Kosage Chavis
Is there any special way to remove both hard lines, one from the OIL pressure gage and the other from the TEMP gage. Thanks for any advice.
buick5563
You can't remove the hard line from the temperature sending unit. You must remove the bulb from the rear of the driver's side head. CAREFULLY! I think the oil sending tube just unthreads with a 5/16" wrench.
Kosage Chavis
Got the oil pressure line off already. I was worried you might say that about the temp line. I will have tackle that another time. Thanks for the needed advice!
Kosage Chavis
I do have another question...I will still need to run this car at some point. I assume I will need to cap the same oil pressue gage line that was just disconnected. Where is the best place to cap off? Thank you.
Ttotired
Back of the engine where the line connects and also a plug for the coolant as well. I would go and buy cheap aftermarket gauges myself to replace the factory ones (until you can put them back) as I dont think running an engine with no oil pressure warning is smart
Beemon
At least you have the luxury of, if for whatever reason your gauges don't work, you can substitute large round aftermarket ones in their place. Both my temp and oil pressure gauges stick because they bent when I removed them to have my speedometer repaired. I have to live with the temp gauge, but at least I can replace the oil gauge. Kosage Chavis
Question... Is it necessary to unbolt the steering column bracket to remove the front dash unit from the car? Thank you.
Paul Falabella
Got to this topic, 1955 Steering Column Height I found it necessary to get the dash back in my car after I painted it. It's a fiddly job.
old-tank
Easiest with all the steering out...or at least the jacket.
Kosage Chavis
More questions...is there a way to remove the ignition lock assembly from the front dash? Same question applies to the windshield wiper switch and exterior light switch as well. Thanks as always.
MrEarl
I know procedures for removing the light switch and ignition are in the shop manual, not sure about the wiper, I recall never being able to find that in the 54 manual. To remove it, push in on the washer button then turn clockwise and pull out, then remove the nut similar to how you removed the heater switch It's easier to get to the wiper after the light switch is out of the way. It's easier on all three, ESPECIALLY the ignition if the whole dash is just removed first.

Carefully pry under the wiper switch arm and pull straight out; the rest should be self explanatory. See my website for tips on the ignition switch....still easiest if the dash is out. Kosage Chavis
Thank you both for your advice. I will put this to work this coming weekend...I hope. Mr Lamar, been trying to get a hold of you. There's something that I still owe to you. Email me when you get a chance.
Kosage Chavis
Ok, so removing the ignition, wiper and light switches went pretty smoothly. Everything that holds down the front dash from being removed, has been removed. The only thing preventing me from removing the front dash is the steering column...which leads me to my next question. How do you lower the steering wheel enough to remove the front dash? Thank you.
buick55
I just removed the 4 bolts from the steering gear box and lift it up a bit. so the steering wheel inside comes down und you can easily remove or mount the dash.

Kosage Chavis
Does anyone have pictures of a 4 way power seat for a 55 buick century or special? I would like to see some shots of the seat skirts so that I can see the difference between the seat skirts with power seats and manual seats. Thank you. Kosage Chavis
Thanks so much for that Mr Willie. So if I am removing a power seat from a junked car, how can you tell whether one seat is 4 way or 2 way. I assume that a 2 way seat has only 1 motor versus the 4 way seat that has 2 motors. Kosage Chavis
Okay, how about this...can a 2 way seat be easily made into a 4 way seat by simply adding an extra motor.

Paul Falabella
Conversely, a four way seat can be made a two way seat by removing a motor. Joke, c'mon, it's Halloween!

Fr. Buick
Or you can keep an eye out for a '56 three-way seat and be done with the plastic seat-surround, and have only one motor to deal with. Almost a bolt-in deal.
Kosage Chavis
I would definitely be interested in a 6-way power seat if one was available.
buick5563
Just installing a four way seat is hard, Kosage. We can help (of course), but unless you are really short you will be all the way down and all the way back. This upgrade isn't worth it in my opinion. Kosage Chavis
Well, I am only 5'-8". But either way, I have made up my mind about installing the power seats. It just depends on what I can get my hands on first...the 4-way or 6-way. I do appreciate the advice and I am always confident in the help of my Buick brothas!
buick5563
I hear ya, man. I am just starting to get slightly concerned that you are biting off too much all at once. Just remember to work on restoring parts every once in a while so you don't have too many pieces of old dirty parts laying around.
