davidwj
Just got this F5, can't find VIN numbers on this thing in the normal places people said to look. How can I tell what year/engine it is?
Bloo
For what it's worth, they only looked like yours from 1948-1950. Welcome to the forum!

Oldtech
I would expect a plate or numbers stamped on the firewall - engine side. I think the engine number is just above the drivers side water pump on that flat. may tell you something if it's the original engine.
Dave Mellor NJ
The 48-50 Ford trucks are almost impossible to distinguish years, especially the big trucks. there are a few things on the F1,like Chrome grille bars on the 48 but people put them on the 49 and 50. Also the shifter went on the column at some point in 50 but these don'thappen on the big trucks
studeboy
And to muddy the waters further I have a 1948 F-4 and the grill bars are not chrome, painted.
West Peterson
If you remove the transmission cover tunnel, I believe there is a number stamped on the back top surface of the engine, between flywheel and engine. Could be full of gunk, so you'll have to clean it off.
28 Chrysler
On the small trucks I believe the serial number was on the glove box door, big trucks?
davidwj
I will keep looking, maybe try around the engine as people have mentioned. Glove box, clutch housing and left side frame didn't have anything as far as I could find.

I don't think the grille bars were chrome on the big trucks. only the pickups
58L-Y8
Good likelihood its either a 239 ci Ford or 255 ci Mercury which were the majority of Ford engines. The F-7 and F-8 had the 337 ci shared with the Lincolns.
West Peterson
On my 1942 Ford Cab-Over, the serial number plate was on the left side of the driver's seat, visible when you opened the door. I don't know if that's where it was originally, as it was obviously off the vehicle at one time based on the first photo. I also was told there should be a number on the left chassis rail forward of the steering column, but was never able to find it. The number on the back of the engine matched the number on the serial number plate.
davidwj
Again thanks to everyone with the help. After some inspection I decided this one is a bit out of my skillset and am planning on selling. With the information I have listed can anyone share some insight into the rough value of this vehicle? I'd take the 51 Mercury hood ornament off and sell it separately, if it's in decent shape its worth a few bucks on its own - think from about 40 to 75. As for the truck if you aren't in it too deep I list it around 1500 to 2000. You don't want to scare people off with a high price but at the same time, you can't go up when selling but you can always go down.
