  1. The car uses the small Pierce distributor. Because it has timing gears it turns in a different direction and it has a different firing order from the other motors. Trying to run for carburetors on it is going to be difficult because whatever was on there I’m sure never ran right. It was massively over carbureted. That said a factory intake and exhaust manifold would be fairly expensive, along with the correct carburetor. Pistons, valves, and a few other parts are available. It’s a fairly simple engine with an expensive engine to rebuild. The nine mean bearing crank in the eight connecting rods in total will probably run $6000 for bearings. That doesn’t include the cam bearings, which are probably another two grand. Pistons with rings and wrist pins figure $350 a hole. I’m sure I have a distributor for it.
  2. I think the Hupp in green looks ok either way with the tire option………but the spot lights and trunk rack need to find the trash can. The Hupp guys seem to be very loyal to their brand. They drive their stuff more than many other smaller clubs, and seem to have above average attendance than one would expect. Most of them that I know are extremely elderly now…….and it doesn’t seem any younger people are stepping in or filling in the ranks. Interestingly……..I have never driven or worked on any Hupp………..and now I am going to make an effort to take a few for a spin.
  3. Works great…….been there, done that. Kills everything that walks, crawls, or flies.
  4. In what can only be called sad, many of the signs on the cars at the museum were factually incorrect…….and off by a mile. I usually would catch one or two small errors over the years……..now it’s obvious that there is no one there with the background necessary to have basic knowledge of automobiles. They removed the library also. Overall the building and displays are better than they have been for ten years. I me the new collection manager. Nice guy, but his background is in music boxes and mechanical instruments. His tour was well done with a routine that was much more accurate than I expected……..with a few errors. It was obviously scripted by someone with great automotive knowledge. Everyone should visit this place every time they get to LA. They are still adding cars.
  5. And then there was this early six……..1912.
  6. Only from outside the rope………..I got there during regular hours so I couldn’t get access………
  7. And let the games begin for Pebble…..2022.
  8. Put 10 pounds of mothballs inside a shop vacuum cleaner with the filter removed. Place it in the car and turn it on. Run it for a few hours in the sun. Pull the cushions forward.
  9. While I can’t recall the story, it was published somewhere that the build was repurposed quickly after production stopped. I can’t remember the details, but it was probably a CCCA publication.
  10. Thanks guys, but using young in a sentence with my name is far from accurate. I’m old………
  11. Use a pizza disk………I have actually seen it done. Turned out fairly well.
  12. Ok……sorry for the delay. It’s been crazy busy here and I’m leaving for Pebble tomorrow. Phil has had time to dig deep into the Buick. To be honest……it was kicking his(our) ass for a while. Took a few days sleeping on it to figure things out and get ahead of it. Basically the engine was gummed up. The oil turned to glue. We were having a hard time turning the engine and couldn’t understand why it was actually binding. We came up with a game plan…….and everything turned out well. We removed the oil filter set up, and pushed three quarts of ATF through the upper oil gallery that goes to the cam and overhead valves. We then pushed three more quarts through the lower end oil gallery. That did the trick. It freed up the engine considerably. We had already oiled the rings, but only slightly. Finally we flooded them…….and presto. Spins fine now. We were very concerned early on. Now we will do the evapo rust block flush at temperature………probably three days or more. The added heat should break down and soften the oil that turned to glue. Had to chisel of the coolant hose between the oil cooler and water pump…..literally chisel it off…….I think it was the factory hose. Oil cooler has your typical rust flakes………and over all everything is going much better. We plan on doing a compression test in a few days. Also, the clutch p, transmission, and torque tube and rear wind will get installed after we clean everything up. The trans will be flushed several times before it’s reinstalled. The only things missing were the fuel tank….it was lost when the last owner passed away after he left it somewhere to get cleaned. I have sourced a good mascot with matching patina, a usable horn trumpet, and a replacement tail light. The ashtray with Sue’s moms butts will stay where they are……..they have been there since before I was born…….here are a few photos. If Phil send more photos to me while I’m on the road, I will keep posting the progress.
  13. Nope….never in a museum. It’s been in private hands with only three owners in fifty years. It was BOS back in the late 70’s. We regularly drive it all over………I’m guessing it has 50k or more since it was restored. We have driven it in a dozen states and three different countries. It cruises all day long at 80 without issues. It has a tall rear gear set installed. Second gear is actually useful for driving.
  14. Reading the auction description…….one can only conclude caveat emptor. The price is pretty optimistic for something that doesn’t come with the blue ribbon guarantee.
  15. FREE ROOM AT PEBBLE.........
  16. PS-a cheap dry chemical extinguisher is the BEST way to ruin your car and cost thousands of dollars in damage. Your probably better off letting insurance buy it back toasty or as a cinder. It’s almost incomprehensible What a dry extinguisher will do to a decent car
  17. PS - every car in our collection has an element fire extinguisher in it. The V-16 Cadillacs have two of them. There is one in my truck, and two in my trailer. I have tested them myself. Every car that I value has one in it.
  18. The exact reason in element fire extinguisher is not UL listed is because it does not use a pressure container. By definition any UL approved fire extinguisher requires it to use pressure. Since NASA has been using the same type of technology in an element unit since the 60s I would say is adequate.
  19. Congratulations! Nothing better than seeing friends get the car they want. 👍👍👍
  20. Yes….. off the field. AJ drove it on. AJ- yes paid. I let you buy me a 200 dollar dinner……..so you are technically paid. It just happens to be negative pay! And then there was the time I stoped those idiots from messing up your car. Priceless! I should probably Start charging you for allowing you to hang around with me. We should start it this year. Obviously it’s a cash only situation.
  21. I am not looking forward to dealing with an identical issue on a similar car when I get home from Pebble......please keep posting about these units....its been 35 years since I had my hands on one.
