Lycoming Engine 8 Cyl. Parts ?

Members,

Do any of you know where one can get any information or parts for a late 1920's 8 cylinder Lycoming based car engine? i recently "found" a large 1929 Kissel Model 8-126 engine in a defunct saw mill on the West Coast and bought it. there are only a couple of these engines that exist, as they were the very high end cars when Kissel was going out of business. Kissel literature of that period show that Kissel bought Lycoming cores for this model engine, and then custom fit Kissel heads, cranks, pistons, etc. I am told that this model lycoming block is the longest 8 cylinder engine that exists. It has a bore of 3.25 inches, and a stroke of 4.5 inches. It displaces 298.6 CI. which make it the same as a Lycoming Cord L-head block of that period, i think, but i might be wrong. Any information to help me to restore it will be appreciated. What other cars used this big block ??

Thanks, Ron Hausmann P.E.

Ron: My old parts catalogs are all over the map on which 31/4 Lyc came in the 8-126...

I do have a smattering of Lyc piston ass'bly, valve and bearing info; if you've determined whether you have a whole Lyc, and, if so, which one, I can see if my catalogs list any other Lyc's sharing parts...

Of five catalogs I eyeballed, only one listed the 8-126 engines as "own", which would imply Kissel added their own innards; the other four listed various Lyc 8's for parts reference as if Kissel bought the whole engine...

It's also possible Kissel built their parts to the same specs as the Lyc parts, just using better material or machining, so stock Lyc parts could be used if Kissel's not available???

Hello, I really apologize for reviving this old thread but I am having trouble finding any information at all about this engine.  I have come into possession of an old lycoming inline 8 cylinder flat head engine.  The badge on the side of the block says it was out of an auburn.  and someone has written in chalk on the side of the head 1929 auburn.  There are numbers raised numbers on the head that say "110" and "A11".  I am very familiar with engines and work on modern engines however I have never worked on something this old as I am 24 years old.  it seems to be a pretty intact block, it has the intake and exhaust manifolds, however no carb, I think the distributor is in a separate box, it does turn over by hand if I turn what I believe to be the crank pulley.  Any help would be very appreciated as I am not really sure what to do with this engine.  My name is Bobby and I live in St.louis Missouri.  I tried to attach a picture

Hi, while not worth a fortune, it has some value. Send me a PM through this site, and I will be happy to help you out with it. I can list it for sale for you in the Auburn club website. To get the most value out of it, you need to be willing to make a good crate and place it on a pallet for shipping. I have no interest in it for myself. I can give you some insight into selling it in private. Best, Ed

Bobby,

Your Lycoming engine block should be interchangeable with the cars listed earlier in this thread. Some high end auburns, cords, etc.           Although my Kissel 8-126 engine used this same Lycoming block, a Kissel Lycoming would have Kissel made internals, head, pan, and rods and not standard Lycoming items. Kissel only bought the blocks from Lycoming. Kissel was pretty fussy about their balance issues on these big engines and preferred to make and use their finely made components in their Lycoming blocks.

If its the same as my engine, the carburetor should be a Schebler S-2 Duplex.

Also, locomobiles had a Lycoming motors. the model 8-80 had a Lycoming motor that cylinder bore was 3 1/4" and stroke of 4 1/2". it used a schebler  model "s" carburetor. 1 1/2" bore. They also used a Stromberg o-3 carburetor on special production models.

I had a question related to a Lycoming 1929 Kissel 8-95 Engine.  Does anyone have any recommendations on how to go about finding or having made Con-rods and Pistons for the block.  It appears to be a bit unique as the rods are aluminum ad 9.52" long, crank bore 2.125" and piston pin 0.754".  The pistons are 2.875".  Is there any interchange information out there?  Also any recommendations on manufacturers to have them machined?  Or any recommendations on potential suppliers of the internals?

I am not sure you would need connecting rods - I  do not recall hearing tale of rod issues with earlier Lycoming engines (excepting Duesenberg and that is another story).

For Duesenberg Rods people are using Carillo www.cp-carrillo.com  I believe.

For most Auburns I am aware of, we are using Aries Pistons https://ariaspistons.com/, though plenty of other brands in use.

Gerczak - I have a 1926-ish Kissel 8-75 chassis with engine. I think the earlier Kissel 8-75 is the same as your 8-95 block. It has all engine internals. I would sell the engine and internals if that would help you.

thanks, Ron Hausmann P.E.
