Fuel (gasoline) prices

Greetings all,

I looked back a few pages and saw nothing posted on this

subject, so I thought I would bring it up again.

Around here, back about December, 2001 (one year and two

months ago, more or less) the price for self-serve

regular (the cheap stuff) was anywhere from $.95.9 to $.99.9

per gallon. Now, we are up to about $1.55.9 per gallon

(I am speaking of name brand). I live in northwest Alabama.

What is happening in your area?

The gas price collusion problem here in Ohio and Indiana is just as bad as it ever was, however the current instability in wholesale prices (caused by the impending war and the strike in Venezuela) have disrupted the timing of the weekly increases. Now instead of going up 15-25 cents every Thursday it can happen almost any time. This past Tuesday gas went from $1.43-1.46/gal of regular unleaded to exactly $1.63 at every single station in town. Once again that happened inside of 2 hours all accross the city. angryfire.gif

Thank goodness the government (federal, state & local) here consists entirely of one political party who's main interest is the health of the business community! I'd hate to see the poor starving service station operators having to make their boat payments out of their legitmate earnings. rooleyes2.gif

Regular ranges from $1.47 to $1.54 this morning. Citgo is currently the highest price here and is always the first to raise. The other name brands are 5-7 cents cheaper per gallon. Sheetz and Hess are running 10 cents cheaper than the names. And for whatever unexplained reason, I have found that me Custom Cruiser picks up 2 mpg on Sheetz under same driving conditions?

Gas prices are crazy! Range goes from $1.43 to $1.73. Even burning Shell I can drive 5 miles and find a station 10 cents cheaper than the corner station. The prices change every 6 hrs. Sometimes the corner station is cheaper than the one 5 miles down the road! Its like a contest every time I gas up the car! I do find I get better mileage with Shell and sometimes Shell is cheaper than those bargin places.

Big oil is just making a killing profit wise. Taking advantage as usual of current "crisis". Same thing happened back in the 70's. Lots of big bucks being made by Bush's buddies right now.

$1.499 is the cheapest around here as of late last week. Some places as high as $1.599 for the cheap stuff. That's up $0.10 since a week ago. It was only $1.439 in downtown Atlanta last Friday. Looks like Savannah is trying to stick it to the I-95 tourists and snowbirds.

I've got a Socony visible register gas pump price insert from the late 20s or early 30s that has the price per gallon at 21.25 cents, which includes 5.5 cents tax! Using a 3% constant inflation rate for 73 years, the 21.25 cents price is equal to regular gas at $1.78, today's posting at the Amoco near my office. Of course, the gasoline 70+ years ago was about 50 to 60 octane.

I was lucky to find regular (with 10% ethanol) at $1.68/gallon on my way home yesterday evening. Most of the other stations had already raised prices to $1.79/gallon. I'm almost afraid to see what they're at today!

Just gassed up at $1.79 a gallon and was told that the truckload due in in 4 hours was going to jump the price by 9 cents a gallon...I was in San Francisco Tuesday and saw regular over $2.00 a gallon.

When one party can successfully portray the other as unpatriotic or immoral, democracy loses. Here, on at least a local scale, there is no democracy any more.

I have to say that I admire the patriotism and morals of this administration much more than I did the last.

Here in Sebring, Florida we're up as high as $1.829 per gallon, with the lowest prices at $1.709. Right at this time the idiots who run this county just added two cents more to the highest gasoline taxes anywhere. When I left Virginia yesterday morning the price was $1.439. It was even $1.519 at exit 1 in Georgia yesterday. There may be no income tax here, but between auto insurance (double that of VA), gasoline and sales tax (almost double that of VA). I've gone a long way toward paying the Virginia income tax. That leaves me with warm weather. When my wife turns 65 we will both qualify for a $12,000 each extra income tax exemption in Virginia. That could turn around our two residencies and make Florida the 2nd home. But I'm enjoying the high 70s today, and yesterday morning I had to slip and slide out the driveway and another thing, the electric bill last month in Virginia was $215 and we weren't even there....gotta keep my Buicks warm too you know

Kind of a timely article in this months SIA magazine on GM's EV1 1999 electric car. Pretty impressive performance of 0-60 in 8 seconds and 1,100 ft/lbs of torque. If you could live with a 70-90 mile range on a charge it would be a great car. On the down side you have to replace batteries at 30k and I'm sure that's expensive.

Unfortunately the 1000 cars they built were only available leased and GM plans on crushing them all at the end of lease. I guess the hybrids and hydrogen technology has taken over the electric car idea.

$1.739 here. It jumps about .20 then goes down about .12 over the next few days before another .20 jump. I have seen gas at one price when I drove by and decided to get some on the way back an hour later and the price would jump .15 or .20/ gal. I asked if they had a truck today and the answer was "no". Same gas as an hour ago, new price!

Gee, I wonder what that's like? They've been doing that here in western Ohio for years now.

The last collusion rise seems to have overshot the price. By yesterday you could find unleaded regular down 6 cents to $1.68. It'll go back up Tuesday afternoon.

Well, I guess President Bush let the gasoline companies down last week by not invading. Gas is down $.04 to $1.499.

Down another penny to $1.489. Amazing how it goes up by a dime overnight, but comes down by a penny per week.

Jumped to 1.82 then down to 1.72 for regular. My show car burns Premium-- its going to be an expensive summer!! Yes I drive to shows, no trailers for me.

The price drop must be pretty comprehensive. There hasn't been a collusion increase here since it went to $1.74. It's currently drifted down to about $1.55-$1.60 (you know it's going down here when there actually are price differences). We'll probably be due for another jump tomorrow.

This is unbelievable! It went down another penny to $1.479. That's $.02 in less than a week. Must be good ole American competition. Somebody decided to cut the price and make it up on volume, then everybody else follows suit.

I knew it was too good to be true. When I went past the 76 station this morning I thought we must have invaded Iraq last night. It was up $.09 to $1.569. Is this dramatic increase nationwide or is it just here? I heard on the news this morning that we have a local strike by the truckers that haul in and out of the ports. If this gas price hike is just local, that is probably the reason.

Well, you don't know how lucky you are. In San Francisco the price for regular unleaded is now over $2.00 a gallon from most places, and the cheapest ones are $1.919! It has risen by 40 cents in the past three months.

Folks -

This is the price we pay for being the world's leading consumer of petroleum products. Still think gasoline, even at $2.00/gallon, is a bargain compared to western europe, etc. Of course, I hate it when the totalizer shows numbers that start with a 2+ at each fill up.

They have to pay for that free health care somehow. I don't feel guilty for having lower gasoline taxes than the Europeans.
