1916/18 Dodge

We are currently  enjoying a month in England,  One of the high lights of our visit has been our  time with  fellow Dodge  enthusiast  Anthony  Bryant.  

The outcome of this visit has been my renewed interest in  pre-1920  Dodge 4 cylinder cars. The outcome of this is that I am going home with a selection of Early Dodge manuals and a parts book not to mention a collection of parts including a suitable carburettor. We will return home to Australia in two or three weeks time when I will start to research some possible  basis for my next project .

Well here we are now with friends in Wales continuing to enjoy our visit to the UK. The dreaded Renault Captur is still managing to cart all our stuff including a load of Anthony’s Dodge parts around. These will go into the container with the Lagonda for the long sea voyage home to Australia. I will start work on a shopping list very soon . The first item will be a rolling chassis. Half a dozen (6) wire spoke wheels with suitable hubs may be little more difficult to find but ifI do not start looking I will never find them. 

Any Aussie Dodge owners with surplus parts should contact me, we will be home in just two or three weeks time.!

Hello all Pre-twenties Dodge ‘Enthusiasts’

Another week will see us back at home in Australia. Shortly after I hope to be able to start in earnest on what may be my last serious project,

after all how many of you are about to start into a new ground up restoration at  age 82 &  9months?.????

Good luck Bernie... I've always thought the early dodges were far more interesting the the Model T. They were probably the first automobiles to be purchased in quantity by the US Army for use on the Mexican Border in 1916.

Wonderful cars. Amoung my favorite Marquis.  Dodge Brothers. Such a great history and success story. I’d love to own an early DB car.

 

Wouldn’t it be great to take it to Detroit for the annual DB Club meet? Driving it along Lake St Claire to the now named Dodge street, that meanders through the old Horace Dodge homestead area, Rose Terrace.

Thank you, it may be some time before I will be able to drive anywhere in my Dodge. Right now I am sitting in the Airport in Hong Kong waiting for  the forward flight to take us home to Melbourne, Australia. One of the last things I did before leaving England was to deliver my collection of Dodge parts donated by our friend Anthony Bryant, to be packed into the container along with the Lagonda Rapier for the sea voyage from England to Australia. This trip will take from 8 to 10 weeks.

Unfortunately most of our three months motoring in France & England was done in a modern (hire car) Renault Captur, not my favourite car. ( A long sad story).

Re the 1916/18 Dodge. So far I have just a small collection of parts. In his book, the History of Brooklands (England) Bill Body writes about about "Hornsted" racing a Dodge built from the remains of a car brought back from France post WW1 (Ex US Army, left behind when the "troops" went home). He also offered similar cars for sale.

Hello Again

Who was it that said "Life was not meant to be simple"?

Just a day or two ago my son Steve sent me a link to  a "Car Sales" website with a 1917 Dodge Brothers "restoration project for sale" .

This may mean a slight change in direction but I need to learn a whole lot more about what is being offered.

So far I have just the one photograph. I am now waiting on the vendor to send me some more detail shots of the car. So far all I know is that it is a four seat tourer and sounds as though it is very complete.

Oh yes, it will need a couple of new tires.  Perhaps a wash and a polish too?

Absolutely beautiful....I would just get it reliable and safe, and leave it alone....

 

The best part and worst part of owning a DB, is its a DB....for sure in North America if you need a part for a Ford/Chevy everyone has them...looking for a DB specific part...better to own a Machine/Metal shop you'd get your parts a lot faster....but that is also the best part, not having a Ford/Chevy at the local car show makes you really stand out in front of the crowd....

Here in Australia we are used to all sorts of oddities in motorcars of all ages. Remember it is 102 years old!  Some-how I doubt if this one will find its way to my garage doors. I am waiting for some more photographs to appear in my in-box. Even then it would be a day's drive each way plus over night accomodation to go to look at it. Then if I did buy it, there is the problem of transporting all the loose parts home. 

I just like to keep my friends informed about some of my more interesting activities.

I know I need another project in order to keep me alive and my brain ticking over. 
You may just have to put up with my ramblings for a little while.

Now  I have a problem, I have been given some info about a "Collector" in "country" Victoria, Australia. He has something around 65 to 85 "Dodge Brothers" cars. Again he is almost a full days drive away but two of my local "Dodgy" friends tell me that it is well worth the drive. He does not "do" emails.

I guess there would be a pretty good chance that one of those would be just what you're looking for.  Do take some pictures!  :)

Probably the biggest problem is finding time to go to see what is offering. It is a 6 to 7 hour drive each way and right now we are still in the middle of our winter.  Apparently the man we need to see does not do emails and catching him on the telephone seems to be difficult. But I have not given up yet.

Hello all.

I have now decided that once my Lagonda Rapier returns from England (in about 3 months) I will have my hands full repairing the Lagonda gearbox so expensively "rebuilt by a  specialist in Central Europe"!

That being so I will not have time to be doing anything else!

 Sadly I must also admitt that I have thrown away nearly all my "play money" on what can only be described as "A Comedy off Errors".
