  1. If you are going to rebuild everything, the 6 volt system worked fine when the truck was new. Staying with 6 volt you do not need to worry about lights, gauges, ignition system, radio if it has one, and the list goes on. IMO and many others, going to 12v is trying to cover up something that is worn out and needs replacement or repair. The most important item is to be sure the battery cables are large enough and with good connections at each end. Do no use 12v cables that you can buy at the local auto parts store as they are too small.
  2. OMG. What a conglomeration of parts and the chickens are frosting on the cake.
  3. Like said above, the 7 blade connectors have a position to have 12 volts go to the trailer. If I was doing that, (and I have thought of doing it) I would run a separate wire from the trailer connector pin to the fuse block and put it in an ignition on only location. Be sure to put a fuse at the fuse block end of the wire in line with the wire to the trailer.
  4. Just a thought, you might want to put a 50/50 solution of acetone & auto transmission fluid in the cylinders and let it sit for a while to see if it will break free.
  5. I have these numbers off an old fire truck. Can someone check to see what the vehicle started out as. I have misplaced my vin information. Thanks Engine Number 161590 and Chassis Number 161556
  6. I got a request to post some pictures. Indianfour: Larry: "Could you identify two old disk wheels (marked: 600--650x20). I don't know how or when I acquired them but I have a 1927 Jordan Great Line Victoria Custom sedan and it has artillery wheels using the same size tires. I have not found any identifying marks on them. I wanted to put them on AACA forums but unable to get the pictures on there. However, I can email them to you if I had your Email address. Thanks a lot!!" Here are the wheels if anyone can identify them. Thanks,
  7. Generally speaking, a fire doubles in size every 20 seconds without intervention depending on the environment.
  8. Marty, Must be a disease. The front of your trailer looks just like mine. The cardboard on the floor also looks the same.
  9. A scanner is your best friend with late model cars. It will zero in on the area of the engine to work on. The probable fix as 95Cardinal states is a new harmonic balancer and a crankshaft position sensor. You will need to be certain that the location of the sensor is accurate so it does not hit the reluctor wheel (fins) on the back of the harmonic balancer or you will need another sensor and maybe a new balancer.
  10. I am of the "eeludddy" group that I also work on both ends of the automotive spectrum. I was working on my 1915 Buick truck today and also on my Dad's 2000 Cadillac that had a check engine light on. It was very easy to use a scanner on his car to see that the engine had a misfire code in the system and it was on cylinder #3. Now all I needed to do was check #3 spark plug, wire, and coil as it was intermittent which kind of eliminated a mechanical problem. It eliminated the run around of checking the other 5 cylinders. Fortunately I have the tools to work on both ends of the automotive spectrum, at least for GM cars.
  11. Hey, If I can not use it or have plans to use it, then time to part with it. Sell it, give it away, scrap it, or throw it in the trash. The old question is "Do you own your stuff or does it own you?" Trying to be sure I can find what I have to fix what I have.
  12. As I said in the second posting, older heavy duty probably ok, but new light vehicles with glow plugs, not a good idea.
  13. I had two of them. One that I purchased in the 60's and another that I acquired in a building purchase. Looked at the prices on craigslist, ebay and determined that they are not of any value, especially with shipping, etc since I have a truck and car trailer. I just donated them to The Parade Company http://www.theparade.org/ for them to use to tow floats during the Thanksgiving parade. Best place that I could find for them to go to.
  14. I have heard of quite a number of diesel engines used in cars and light trucks of the last 30 years where persons used ether to start and the result was catastrophic. Maybe on older heavy equipment you could use ether, but not on light vehicles that I am aware of.
  15. Must be red neck. The link does not work for me.
  16. What you NEVER want to do is use ether in a diesel engine. That will sure bend rods and a lot of other damage.
  17. I agree on why trying to change to 12 volt. Usually adds more challenges than just fixing everything back to 6 volts. If it is a current radio that you want, purchase an inverter to step up the voltage for the radio to 12 volts. Just IMO also.
  18. That is a very creative way to overcome a problem. Never heard of that before.
