You guys tired of me yet?

Ok, gotta do it anyway. While driving this week, I'm about to pass an old motorhome on what looked like about a 1 to 1 1/2 ton Dodge frame. As I was passing I noticed, believe it or not, a Virginia antique vehicle license plate. I'm thinking to myself, "Now, it's the day after New Year's Day. So where is this guy going to or coming from?". Was there a camper show somewhere during the holidays. Maybe an antique show a "soon to be defunct club" was putting on somewhere that I didn't hear about. You see, in Virginia these tags are to be used to go to and from shows, to and from the mechanic's shop, or just around the neighborhood to keep the batteries up. This guy was on the interstate so what do you think guys? Wayne

Come on guys. This is just a general question. It's doesn't need to be moved to rants and raves. The license plate was in Virginia, and yes we have some stupid people down here too. I try not to hire those people. I make them pass the test...WRITE your name down, and your "daddy's" too. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> Wayne

Wayne, is this the first time you've noticed an antique tag being abused this way? I've seen it many times. Some genius realizes he can get cheaper plates if he drives a 25 year old car/truck/mobile home/ etc., and off he goes pulling one over on <span style="font-style: italic">The Man</span>! ShiftyEyes.gif

The guy in the mobile home was risking a seriously fat fine, but generally the police have more important things to do than watch license plates (like look for illegal radar dectectors). Now if he happens to get caught doing something, or needs the assistance of the police somehow, well..... shocked.gifblush.giffrown.gif

First time? No, guess not, but man, an old camper trailer. He certainly wasn't going to a show. Wait a minute... maybe he was going for the "driver's participation chip!" No disrepect to the AACA intended. Didn't get a chance to check out the driver, hope I didn't suck too many aluminum "sheets" off as I blew by. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> Wayne

Hey Ken, A buddy of mine from Florida just e-mailed me with that same answer. Seems Florida is the motorhome capital of the world. No wonder I couldn't find those "delux" chrome house wheels in Virginia like Hugo just got. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> W.

Hi Wayne!

It sounds like that guy is doing the same thing most people do. Taking advantage of a situation. It isn't that different from speeding or telling a fib. In Virginia it is obviously a serious misedemeanor....here in CO it isn't one at all. The question is, would any of us do something like that? Or do we obey the rules? ... all of them? <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Do you feel strongly about not driving your classic except as defined by the law?

Actually, Wayne, the law allows you to pleasure drive the car up to 250 miles from your home at any time, in addition to all the usual old car stuff AS LONG AS IT'S NOT BEING USED AS DAILY TRANSPORTATION. That still doesn't explain how one got on a motorhome.

There's an old Ford truck running around here that is beat all to pieces and has black'n'whites and no inspection sticker. I'm sure some helpful DMV clerk mentioned he could save money by registering said beat-up Ford as an antique. It's obvious that truck is never going to be used and maintained as an antique. Guy gets away with it though- yet almost every time I take one of my properly registered and licensed antiques out some rookie cop hassles me about the tags and lack of inspection sticker and city license. I keep a copy of the law in each car, and just hand it to them. Had one tell me that paper didn't mean sh*t to him and he wrote me an improper registration ticket anyway. Hizzoner scolded the cop in front of the entire courtroom for 1) not knowing the law and 2) for being rude and unprofessional. It was worth taking up the whole day in court for that.

I went to DMV this morning to renew my Mama's handicapped parking card. They were closed Thursday and Friday and back to normal 8-12 Saturday hours today <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />. I got there about 9 and they said there was a two hour wait- the hell with that! <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> What sticks in my craw is this was the third trip I've made down there to renew it. We were first told it would automatically renew. Then we were told her doctor had to fill out the renewal form. Took that down there mid-November and they said it couldn't renew before 60 days prior to expiration. Went back mid-December and they said I had to turn in the old one. Picked it up Friday morning on the way in from work, went over there, closed. And now that c-f this morning. And they wonder why they get poor customer service ratings.

Wayne, Pull into any lumber yard lot in Connecticut and see all the 25 year old pieces of rolling crap with "Historic" plates. House painters prefer rotted station wagons. I'll be the first to go no record that this is what the "Driver Participation Category" at Hershey will look like for the most part. Why park in Harrisberg when you can park on the show field?

I see that at work on a frequent basis. Although these are nice looking vehicles. Gets my goat somewhat, but there will always be people taking advantage of a good thing. mad.gifmad.gif

Driver class at Hershey means National AACA gets the $10 dollars to park and HERCO did not!! Who do you think could use it more??? Make the "show" field the rest of the North Blue Field, (old yellow) and hope the AACA can fill it!! Virg. and Conn. junkers welcome!!! Karl

Thanks Karl. Who determines which cars get on the show field? If the maximum number of cars is say 2,000 (at Hershey) and 1,000 "Drivers" the wrecks with 6-8 people that don't like to walk from far away register, will they be bumping "REAL" show cars? I do know of a pre 1900 car that was bumped years ago because of a paperwork mixup. Sure would hate to see the Hershey meet go down the tubes in an effort to replicate a 25 year old photo of a Kmart parking lot. frown.gif

I saw the DPC last year at Hershey. There were some good looking cars there. I had one registered, unfortunately, it needed some more work before I would trust it on a 300 mile trip. It will make it this year!!! (I hope) grin.gifgrin.gif

Bigrig, maybe the guy bought the plate at a flea market or EBAY. Here in Pa. you have to take pics, front, back, left and right. And there supossed to be of YOUR vehicle. If you go to the DMV and get the cute girl that looks like Shaka Kahn [sp] your OK. If you get the skinny girl with a big gap in her front teeth, your in trouble. She saw a reflection in the fender on my DB and wasn't going to pass it. She also failed a buddies car because the bumpers were rusty. He went home and used aluminum spray paint on them, then she passed it. Our law is based on age and driving restriction, not condition. Howard, I can't imagine you surviving in the same state as my sister. She voted for Billary and Hillary twice and is proud of it. I ussually have an American Rifleman laying handy when she visits, so I can read The Armed Citizen to her.

First, to Rocket, Yes Mr. Beauchamp straightened me out about the 250 mile pleasure ride rule. I told him, I just started the post, you guys could get the details straight. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> Also, here in Virginia, you don't need any pictures of your car or anything, just show up with a valid title and bingo, you're licensed. Nearchc, you sure you ain't been in our local DMV office? You sure did describe my sister to a T, gapped teeth and all. She's single, you know. Said she'd "shore" like to meet you. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Wayne

1937hd45, the "show field" will always bump cars because the OWNER did not do the "paper work" Problem correctly. The most often found "problem" is the "Deadline". Printers have to have time to deal with a 75 page program, Car Corral needs to know how much field they have left on the Giant parking lot. No one wants the pre-1900 car to stay home at any Meet. To all who vend: you have a little over a month to get the renewals postmarked, (first deadline of the Meet).

As for the PA DMV and old cars, don't get me started, Told me: they had to get approval from upstairs because my 30 Pierce had Whitewalls on it, Told me the 67 A/H Sprite could not have a GB oval front plate on it when looking at the 4 Photos!! Up stairs again for approval... Both were "oked" before I left the window, but, when they told me a reflection in the paint looked like a DENT in the 26 Wills photo... confused.gif I thought I would need to check my blood pressure that day. Rust? they better be photos of a car from far far away...attachment: my WHITEWALLS! Karl

Krk...does anyone have a GOOD experience with DMV? I lived in Pennsylvania for most of my teenage life before heading the Nuevo Mexico for college. I loved Bucks County and at times dreamed of living there in a stone farm house with a classic to drive...yeah ok it was a pipe dream. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Anyway...when I moved to Texas, they had to register my 1962 Lincoln as a truck due to the weight! The little thing behind the counter had never seen a car like it before. Sigh.

I would hate to have had the '47 in PA. Out here in God's Country <G> the rules are a lot nicer...of course you still have to make 4 or 5 trips to the DMV cause they always want something you haven't got at the time....really irritating but other than that I can drive my classics with a collectors car plate. I guess the east being so crowded with cars and people has a lot to do with it...and the temperment. I still miss it though.

Pax vobis cum, amici! (That's 'Peace be with you, ya'll!)

And no, Wayne...who could ever tire of you? <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

1937hd45, I am sure they are White walls, not port-a-walls, not marker...wait... I better stop and re-check blood pressure!!! You would think the DMV would be happy to get the sales tax check. the more times back, the longer before they can spend the monies. ( for out of state car owners: .06% of the price, each and everytime a car changes hands) They should say Thank You, knowing this car will sit in a garage a lot more than it going to be driven, NOT wearing out the roads in PA by using the whitewalls in question!!!

I can load up a pile of old car nuts, head to the show field, and put it in the driver class? Karl

This is for everyone on this thread: smile.gif

I don't know if the same Blondie comic strip is in all Sunday papers today, but I imagine it is. If you have it, isn't it a perfect picture of what some on here have been saying about their experiences at their State Motor Vehicles Office? grin.gifgrin.gif

Now the rest of this is for Nearchoclatetown:

I survived in The Peoples Republic of Maryland, but I never said I liked it.

When I was finally able to retire on Dec. 31, 1990, I moved to Wyoming on Jan 1, 1991. It took me all night to pack. grin.gif If your sister is a fan of Billery & Hillery, then she must love ol' Blubber Lips, Beautiful Barbara Mikulski, shocked.gif the Junior Senator from the PRM. I have never seen a picture of her with her mouth shut.

Now don't all you people who are unhappy with your MVAs pack up and come out here, but we have the best MVA imaginable. smile.gif Any locals who might dispute that have obviously never left the state. About the only unusual restriction we have on securing Pioneer plates is that you must have been a resident of the State for at least one year. Since our Pioneer plates are permanent with a one time registration, it keeps the riff raff from coming in and picking up plates and moving on.

Life is less complicated out here in the wilds of Wyo.

hvs smile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gif

PS: If you bring a car into the state that is currently registered and tagged to you in another state, there is no sales tax when you title the car. If you bring in an unregistered vehicle, then it is subject to sales tax.

Also when you buy a car you are taxed on the NET amount you pay for the vehicle. That means on a $20,000 car which was purchased for $10,000 cash and a $10,000 trade in, you pay tax on $10,000, not the $20,000 sticker price. The state gets theirs when the trade in is sold by the dealer. The catch on this is that if you sell the car privately and pay full price for the new one, you pay tax on the entire purchase price. Sometimes, you get less in the long run by selling instead of trading because of the tax difference @6%. Not often, but it can happen.

HVS, the same is true in PA on trades and sales tax. After the antique tag is approved, it is for life of owner with no cost of yearly renewals. $75.00.

As I'm reading some of these post, my blood is boiling.....Some of these DMV's you guys are dealing with would be enough to make you go in there with an AK47! I wonder if they are that concerned with the condition of their school buses!! frown.giffrown.giffrown.giffrown.gif

Karl, since you posted a photo of your Pierce-Arrow I have to ask why you or anyone with a car that looks that nice want to park it in the "Driver Participation Class" between two 25 year station wagons and not among the CLASSICS? A Do Not Judge card in the Classic catagory would be far better in my opinion than being lost in the lot of 25 year old grocery getters.

The California DMV gestapo has to be the pits. About 15 years ago I bought a well used 62 Studebaker 1/2ton truck from a friend who bought it in CA because the cab still had a solid norust floor and it ran. He slapped his Illinois plate on it and tow barred a 64 Lark (Also rust free) behind it until some where in Nevada the truck engine finally died. Put the Lark in front and towed truck to Chicago.

Now it gets good, truck had what California called a "Title in Suspension" red tag against it, former owner had let plates expire with out reason! He just parked it. So I go to Illinois BMV and they want a CA title first. I call CA and they said Oh you have to cough up the 6 years plate fee in arrears first. I said what a minute, truck is in Chicago, its not coming back to CA, engine is dead, how do I get an exemption to have a title for IL?

It came down to getting well acquainted with a poor clerk in Sacramento who just wanted to get the turkey off his books, he had me file an affidavit that it would never return to California and endanger the lives of citizens using their highways or waterways (Trucks are classed along with vessels). It was more grief over red tape than I ever dealt with on any junkyard dog I bought, repaired and retitled.

The truck went on to body off restoration and in Omaha Orange the California rust free body sure looked good here in Illinois. See the attachment, Stude8

1937hd45, I bought this car to be a driver, not to make it a 400 pt restoration. Sitting in the "classic" row is a correct home for this car anytime, however my point is, its my "driver", so the class should welcome it over there too. Just because its 60 years older than most in the lot its still a ride to the show field without having it judged. AACA still benefits from the entry. Did you want shotgun seat too?

Stude8, thats a horror story! and a great looking truck

x98thdrill, I have to say PA's $12.00 a year, for my 10,000 lb enclosed trailer tag is dirt cheap compared to yours, our trailers get a State Inspection each year if GVW is 3001 and larger. cost is set by your local garage, not state.

RWB, keep up the good work! smile.gif Karl
