  1. This hit my area a long time ago. Prices on used stuff always go up for tax return season and they just kept going up for a while. I see plenty of inventory on lots but the quality of much of it may have gone down. A friend just traded his two year old, 9k mile truck on new one. He went from 6.0 small rear doors to 5.3 full rear doors and they paid him. That said, finally seeing some reasonable asking prices on older stuff.
  2. @artie rossi what model of Maxwell are you working on? Although over in Indiana we have some knowledge of the 30 horse G and E series as well as the earlier large 2cyl (n and h) with a few people not too far away with knowledge of the smaller 4cyl cars. If working on an a small 2cyl with planetary transmission there are a lot more people to go to and I could likely find you some contact information, although I have limited experience.
  3. I am simply not the guy to give my contact information (or time) to this or one of the other companies offering such a service... but am idly curious what the rates and actual agreement look like. I wonder if any of the well known collector car insurance companies have done the research as they have certainly been contacted.
  4. I have seen this car.... about 25 years ago. I liked it then and I still do.
  5. 62-68k base price plus the cost of a good quality doner vehicle... but it can have engine issues. Pretty sure I won’t be writing them a check.... but one of the Porsche replicars would be really really fun after they were done with it.
  6. I love talk like a pirate day... It allows me to truly test the limits of how far my daughters eyes can roll back into their heads. We wear AaARRRghile and eat AAARRgtichokes.
  7. Many years ago I was signaling a left turn and the passenger in the car going around me on my left gave me a five. I am very glad that never trusting the guy behind you to see your signal (hand or electric) was a part of my early driver training.
  8. ‘07 with a very similar 2cyl setup to the OP’s vehicle.
  9. We had a Cartercar that didn’t leak oil as quickly as the lubricator supplied it. On tours part of the daily maintenance was to open a petcock and get rid of the oil accumulation in the crankcase. We often talked about dumping that oil right back into the oiler but I do not believe this was ever done.... by us.
  10. If that is the biggest mistake you make through this ordeal.... you are doing great!
  11. At Hershey last year restoration supply sold me everything I needed to get some lights in the Hupmobile. We no longer have the car, but I kept the fire bug for authentic headlight use.
  12. thanks to you, this is my reaction every time something gets posted to the “what is it” section. Glad you and yours are safe.
  13. To me the biggest advantage of a retired fire truck during the wildfires would be using the lights, sirens, and pushing mass to get the hell out of there.
  14. I think the east vs west salt air thing has to do with humidity more than proximity to the ocean. Salt+humid air to make it stick to things equals rust. You could cover bare metal in salt and it wouldn’t rust in a vacuum.
  15. The same AC unit that is corroding away in the salt air on the outside will remove salt from the air on the inside. The salt will stay with the water in the air and go down the condensate drain. So, the answer is the air conditioned garage you always wanted anyways. I will also add, for you guys on the coast: Rinse off the coils on your outside unit regularly (monthly). A garden hose and light pressure is all it takes. Air conditioners last less than half as long on the coast as they do inland and that little bit of missing maintenance is the only reason why. In Indiana we have to do it a lot less, just to clean dirt and cottonwood off. Actually, in Indiana don’t maintain the equipment, so I can replace yours sooner.
  16. Interesting, I have a friend with several RR that worked for a RR dealer in his youth. This has to be a rare combination.
  17. what was the occasion? It seems that a lot of rich people showed up.
  18. For a couple of years, more than a decade ago, I worked with one of the inspection/appraisal groups that advertise a lot in some of the publications we all get. They sent me on runs for pre purchase inspections, insurance appraisals, post accident appraisals (what was it worth before it was totaled). Generally, on the pre-purchase inspections, an assessment of condition... both in general (how does the car present), authenticity (this was tricky but they always managed to get me on the phone with someone to tell me what to look for... and got me on the phone with the guy on site if it was something more in my wheelhouse than his), and finally nitpicking every detail. Usually around 250 pictures and a several pages of written description, including driving notes. We never got into value on those. If requested, I would even call the prospective buyer while I was with the car. I suspect I killed more sales than I helped. insurance appraisals went very much so like what you guys are describing. On one of the pre purchase inspections I was sent to a good friends house to look at a Packard 180 limo, when I took the call I told the company I have known the car for ten years and I can tell you it’s a great car right now. Then I went and did the inspection, incorrect this, incorrect that, serious rust issues present and some less than perfect repairs. Any company that is going to charge you 350-1000 bucks to look at a car will gladly send you a copy or two of past reports, or even reports done by the person actually going to see the car. At least then you will know the quality of the information you can expect for your money. If they won’t give you that... keep dialing! There are lots of inspection companies.
