetles having the same problem. We would remove vacuum advance, condenser & points then soak the distributor in can of atf overnight. Next day you clean it up and reinstall.
  2. I enjoyed talking & seeing your 38 studebaker. Have a safe trip home.😎
  3. Have you enter the car in the show? We would like to see it. If not post where you will be😎.
  4. Did trans service have any affect? Small amount of metal may not be serious. Does engine rev up and car not respond? If car behaves normally after warmup perhaps you can wait on overhaul. Some trans shops are quick to condemn just to get work.
  5. We brought a scooter in 2019 & 2021, you can register it when you arrive. We parked next to giant center in handicapped parking. Show day we parked across the street as giant center lot was in use for judges. We would say bring extra battery or recharge when ever you can, like at lunch. Having a scooter made the event so much better for my wife as she cannot walk for long periods.
  6. Have you tried running without the air filter? Early filters had felt that can come loose and choke out engine under load.
  7. Putting money issues aside, the question is do you want to drive this summer? I would install manifolds and head . Drive over the summer and then recheck compression. If car was running good and not smoking badly, just enjoy the ride. Replacing rings can be done next winter if needed.
  8. Bought mine at Hershey. One says Hershey region other one says Hemings. Use them every year 🙂
  9. Did you replace the rubber hoses at tank and pump. They can collapse internally and still not leak. Usually under load.
  10. love your vanagon! Worked on many back in the day. We had 85 vanagon with water cooled engine. Used ours on many vacations with our kids. Tons of room for everyone!
  11. We like Cocoa Diner & we ate there in May. (We like the senior menu)
  12. During the week we handicapped parked by Giant Center in years past. We registered my wife’s scooter there also. Saturday we parked up at far end as per your map.
  13. Did you change cap & rotor also? Wish you were closer I would like to hear it run. Bet I am not the only one.
  14. I have been following your progress & have a suggestion. I have seen this same issue several times and it turned out to be distributor rotor. They short through the center to the shaft. You can not see a trace, so replacement is the only test. Have seen it on vw in the 90s and a 63 corvette in 1970. Both times drove techs crazy! I would change cap rotor & ignition wires. Again these cars always idled fine & only acted up on acceleration. Hope this helps its keeping us up at night trying to figure if out!
  15. I would perform voltage drop test from battery to starter. If you have good circuit how about carbon build up raising compression. If car was run on choke a lot carbon could be issue.
  16. Here in New Jersey we call them traffic circles, not roundabouts. I read that they were invented in NJ. We have no trouble with them.
  17. just a note on get smart, sunbeam tiger was later replaced by vw Carmen Ghia when vw became their sponsor.
  18. How about 70 corvette with 350 engine & 4sp. A/c & p/s. In blue. Nice top down cruiser. Other choice 39 plymouth convertible. Maybe both if available at original price!
  19. Suggestion for next year. Saturday handicapped parking is too far from show field. 1 1/2 miles. Also no place to charge scooters by show field, had to push my wife’s scooter back to giant center. Great show as always!
  20. I will check with my agent but getting down to the wire now. Is it suggested or required? We are always very careful around the cars but things happen & then you have to man up & pay up.
  21. We are bringing a scooter we rented and were told we had to register it. Nothing was said about insurance. We have a placard from the state for our car. Hopefully we are ok.
  22. Last year they were recharging scooters by giant center. My wife is renting one here in nj for $100 for the week. Comes apart & fits in back of my Jetta wagon. I just can’t buy as many parts, no room left!
  23. I remember reading Tom Macahils roadtest of first a/c cobra w260 v8. 140mph! I was in love. I also remember him rolling over testing a Renault! He impressed me that a car had to corner well &not just go fast. My other favorite was Gus Wilson’s model garage. Part detective part mechanic. I diagnosed my bosses truck at age 16 with help from Gus. Like to think what I learned then helped me through my 40+ years working in the car business
  24. You should try a voltage drop test. Attach digital volt meter, pos to engine bock, neg to battery post. Crank engine & watch reading. Should be less than tenth of volt. You can move leads around to plan point where drop ls. Same for pos side. Battery post (positive) to starter post. We used this method my vow shop for years. Old bugs would burn throttle &heater cables if engine ground was bad. We had trouble with sciroccos losing spark when cranking in cold weather also. Resitance between trans mount & trans case(ground cable @ mount) caused back feed to stop spark but starter still worked. Hope this helps.
