  6. My father had one on his '52 Plymouth that he bought new. It isn't listed on his bill of sale from the dealer so I'd say it's an aftermarket item.
  7. Two chrome window crank blockoff covers for your vintage Ford. They are about 1-3/4" in diameter. The number stamped inside them is 1A-18333 and I believe these are for 1951-1956 cars that had power windows. It is also possible they were used on Police cars so prisoners couldn't roll down the windows. Retaining clips not included. $35.00 for the pair, postpaid in the lower 48 States. PayPal is OK.
  8. When I moved to New Jersey one of my Plymouths had a NY transferable registration signed over to me, with the motor number instead of a VIN. New Jersey refused to issue a title with the VIN and told me to go back to New York to straighten it out. That's when I called NYDMV and the woman I spoke to at the Title Bureau told me they could issue a title to a pre-73 vehicle if I wanted it. Instead, I got a NY transferable registration with the VIN (in my name and with my NJ address) that I presented to NJ. They then issued a NJ title to me. This was a number of years ago and things may have changed since then. I wanted to share my experience in case one of the other posters might benefit by it.
  9. When I lived in New York I converted several early-'50's Plymouths from 'engine number' to 'VIN' (really vehicle number) registrations. It was a simple process and the DMV people were very helpful. One woman told me something very interesting: Titles are mandatory for '73 and newer in NY, but can be issued to earlier-year vehicles. I don't know if this is still the case, but might be worth looking into. I'd call the main NYDMV Title Bureau in Albany for their advice.
  10. 1961 Dodge passenger car parts manual. Covers Lancer, Dart, and full-size Dodge. In loose leaf binder. Good used condition with some wear. Looks conplete but haven't gone through page-by-page. $65.00 includes Media Mail shipping in the lower 48 States. PayPal is OK.

  12. In one episode of Wheeler Dealers they found an auto glass company that visually matched the contours of the original glass to that of a modern, easily-obtained replacement windshield. They then cut the new windshield down to size and installed it.
  13. I believe that Chrysler used a similar device on their police cars in the 1970's. Probably more in the interest of reducing some drag on the engine during pursuit.
  14. In the 1970's I saw a business card from an 'instrument repair service' that said in big letters 'WE FIX CLOCKS'. They were not referring to timepieces.....
  15. We should keep in mind that, as car people, we're a lot more 'tuned-in' to scams than the bulk of the population. A few months ago a friend of mine asked my advice about a Craigslist ad for an RV van he was considering. He sent me the response he got...inherited the vehicle from a relative that died, in the Army in Alaska so can't communicate, eBay Motors will ship it for free (!!!), photos looked like they were lifted from a dealer ad, yada, yada. I told him to run the other way and luckily he did.
  16. My father was into the 'keep 'em going' aspect of cars and eventually bought his first new car, a black '52 Plymouth Cambridge. The story I heard is that my mother flat-out refused to ride in his prior car, a '38 Pontiac, so that prodded him into buying the Plymouth. When I was born I came home from the hospital in the Cambridge. A lot of good childhood memories involved that car, and I developed a lifelong interest in them. I've had several '51-'52 Plymouths through the years, including one Cambridge that's a carbon copy of my father's car, down to the color. It's only 1200 VINs apart from the one my father had. It sits in my garage gathering dust, but it feels good just to look at it and sit behind the wheel.
  17. IIRC, there were instructions for making a hood-spring stretcher in the '49-'54 Pontiac shop manual. Makes it easier and safer to remove and install the springs.
  18. Used copy of the 1957-58 Dodge Truck Parts List covering K-series, L-series, 4-wheel drive, and tandem rear axle models. The manual is about 2" thick and printed on loose-leaf pages tied together with thin cardboard serving as front and back covers. Includes part numbers and illustrations. The pages are in good condition and the manual looks complete although I didn't go through every page. $65.00 postpaid by Media Mail in the lower 48 States. PayPal is OK.

  20. I'm not a big fan of the short, gloomy days at this time of year and the yellowish glow of incandescent bulbs doesn't help. My son got me a Circadian Rhythm lamp. It's essentially a bright white LED desk lamp. I've been using it at my workspace (dining room table) and the brightness really perks things up.
  21. Round one of my road test took place in a friend's '64 Pontiac Tempest 2-door sedan, six cylinder, manual steering and brakes. Several things went wrong that day, including my friend forgetting to bring his driver's license and registation to the road test. In his rush to get back to the testing site, he backed into a pole and bent the bumper on the Pontiac. On to round two..... This time I had my father's '65 Dodge Coronet. The inspector was a New York State Trooper, so I began mentally preparing for Round 3. Surprisingly, he was very laid-back about the whole thing. He lit a cigarette, flicked ashes out the vent window, and had me make a 3-point turn on the narrowest street in town. "I know it'll take more than 3 moves...take as many as you need". Things were looking up. I completed the rest of the test, and when the trooper got out of the car, he told me to wait for my license to come in the mail before I drove again (also against the rules...the inspector wasn't supposed to tell you if you passed or failed). Mission accomplished!
  22. I worked with the guy who played the truck driver whose rig was stolen from the diner parking lot. His day job was selling Fords.
  23. Here's an official Ford training handbook covering the diagnosis, testing, adjustment, and repair of the Ford C-3 automatic transmission. It was used on a wide range of smaller-engine car models including: 1974–1980 Ford Pinto 1974–1977 Mercury Capri 1978–1983 Ford Fairmont 1970–1986 Ford Mustang 1981–1982 Ford Granada 1974–1986 Smaller rear wheel drive Lincolns 1974–1980 Mercury Bobcat 1978–1983 Mercury Zephyr 1979–1986 Mercury Capri 1983–1986 Mercury Marquis/Ford LTD (when equipped with the 2.3 I4) 1985–1989 Merkur XR4Ti 1983-1989 Thunderbird Handy 4" x 7" format makes it easy to carry wherever you go. The photos are of the front and back covers. Info like this is getting harder to find! In very nice condition except has a little staining on the bottom of the cover. $14.00 postpaid in the lower 48 States.
