Someday I'll get there...

We have traditionally done Spring Carlisle, but work thwarted that this year and we ended up going to the Fall show. I tried to talk the other two guys into Hershey instead but they're more familiar and comfortable with the Carlisle shows, so that's where we went.

And none of us had enough vacation time left to do Pennsylvania runs two weekends in a row!

Olds,

Congratulations on your Senior award.

This year's meet was one of the best I have attended in the last 26 years that I have attended Fall Hershey. It appears that most of the temporary headaches such as field and car corral location in the past few years due to construction of the Giant Arena are history and things are getting back to being more stable.

Congratulations for a job well done to the Hershey Region members and anyone else that worked hard to put on the 2003 Eastern Division National Fall Meet, and thank you for your efforts.

Glenn, I know the real reason that you guys went to Carlisle...it was for the tattoo parlor on the show grounds! Or the beer drinking! You can't get a tattoo at Hershey but you will see a lot more vendors, great cars at the show and quite a collection of cars in the corral. Also. for those that like auctions there were two held during this year's event. The new AACA MUseum is available too...next year make it Hershey!

To all those that stopped me with kind words...THANKS! To the great Olds clubs members who joined AACA to support me...Thanks! It was a great week with a lot to thanks for, especially the weather.

Yup- we stopped and gawked at the tattoo trailer like we do every year, and we brought our own refreshments up from VA 'cause Pennsylvania has such screwy ABC laws. We are used to buying beer in any convenience or grocery store, not Pizza Hut, or having to find a warehouse distributor!

Kid at work moved down here from PA a couple months ago and he is stunned and amazed that he can buy his beer at Food Lion. His first day on the job, he asked where the beer distributor was, and we told him to go to a grocery store. He had this look, and I said Adam, you ain't in Kansas anymore.

Yes Bob. And he told me he was taking a boat ride over here next year after flying back and forth over the Atlantic trying to find a flight that would get him near the State of Pennsylvania. What was it, 26 hours flying and he still hasn't seen his luggage? W.

Glenn,

You might want to take note that the land of brotherly love enforces a $10 per bottle fine on alcoholic beverages brought in over the state line. (Dom Perignon or the Silver Bullet, it's still $10 an individual bottle or can!) And believe it or not there is actually a staff of officers whose job it is to hang around in MD and NJ liquor stores watching for people buying with PA plates and follow them back accross the state line. Some people contribute to society, others..... flylicker.gif

There's virtually no chance of being found and fined coming up from VA. But a word to the wise.....

Like I said- screwy ABC laws.

Besides Dave- they have to catch me first!

Been thinking about this a bit, and I'm scratching me head. If I can buy a fifth of fine Canadian liquor, and a case of Canadian beer, at the duty-free shops and bring it back into the US as long as I declare it for personal consumption at the customs station, why does the Commonwealth of PA want to fine me for bringing alcoholic beverages for me own personal consumption into their state?

Are they that desperate for tax revenue? Must be, and something tells me the package stores in MD and NJ are way cheaper. We have state-run package stores down here, and there is little price and tax difference on booze between NC and VA. Groceries and convenience stores can sell beer and unfortified wine; everything else must be bought at Aunt Bessie's Cafe (or as my daddy always called it, the bootlegger's). Go in a Pizza Hut here and ask to buy a carton of beer and they would laugh you out of the place and then call an ABC officer.

And Wayne, I have never owned a Buick, but if I ever do, it will have VA personalized plate "BURICK" . Two of Mama's uncles had 'em, and all they ever called them was "Dynaflow Burick" or "Burick artomobile".

Hey everyone, I'm a new vendor and had a wonderful time.

Per that beer buying deal it's just silly. I pack my cooler in MD and thats all I have to say about that legality... there are more important things to worry about the night before the swap meet... like where and when will I have a chance to sleep. My first day vending was rough, got only one hour of sleep due to packing all the stuff and transporting the Rambler and vintage Shasta Camper to Hershey.

I do recall the pain in the keister I had last spring at Carlise when I went to buy beer in Carlise.... took the wrong road and drove for 5 miles out of town. Then ended up at a pizza shop and brought a 12 pack to the counter, empolyee looks at me and says there is a rule saying I can only buy 6 beers per person...! You gotta be frick'n kidding I'm thinking (how does anyone ever go fishing up here?) Anyway my buddy is back at the show, and I'm here by myself, what a look I'll get when I return with only 6 beers..... ha ha ha. So then the employee behind the counter says to me "it's OK to take the beer to the car and return immediately and buy some more". Ok I"m thinking I must be in a Candid Camera gag of sorts. So I walk my 6 pack out to the Rambler (doors don't always lock) and there stands a teenager, peering at me, I think he's looking for someone to buy beer for him? I didn't like his look, was quite concerned he'll steal my 6 pack as I went in to buy my other 6 pack. (Tell me I'm not in a bad dream) I'm going sheer nuts over this and laughing my a@@ off too at how silly this was. So I move the Rambler closer to the front door, slip in and get the other half of the refreshments. Total time to buy a 12pack was close to a hour.... I'll be a monkeys uncle to ever patronize PA again for any beer sales... that's for frick'n shure. LOL.

As to Hershey, I just got my vendor spaces (I'm the guy with the stuffed groundhog sitting on the pile of old tires) and didn't have time to bring along any friends. My entire row of vendors were all new too.... they seemed just as unprepared as I being that the spaces magically became available and we just went for it and bought them. I think I fed half the row, and they all enjoyed my Maryland beer. Total time to buy a 12 pack in Maryland.... 4 minutes.

>>You do realize of course that alcoholic beverages are not allowed in the flea market?<<

I visit the beer store about 4 times a year... I'm very busy with my projects and goals and just can't find the time to sit around watching my life go by. Everyone I met at Hershey was really mature and I can't imagine how such a rule came about ? Moderation is the better rule.

What do you mean you can only get 6 beers at once? you can't get even a buzz off 6 beers there... There was a guy there on friday afternoon selling ice cold coors on one of the bridges, it went down like a bottle of water... It was my frist time to Hershey and wont be my last. On thing i did notice was that the RV parking did take up a lot of the show area depending on how the RV's and cars where parked on the grounds making much longer walks for handicapped persons, I even found that after 5 days of walking it's so nice to get back home and relax.

The rule is no alcohol anywhere on the Show grounds or in the flea market. I innocently asked a security person for directions as he passed our flea market spaces. He noticed the beer I was holding and reminded me of the rule but he was cool about it. Interestingly, it was my Canadian buddies who supplied the brew...always stirring up trouble those Canadians! I think they were trying to get me tossed out...I know they covet my 10 spaces.
