old-tank
BobI have never seen anything like that and don't know what it is for. Looks to be associated with the right side lower control arm---what is it made of and where is it attached.Willie
buick5563
Yeah, there is nothing that even would be necessary to push out of the way, like a heater hose or something. From the pic, it looks like it is either welded or riveted to the lower control arm. I've never seen one either, Bob.

buick5563
Or when the car is on the lift with the engine running, it is exactly the size of a mechanics head, reminding him to not stick his face in the fan?
Larry Schramm
I am going to guess that it is a steering stop. It is there to keep the wheels from turning into the fender well area too far. They were common on vehicles that I worked on in the 60's and 70's. Usually attached to the lower control arm,.... but ??

MrEarl
If Bob is puzzled, I'm not even going to try....Best answer....the only time I've seen Bob puzzled was when on our way to Ames and somewhere just west of Davenport the GPS lady told us to head east when we were trying to go west. That only lasted a minute though, Bob told her kiss his a** and that she needs to ref*****calculate.
progoofoff
Willie,Made of steel.Larry,The tire would hit the stablilizer bar before reaching this "thing".Mike,Your answer doesn`t suprised me.I looked underneath to see how it was attached and grab hold....it fell off in my hand.Confused?...to say the least. old-tank
Possibly ran over something (Prius?) and captured this piece. There may evidence of other damage to the underside. The sway bar looks like it is bent(?).
progoofoff
Not likely it was accidently thrown up to the lower "A" frame. It fit too snugly. It weighs more than 2 Lbs so part of the hood latch isn`t the answer. Sway bar is factory bent.I think it was on there for a reason. Just don`t know what it was.Bob Edited November 23, 2010 by progoofoff (see edit history)

NTX5467
A vibration damper to decrease certain harmonics on certain road surface textures with particular brands of tires at particular inflation pressures during certain times of the year AND at particular road speeds in certain parts of the World with specific brands of gasoline and motor oil and chassis lube.If the car isn't moving, it isn't needed.Regards,NTX5467
buick5563
If you turned the spring metal that is riveted on 180 degrees, it could be a very heavy, very specific feeler gauge?I'm puzzled too, Bob. After cleaning it up, it does look like something NOT cobbled together by a back yard mechanic, but if it just pulled off, how could it have stayed there for 100k miles? progoofoff
Come to think of it....I saw one of these on a 1939 Edsel dump truck.how could it have stayed there for 100k miles? Slow, careful driving.Bob
