Be sure you have the correct gasket before installation. Good luck with the valve operating rod...and I hope you like the taste of tranny fluid.

Willie

Jim from Jim's Dynaflow service is sending me all of the gaskets and seals that I should need. I made popsicles the last time. Still have some left over, if it gets too hot!

Drained the transmission yesterday and pulled the pan. Took the valve assembly off and took apart. Managed to take it apart further this time. Looks as if someone else has been in here before. Note that one of the pictures has scratches all over the steel plate. Seems that my car was built late 56 and one of the piston seals is larger, (low servo) and is more like a 57. I have the wrong seal and Jim from Jim's Dynaflow is sending me the correct one.

So, waiting for the piston cup and then I'll try to get it put back together.

I received the new piston cup in the mail today, but since it was my birthday, I celebrated by taking the afternoon after work with my lovely missus and went to the casino.

Had a really great time.

Tomorrow I will try to finish up the valve body and get the transmission assembled again. But, I'm not going to rush myself. If it takes another day to do it right, then so be it.

Well, with the help of Jim, I have run the all of the tests possible. After rebuilding the valve body assembly the tranny pressure tested great in all gears. I even adjusted the parking lock pawl to engage correctly. To no avail though as the reverse band is kaput.

So, gotta figure out a way to pull the transmission out and get it sent off to Jim. I could probably tackle the rebuild, but my paint schedule on the 47' convertible is more important. Hopefully I can get it out and back in before Hershey. I was planning to drive it there. Still time, maybe. Matt

  • 2 weeks later...

Matt

You may not have to completely remove the rear end. On 55's: remove panhard bar, shock links (yours is different here), disconnect brake line, brake cables and with it hanging from the springs, pull back as far as it will go. The transmission only has to go back less than 2" before you lower it.

Rebuilt transmission was shipped from Jims Dynaflow Service today. I should have it Monday afternoon. I will have to load it on the truck and bring it home from work. I will try to get the old one pulled out and flush out the transmission cooling lines in the radiator this weekend. Back to wet sanding on the 47'.......

Got my transmission today and it is now in the garage! Maybe tomorrow I can pull the old one out and try putting the new one in. I still need to flush out the radiator lines. Also ordered a new set of shocks for the car. They should be here by Thursday, so i should be able to get them put in when installing the rear back in.

Old tranny out........rebuilt tranny in! Found something interesting and will post a picture when I get inside and cleaned up. Now just have to make two new cooling lines because they wouldn't turn and broke them off. Still have to bolt up the torque tube, etc. but the hard part is done. 3 hours. The tranny jack I bought was amazing.

I found this wedged in the a fitting in the cooling line to the radiator from the transmission. It was wedged in a coupling. Guess there wasn't much cooling going on in there! The transmission had been out of the car before. This must have been put in the line to keep a drip from dripping on the floor and wasn't taken out when they put the tranny back in.

Got my new set of shock absorbers today! Maybe tomorrow I'll have a chance to work on bolting the torque tube and getting the rear back in it's proper spot. Note to all: When attaching the torque tube back to the transmission, leave the bolts loose until the rear wheels are back on the ground so the tube finds it's true center. Will try to see if I can find some line material to re-make the lines that I broke yesterday trying to get them off of the transmission. Don't know if I'll get as far as shocks, but as long as I keep knocking things off of the list, I should get done this weekend and be able to drive a little bit.;)

Everything is done! I still have to bleed the brakes again and adjust them. Transmission has oil in it. Ran out of light and didn't have any help to bleed the brakes. I replaced one of the shock mounts on the rear. Someone replaced it with a bolt at one time or another, so it deserved the correct mount. Hopefully I can finish up everthing else before the weekend. Was able to set the timing rarly this afternoon. It was off! Also had some good Buick Bretheren company here at the house this afternoon! John DeFiore and Ed Allmond stopped on their way home from Carlisle. We grillled some hamburgers and hot dogs and looked over the Buicks. Was a great time for me and I would imagine a nice stop at around their halfway point returning home. Thanks guys! And thanks for bringing my parts!

Really enjoyed the time at your place Matt. And loved seeing your cars. The interior is gonna be awesome in a Buickful car. Great eats, thanks to you, your son and your wife for your hospitality. That Carlilse really wore me out. Slept more than 10 hours last nite... But the wagon proved to be a real trooper.

John,

The pleasure was ours. I had a great time! The conversation was great and I'm glad you two took the time to stop and rest awhile.

Today, I changed out the front shocks and the sway bar bushings and links. Greased all of the fittings under the front end. She should handle a whole lot better now. Just have to change out the tires now and i need a rebuilt fuel pump. The original is weak.

Found some window seals at Hershey and changed two of them out. Will have to order mounting clips as the others are worn beyond use. In the last two days, i've drove her a little over 100 miles. I had the whole family out tonight to my sons soccer game and then to Krispy Kreme for donuts. My wife "loved" the ride! Still awhile this year to drive some more, even though the car shows are done for the year.
