The top looks tired but correct, unlike others we've seen here. Price might or might not be be a little high but it's certainly "in the ball park".

This is a rare model, and the "A" community loves a rare model!

I am no model A expert by a longshot! But I believe this is what was called a "Business Coupe" originally. A friend has considered wanting one. Although they sold quite a few of them originally, most survivors were modified into the more popular "Sport Coupe" without the oval corner windows. Most business coupes did not originally have the rumble seat, however it was an option for them, so may well be original to the car?

The Mitchell overdrive is very popular with the model A crowd. They actually manufactured a range of overdrive units for many antique automobiles and other special uses. They are not era correct, but were made to be somewhat inoffensive, and not require major modifications. I am not sure when they were made, but I think during the 1970s through 1990s? They may even still be available? I don't know.

Model A people tend to like to drive their cars, and the overdrive gives them a better sustained top speed and eases the engine's burden of being pushed too much.

Mitchell Overdrives are being made now for Model A Fords.  Can be purchased from either Mitchell or from the repop vendors.                John

You got that right. There are some nice Model A's out there and I regret not being able to drive them.

I think the oval window top is the drawback. I dont care for the looks of it. And for the price if I were looking for an A I could find something without it. Now, if it was the only model A on the market and I just had to have one I could sacrifice, but its going to be a long time before the supply dries up.

Most people do not know about these. Even in model A circles they are largely unheard of. 1928 and 1929, Ford offered too many variations of coupes and four door sedans. Some people say it was Edsel stretching his styling wings, and they may be right. But it was a poor business decision as too many different yet similar models added to production costs more than they added to sales. For 1930/'31 they cut the number of variations down to a reasonable number. These "business" coupes and the "special" coupes are not commonly seen today. Unless someone knows someone that has one of them, one could be very active in model A club activities and go for many years never seeing one of either those two models.

Survival rate on the business and special coupes was poor, on top of poor sales. The special coupe was a unique coupe body, similar to the common standard coupe, except that the rear and corner windows were not part of the main body panels as they were on the standard coupe. Instead they were separate pieces attached (I think by wood?) and had a solid fixed top with material down to the beltline and surrounding the corner and rear windows. When the tops went bad with age, they became expensive to fix, and the body would develop additional problems. Most of them were junked shortly after WW2 when new cars became available again.

The business coupes like this one were too much like the sport coupe, except that most business coupes had a trunk, whereas a lot of the sport coupes got rumble seats. Besides not selling a lot of them, most business coupes that did survive were eventually restored. One of those hobby fad things I sometimes complain about. Restorers usually did not appreciate the business coupe for what it was. It was simple enough to remove the oval window, and copy someone else's sport coupe structure and top to have the more desirable albeit much more common sport coupe.

Years ago, when a few of my best friends were active with the model A crowd, I knew of a couple 1929 "sport" coupes that were known to have originally been a business coupe.

I like it. If I had the money and the room? And were to seriously consider buying a model A? I would consider this one.
