RivNut
This is an illustration of a 66 “nailhead” but you can use it to identify your engine. The PRODUCTION CODE NUMBER tells you the year and cubic inches/horsepower. The stampings may face either direction. J = 1963, K = 1964, L= 1965, and M = 1966. T = 401, W = 425, X = 425 w/ dual four barrel carburetors in 1964 & 1965; MZ for the 2x4 engine in 1966. These numbers are good for the Riviera. There are other codes for two barrel, low compression, and other applications. The ENGINE SERIAL NUMBER should match the car’s VIN. 1963 was the last year that Buick used the Dynaflow transmission. Easy to identify by the shift pattern - PNDLR. ( the ‘400’ is the engine used in the Skylark GS series. It’s actually a 401 but on paper it’s called a 400 to meet a mandate from GM that intermediate sized platforms have an engine no larger than 400 cubic inches. ) Edited June 29, 2022 by RivNut (see edit history)

I would love to believe everyone when they say numbers match. I asked about transmission, they told me they were fairly certain that had been replaced. As far as the engine, they believe it is original but told me in 63 it was a little more difficult to verify. That didn’t sound correct to me, but wanted to see if someone could point me in the right direction. The data plate on the door opening and the engine number should match. Both numbers are easy to find. Lots of good ‘63 information on the Riviera Owners Association web site which is accessible even if not an ROA member. Was a theft recovery from California so the body is rust free other than surface rust from paint stripper. Seriously, this body is nice. Clean Texas title in my name. Never fired stock rebuild original 401. $4500 in receipts for parts and machine work. Also have a spare long block and transmission with the switch pitch torque converter. Has been sitting in my garage for almost 10 years and I lost interest in it a while ago. Headlights missing some of the parts to make them work. Needs to be gone through to be road worthy and missing random parts. I have the front bumpers but no exhaust. This is a project. Brakes do not work but has the original aluminum drums still. This is a project not a restored car ready for a cross country trip. Make offer. Will sale as a roller also. Text is best.

I baught it 10 years ago from the original family. I had the car fully inspected from a guy out of Florida before I baught it. I have the paper work I can send over. The car has just been serviced. I have all my contact information and questions from the original family. Includes owners manual and window sticker. They made 3175 gs models in 1971. I believe this is probably one of the nicer all original cars left. I believe this car is all original and a untouched survivor. With possibly a few spot paint. Great collector car.
