  1. Hello again , You may have to have to chrome door and quarter panel to covers re chromed ,hard to find in good condition, stainless molding on front fender will interchange between any 1946 to 1948 Super model 50 ,but that is in the future. As you are getting it driviable.hopefully you won’t find too much rust on floor panels,I once had a 52 Plymouth when removing floor mats and carpet from it most of the floor came with it!! just made new floor pans and welded them it . You never know what surprises you find , on the bright side I did find some loose change and a 1954 New York map also one woman’s nylon ,wonder how that found its way to back seat ?
  2. No ,nothing happens too fast with a Dynaflow!!In 1949 factory gears were either 4.454 or 4.1 on Supers need the low gears to compensate for the transmission, even then ,not a car you want to take to a drag strip.
  3. If block and head is not cracked or damaged rebuild of your engine may be the way to go Parts like rings ,pistons and bearings are available in oversized for rebore and crank grind sizes.trying to find a good used engine may be hard I once did this on a 39 Ford and wound up with an engine worse that I had in the 1st place, then had original engine rebuild, just my experience. Also everything will fit without having part interchangeably problems .Good luck on what you choose to do.
  4. Hello ,want leads for purchase of ring and pinion gear set for 49 Super with Dynaflow currently 4.454 ratio.Thank you ,Gary Goodman

  6. Hello I will as I said earlier it will be taken apart in October the plan is to remove the rear end from car and take the carrier assembly to a mechanic that is familiar with the older Buick’s this way car is not taking up space in his garage if run into a part problem and also by doing most of the work should cost less.hoping it is the pinion bearings they are easer to find, ring gears either used or nos.
  7. Hello,a 40 or 50 model,Special and Super, use the same 248 c.l. engine up to 1950 then used tha 263.any of the Century,Roadmaster,or Limited use the 320 c.l. Buick had an extensive engine replacement program in that era so not to surpriseing to find a newer engine in a older car. Replacement engine were usually black.
  8. Hello again it’s a Dynaflow so it was possible it’s the original gearing they are marked “11-49”which would work out to 4.454.the howling is most pronounced on acceration also the pinion seal leaks so feel it will be better to overhaul it.
  9. Hello thanks for the reply’s I took back cover off ,pulled rear axles they had been serviced recently well packed with grease and seals also were good , checked back lash on ring gear ,it’s at .013 ,this is over tolerance ,could be pinion bearings or ring gear , plan to pull it down in October and want to get parts lined up for rebuilding it’s 4.455 ratio
  10. Hello, I had 47 56c , they are very nice car ,currently have A 1949 56c .If you should need body parts you will find that the fender extensions are particular to a given model, they don’t interchange between a Super or Roadmaster ,also the molding trim is particular to the convertible,Either model.Good luck on it ,sometime it can be difficult when you find problems but it’s worth it when you can drive it .My car had the same interior as in post, and used a Lebaron Bonney kit ,seats were the hardest to do ,had to get fome cut for them.Best of luck, Gary
  11. Hello anyone know of a part source for ring and pinion gear for 1949 Buick Super with Dynaflow? I have a howling noise most noticeable at 40 to 50 mph.Plan to take it apart in October and want to get part located beforehand. Thank you.
  12. A video would be helpful everyone who owns a Dynaflow eventually winds up trying to fix leaks . A 356 912 Porsche engine rebuilder did do a video on rebuilding those engines they are worth there weight in gold now since he died.
  13. Hello,I think some of the main Buick venders , Bobs ,and Cars of NJ make repro exhaust manifolds. Mine 1949 has one installed before I bought it by previous owner it works ok but doesn’t have the carb pre heater flap on center part of manifold,They are not cheap around 800.00$ they do unfortunately crack, a used one might not be any better.
  14. Hello,One thing you may want to check is the plate the points are mounted on ,the small balls that let the it rotate sometime wear into the cast iron body ,this was common at the time a repair kit was issued that consisted of a grooved ring that fitted into the body to replace that machined area and three under size balls to replace the originals.Just check it to make sure it rotates freely or timing will be affected, the original points and condenser will work fine set it at factory specs .Some of the “improvements “ aren’t.
  15. Hello I had only an electric pump on my 49 replaced it with a rebuild original. If you do install an electric pump mount it close to the tank ,they push fuel better than pull it.Many English cars ,71 MGB for example have only an electric. On vapor lock ,I had a 1941 Packard that was notorious for that , found out the pre heater on exhaust manifold was stuck closed ,freed it up and solved the vapor lock. If I install an electric pump I install a on Off switch used it only on start up
  16. Hello, you probably all ready checked the timing also spark advance if those are off may cause engine to run hot .I have a 49 the spark advance was hanging up causing the timing to be erratic.hope this helps .Last year at the Buick meet in Allentown I was surprised at the number of 1935 Buick were there, attractive car.
  17. 1938 Buick’s are one of the best looking pre war cars built I like to have a slant back Century sedan, just having completed body restoration on my 49 I can appreciate the work involved on the 38 .If one watches older TMC movies from the late 1930,s and 40,s Buick’s show up a lot.Hollywood had class then.
  18. Hello,It was one of the 'improvements " that was made on it before I bought it, much like the home made wiring harness that was replaced with a original reproduction . I plan to replace starter when I find a good rebuildable core .car also was missing the fuel pump with only an electric that was problematic. this was also replaced with a rebuilt original.
  19. Hello, recently had some trouble with starter on my 49 Buick that was converted to 12 volt with hi torque starter. It engaged and wouldn't stop, thought problem may be in start switch on Carburetor, that checked out ok, then checked the safety switch for Dynaflow , it also was good .Finally found that there is a relay wired into the hi torque starter, it was a 5 pin BOSCH relay that was stuck closed .Removed and replaced it ,problem solved.Plan to carry a spare in case this happens again . Just thought I would pass along my experience in case someone else has the same problem . Gary
  20. Hello, Commenting on early model Convertible, check the spare tire mount in trunk ,early 1949 lay flat on floor, later sit vertical in recess in trunk floor pan. also top boot area is a steel enclosure, later models have a canvas top well filler. The trunk lid is also different , later models are higher and squared off, early 49 look similar to the 1948 models .in fact early models are very similar to 1948 in regards to trunk area. Hope this helps.
  21. Hello, i checked on my 1949 Buick Super, unmounted spare rim , no date code ,only stamped "made by motor wheel" on inside rim at tire mount area. I assume these are the original wheels from when car was built, stamped steel with rived clips for hubcaps.15 inch for 7.60 tires , same rim may have been used on Roadmasters with 8.20 tires. Gary
  22. Hello, I looked in master parts book and it seems that the sedan and estate wagon used the same windshield,4552581 rt side,582 is left.On the moldings it seems to have them for closed car being the same .At least the side glass is flat and could be cut. Please check with a glass specialist before ordering. As they were Ionia bodies, they parts book refers to Fisher bodies ,I hope this helps and good luck on your car. Gary
  23. Hello, I might take up the challenge, hope to complete the work on my 1949 Super, will have to put at least 2500 miles on it to exceed the amount of time spend underneath and body work on it!! Interior and some assembly still needed at this writing , also hope snow will be gone and warmer weather soon.I had enough in ERIE,Pa
  24. Hello, try www.restorationstuff.com or www.restorationspecialties.com they carry some hard to find hardware for older cars.,may have a screw for the spotlight or something that will work .
  25. Hello, In reference to the Buick replacement engines , a friend of mine once a Buick mechanic in that era, recalled the replacement engine program ,with a well used 1939 Buick getting the new engine,he said they would have to re use the front engine mounts as the "re" engines would have had the block set up for the higher engine mounts used from 1948 and up.The engine would have the updates to the engines comparable the the year of manufacture ,a 1949 engine would have the hydraulic valves, replaceable connecting rod bearings , etc, With new cars hard to get Buick, aggressively pursued the "re" program, in some cases offering financing on them.
