  1. Metallurgy was also a limiting factor, there are urban legends that the quality of the aluminium used in some of the early race cars being the quality of a modern lawn chair
  2. In the early days I’m assuming the biggest jumps were the war and aviation engines that trickled down to automotive
  3. Christmas done, now for the Aussies to win the ashes at the Boxing Day test
  4. Officially Christmas here, so merry Christmas y’all
  5. Yeah would be in the 10-15 mph range when I shift
  6. Mine is early enough to still have straight cut but it’s more the intermediate gear is noisier than low and high
  7. The laws around it are pretty murky, the car needs to meet the safety standards of the day but then children are supposed to be in car seats Either way, it's going to be more than a few years before my sons ready to go in my car but we'll probably find a carpark or something to give him a ride safely
  8. I drive a 2020 vw golf r wagon as my daily driver and it’s fantastic Neither of us are tall so it’s great for loading and changing our sons nappies when we’re on a trip
  9. News to me 🤪 Though not predicting a hot one this year 75f only Perth has anything remotely warm at just over 90
  10. Thanks for the explanation, makes sense. Doesn’t sound broken per se just noisy only grinding noise is my bad shifting 🤣
  11. Our place was built in 38 and they forgot that cars have doors on both sides… The carport is hard up against the fence so passengers can’t get out, a royal pain with a child seat
  12. Hey guys, Took the type 61 out for a drive yesterday and noticed that the intermediate gear is much much noisier than low or high gears I’m assuming it will be just down to wear on the gear itself rather than any other part that needs fixing?
  13. Yeah because that's totally not going to be ripe for corner cutting... Facadism is rife in Melbourne, where developers will claim the heritage of the building in their sales brochures then proceed to knock everything off save for the front wall to build yet another concrete/glass monstrosity
  14. that one isn’t universal, more to do with premium cars
  15. That's one of my pet hate, people that seem to think their mid size sedan is a semi
  16. My great grandfather was in the battle of the Somme and wounded by a German machine gun - took him over a year after the war ended to be fit enough to travel back to Australia. His unit was withdrawn owing to losses within days of being wounded Other side was in the closing days of the Gallipoli campaign before blowing out his ankle falling in a shell crater The Australian archives have digitised all of the service records, correspondences and log books so you can read the after action reports. Some of the days nothing notable happened other than a number of people KIA and WIA. Fascinating reading about the day to day of what they had to endure
  17. Some of the local bodies used pig leather instead of cow, not sure if that’s just a local thing though
  18. Yes they were but they would have been very very expensive, taxes favoured cars out of the empire - I imported my car from the US because it was considerably cheaper than a decent local car Buicks were by far much more popular and the local bodies were closer to Cadillac in terms of “luxury” e.g they had furniture grade wooden dashboards
  19. What I find interesting is what sort of person would have bought the car as well - the English used to describe my 1922 Cadillac and 2020 golf r in ads is very different but is trying to appeal to a similar segment
  20. My wife’s grandfather served in the Indian army in the Burma campaign and was captured by the Japanese. Essentially kicked out of India at independence, had the choice of Australia or Canada and accepted a commission in the RAAF. Eventually rose to air commodore (equivalent would be something like a brigadier general) before retiring just before Vietnam - he helped establish a structured dog training program for the military and police My side of the family was the wrong age for world war 2 asides from the home front. I don’t know if the US had the same thing, but our archives you can get anyone’s service records from that time. They’ve finished world war 1 and are nearly done on world war 2, it’s normally free but I paid to expedite the scanning of a family members while he was still alive - he’d never seen most of it
  21. Somehow I doubt when someone is restoring my 2020 golf r in 100 years time they’ll be talking about how good 2020 and 2021 was…
  22. Very small window where it would have been a great time to be alive when the car was new. Between world war 1, the depression and then world war 2 it probably wasn’t great for a lot of people.
  23. Funnily enough trunk isn’t used here, we use the much more sensible boot… and our engines are under the bonnet
