Not sure, but think the deck handle was the same to '47 on the outside anyway. Might check e-bay listings and see if you can get specific details on any that look like what you need. Checked the usual Buick parts places, Bob's and CARS and neither had anything that looked right. Also checked my '28 - '42 Master Parts List and didn't find the deck handle listed. Maybe someone with a Master Parts book that goes further into the 40's can find a listing. Any chance there is a part number anywhere on the handle?

Here are a couple of photos to get you started: On the left side of the steering column the oval hole is where the dash lights, the map lights and clock and lighter wires attach. It is a three position slide switch. The manual picture shows the wiring sequence. The dash photo shows from left to right the following knobs: Head Light; radio on/off/volume; radio channel select; lighter. I don't know where the heater or defrost controls go, but look forward to someone posting more so I can find that out too. The other switch in the first photo is for something not original, so don't let that confuse you.

It was a busy month and I haven't been posting here as I should. Had the Buick in the Car Corral display at the Concour d'Elegance in Arlington, Texas in April, along with about 120 others that were not on the show field. May 6-7 we were on the Spring Tour with our local AACA club group. The tour group met in Weatherford, TX, with the first stop at the National Vietnam War Museum. From there we drove to the historic US Post Office in Mineral Wells for a box lunch and Mineral Wells/Baker Hotel history presentation. After lunch we drove to the Palo Pinto Old Jail and Museum Complex, ending the day at the Holiday Inn Express in Graham. Dinner at the Graham Country Club. On Sunday 7 May, we traveled to Jacksboro and toured Fort Richardson, ending back in Weatherford for lunch at the Vintage Grille and Car Museum which has a collection of 30 classic automobiles and trucks. About 300 miles for the Buick with no issues! Then, this past Saturday the local BCA meeting. Here are a few random photos: -
A couple of years ago I found MasterPro 140 Gear Oil (GL4) at O'Reilly Auto Parts, which has worked better than anything else I found. The syncros in my transmission prefer the heavier weight, and the mild temps here in the winter don't seem to make shifting too hard when cold. I use this in the differential as well.

Bob, You are correct, I wasn't thinking upside down! The standard is 3/16" upside down, so 1/16" less flipped over would be 1/2" measured from the top of the housing. Thanks for the observation.

Bob, if this is the Carter WDO 419S, the original float setting is 3/16", so I would try setting at 1/8" for the Daytona float needle.

Nothing in the '38 Manual about No Rol being an option/accessory. There is a description and a couple of diagrams of it in the '39 Manual. Here are scans of the 2 pages from the '39 Manual that might help if you decide to try to repair it. Good luck, John V. . .

help please decode this serial # for 1939 Buick

Jerry, I think the C in the number you show above is wrong - look on the top of the frame rail just behind the starter to get the frame number. This appears to be a Flint produced frame and the C could be a 0 or maybe a 8, but there were no letters in the frame number then. However, your number 1345_415 falls right in line for '39. The frame and engine serial number will not tell you much. For a 1939 frame number, the first digit is the plant code and the remaining seven digits are a sequential number that should fall into a specific range for 1939. For the engine number, the first digit indicates the car series and the remaining seven digits are a sequential number that should fall into a specific range for 1939. For 1939, these values are: Frame serial number: Plant Name Plant Code Seq Num Start Seq Num End Flint, MI 1 3388547 3596806 South Gate, CA 2 3395088 3592131 Linden, NJ 3 3405088 3593652 -
The '39 Manual refers you to the '38 Manual Battery description (12-40), which says the "ground location has been changed from the frame to the engine located on mounting bolt of ignition coil". It is on the forward coil mounting bolt on my '39 Special.

Between the Buick Club meeting Saturday and the AACA meeting today, about 180 miles on the '39 Buick. Mr. Earl will enjoy that I took photos today and scold me for not taking any on Saturday! Okay, crane your neck since I can't get the orientation right. -

Buick Club meeting in Bonham, Texas yesterday at Pete Phillips' shop. Took the '39 the 65 miles each way and it did fine in the very windy conditions. There are several places where road work had the route narrowed down, and between the wind and the lane reroutes with uneven pavement, it was a struggle to keep the bias plys in the correct lane. Good to have Ben Bruce AKA First Born come down and visit and check out what Pete has in the shop. -

Trans pops out of 3rd gear on deceleration - 1941

Had the same issue with my '39 Special that ended up being the selector lever clip and spring tension on the outside of the transmission. If the '41 has the same sort of clips and springs - there are two on the '39, might try adjusting the bend in the clip to tighten the tension of the one that holds the lever in third gear. Figure 7.10 or 7.11 shows the best view of these clips & springs. -
