  1. I know this is an old post but. Tom how did you make out on your project? Reason for my asking is I am replacing the steel rims and spokes on our 08 Buick model F , older splash some paint on it restoration.I do not want the new wheels to look better then the rest of the car. I have googled how to patina paint work but it all seems to be about DIY home crafts/ projects. A lot of u tube videos have worn thru paint and rust, not what I am after, just need old looking paint and finish. Any help out there thanks
  2. Quebec is cracking down on people who register their cars in Ontario but actually they principally live in Quebec. The problem is very basic. The plate revenue goes to Ontario rather than Quebec who is providing the services.
  3. As a wife , and the only wife, of 42 years whose anniversary always falls somewhere in the Hershey week, I quite enjoy Hershey.
  4. This is one of the unusual things that I have n my stash of early automobilia
  5. Jeff some of those 1-2 cylinder tours are not for us with Cadillac,s. Whoever thinks that a steep hill with a stop sign at the bottom is not realizing what and can happen. I overheard a guy saying to his wife as they were packing up after the first day - why do people set out to destroy my car - let’s go home. But that’s for another thread.
  6. Jeff,I do not think Gary is in the Pebble Beach crowd. He has early cars that he tours and I have never known him to break down, always finishes. Just saying cheers pete
  7. In the 70’s Toyotas were brought in at least to Britain on open freighter decks. The dealerships had a heck of a time with salt damage from spray.
  8. So just bought beads off Amazon, arrived same day, planned a clear morning to put them in and they took roughly 5 mins per tire to insert. Thought back to the fights I had had with the other four cars. No idea what the difference was!
  9. Maybe the OP does random two lane highway drives 95% of the time. For some specific reason he would just this once like to follow The Lincoln Highway and maybe find a couple of maybe historical stops.
  10. Put it in your modern car,Don’t play Russian roulette
  11. Don’t forget to repack the rear wheel bearings. Flat rate time was 6.5 hrs and it was a @#$& of a job. I was the apprentice at Eastown Chev so you know who got to work on the vettes.
  12. Well I have a 06 Cadillac that can sit for months and start on the first pull, bought a 08 Buick model F 2 cylinder in December 2022 only got it going once in December, very awkward to crank as the crank handle is between the frame and running board. But I had ankle surgery in January so have not tried since to start it.Hopefully in another month I will be able to get at it.I think it is more of a rhythm and getting comfortable with your stance etc. to then be able to give a good pull up. I do not windmill any of my cars. I will say that the 2 cylinder has more drag/comp then the 1 cylinder but the 1 cylinder has a longer crank handle and no running board to contend with.
  13. Put the valve stem at about 8 o’clock position, put a few balance beads in container and having the squeeze bottle sort of laying on its side, squeeze the bottle lightly, sort of light puffs ,the beads will go back and forth in the tube and finally go into the valve stem. If the beads jam in the stem put the stem to 12 o’clock position and suck them down with the bottle. Took me about 45 minutes a wheel after I got going. It’s worth the work.
  14. Going back up this thread-A couple of employees helping just moving a car in will result in a few combined work hours- who paid? The guy who,s car they were supposed to be working on,ever walk around around a restoration shop, nobody breaks a sweat that’s why flat rate was invented, starting with the model T. I know you can not flat rate a restoration, but how does the customer know he is getting bang for his buck.
  15. Help me out here, what exactly would a contract have in it to get a car restored?
  16. My set up. When I started my apprenticeship a couple of the old mechanics said think about how you want your tools laid out and never change because if you change the layout it takes a long time to relearn where everything is.
  17. Melanie, what Matt is getting is what he most needs. a supportive wife and partner who understands exactly what he is going through. Restorations are not done in isolation, they are done with the family finances and energy. As such, helping him step back, not putting him under a deadline and getting done what can be done that will show some steps forward is the best way. Been there, done that! Erica
  18. That’s the asking price for Cadillacs and 2 cylinder Buicks of the same year Not that way out
  19. Prince Edward county and Prince Edward Island are nowhere near each other. I think 60FlatTop means the county
  20. Just saved 3 years of membership to AACA due to the info in this post. Thank you so much. Had not driven our GMC 2500 for a few months during winter and back in Feb went to start and no go. Battery dead as a door nail, swapped out battery with a spare I had and then attempted to charge it using a smart charger, no go. But today used the old style charger and voila! it is coming back to life. This is a glass Matt battery and cost a pretty penny..thanks again
  21. When I started my apprenticeship in 1970’s,I fell in love with the chrome handles, that the tool box on the Mac tool truck had.I worked at a Chev/Olds dealer all the guys had Snap on boxes and thought I was crazy to buy a box just for the handles. There were 13 mechanics, all old school who taught me a lot,but one thing was always owe the tool guys about $500 bucks and you will always get warranty on your tools,it worked!
