Thanks for posting the picture. My guess is that long haul shipping of cars was done mostly by rail back then, and that a set up like that was used for shorter distances. Just a guess. I'm also guessing their truck engines didn't make a whole lot more power than their car engines. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Ford used the same engine in both cars, pickups and heavy trucks. The heavy trucks were geared lower for power but not speed. JamesR is correct, all long distance shipments were made by rail. I've had Model A's and can't imagine driving that rig!
