Are you 100% certain it's not from the casting? Quite a few cars from that era didn't have removable heads yet but others more familar with the make might be able to say if that's the case

We're in our thirties and both me and my wife can drive manuals no problems - there is still a reasonable amount of young folk here that can drive manuals because it's a license restriction if you do your test on an auto (which is a pain when a lot of commercial vehicles are manuals)

The "Victoria Coupe" body style of 1914-1934
hidden_hunter replied to alsancle's topic in General Discussion
The basic design lasted for nearly ten years with the roof line being then part that changed the most. You can see the arrangement from the type 57’s of the mid teens through to the v63’s of the mid twenties -
some companies are getting very rich off it - PCR tests pre Covid $35 here, charge to the tax payer to test for Covid $85 and for travel $200-$300

Cadillac offered both a 5 passenger coupe and 4 passenger Victoria that were just about identical - the 5 passenger cost about $100 more and has a full length seat Pictures don’t really do it justice for size, but the cads aren’t far off the size of something like a BMW X5 -
I’ve posted about it before but it’s along the same tack as people bemoaning younger people not interested in the hobby while at the same time expecting to make a 4000% profit on a part that probably fits less than 50 vehicles remaining

The papers here had a hill that was commonly referred to as a measure of performance- it was short and steep (Punt road)

Strange squeaking noise coming from mid section of engine

Have you got an automotive stethoscope? -
Isn’t that really its main claim to fame? A low cost v8? It’s not something I’ve done a tonne of research into but things like the Buicks of the time had similar horsepower didn’t they? How much was marketing vs actual performance?

Aka someone managed to convince the dmv their hack job was official?
-
Definitely the right call looking at that

Another vote for taking them off, having had a motor that destroyed its cam gear it’s a very expensive and pain for what isn’t a massive job in the big scheme of things

1926 Buick standard six---will not fire.

Would probably be good to also know how he is checking he has spark, I would assume holding one of the leads close to the end of the spark plug? -

He also talked about putting fuel in the cylinders directly which would have bypassed this entirely? -
It's interesting how plain the cadillac ones were compared to their competition, I even have a copy of their "prestige" brochure from the early 20's and nothing fancy at all - the paper is probably the most luxury thing about it! All of the images are signed Mizen for Fred Mizen who also apparently drew for Marmon as well (not sure this page would have made made people want to part with over $5000 when new....) The 1912's were even more plain jane - most of the ads I've collected are wall to wall text and just plain pictures of the car rather than the 'lifestyle' you see by the 20's

would have thought it would have at least tried to start if that was the case Do you know the history of the motor? At its heart it’s pretty basic, and while finicky to get “just so” it will run pretty readily even with things way off. I would suggest going back to basics and check compression, timing, firing order etc. I’ve made plenty of mistakes where I have seen components work in isolation but when part of the system they don’t work right so it also pays to trace things from the beginning of a system are you running it with or without the spark plug cover on? The wrong plugs can also cause the cover to short them out if they’re too long. -
Looks like USPS have decided Australia is similar to Afghanistan and suspended most services

I did it while watching TV but yes it's very good exercise

I had one that I had to do it to, it took a long long time to get it right again

It looks like your fuel line isn't connected to the carburetter, which is probably a good thing as it's something that needs to be cleaned out
-
The thing missing from your dashboard is the speedo by the way Probably one of the first things to work out is what you want to do with the car, do you want to fully restore it? clean it up? make it a driver? There are some folks on here that like patina and others who go for a full restoration. It's hard to tell from the pictures but it looks like your car has been well looked after and is just dusty I would suggest also making a list of recomissioning tasks (the guys on here will be able to help you)

Finding old fashioned two lane roads for long distance travel
hidden_hunter replied to ply33's topic in General Discussion
I dont' really have a need but could accomodate two fairly easily on the running boards The car already has a 20 gallon tank which is more than enough for my needs -

hidden_hunter replied to ply33's topic in General Discussion
It was reasonably common for roads here to just be upgraded over time rather than brand new being laid, so a lot of the original roads are gone and the ones that still exist generally will be a short road to a town For gas storage, I’ve got a couple of original pattern jerry cans -
Take lots and lots and lots of every photo and every detail so you have a point in reference for everything Your car looks very well preserved
