  1. How did the Edison/Ford Estate fare? I've tried to look it up but can't find any info.
  2. Fantastic show all the way around. When I retire soon it will be hopefully and annual trip for us.
  3. Thanks for sharing your project. When our cars are connected to loved ones the restoration takes on a whole new meaning. I love your exhaust on the engine start up. Keep up the good work and keep us posted.
  4. Hey Joe, hope you are doing well. Been missing your posts!
  5. I love my Craftsman tools and they are my go to items but when I grab whatever out of their assigned drawer, I also grab my grandfather's ballpeen hammer with the cracked handle. I know it is weird but Grandpa is always helping me even if he has been gone for way to long. Wear my dad's hat when doing yard work. Yeah, I'm sentimental to the extreme!
  6. I applaud you for your courage and look forward to taking the restoration journey with you through this forum.
  7. On another post I saw a similar discussion. Someone posted that there is an instrument that a body shop would have that can test the thickness of the paint and give you an idea if it is original. At least that is how I understood the conversation.
  8. Not to go off topic but how did you strip the paint off? Looks like you did a great job!
  9. Newly married, going to college and broke is a good way to set this up. Probably should say, not a mechanic either. Had an older car that would do some crazy stuff when you pressed the gas pedal hard. Motor would rev up and stay that way until you shut it off. Wife did not like driving the car that way to say the least! My mechanic skills were maxed out immediately as this had to be a huge problem. So, I took the car to a mechanic who was the son of an acquaintance/friend. The verdict came back that I needed a valve job. Didn't know what a valve job was but I did know I had a problem so I said, fix it. Got the car back and the bill and still the car would stick wide open upon a rapid acceleration. Now broker than before I decided to look at it myself and noticed the motor tipped up toward the passenger side, (if I remember right) and would lodge there until the ignition was turned off. Upon a closer look it was evident the driver's side motor mount was broken. I fixed that myself and all was well. Lesson learn: Try to do it yourself first and never trust a mechanic! You might have to use one, but never blindly trust!
  10. I have a small eclectic collection of pre-war cars and enjoy mostly just looking at them. The one I miss the most that I used to have is a 56 Chevy Nomad. Youthful memories connection I guess.
  11. Great looking car for sure! Funny how times change, I don't imagine we will see the use of "Dictator" again for a car name.
  12. I guess many of us are around the same age and thinking along the same lines. My wife and I moved from Florida about a year ago to take care of her parents here in NC. We are near Winston Salem so there is plenty to do if you want. We could have never afforded a house in the area of FL where we were living for my work but could have moved to other cheaper areas, and in my opinion, nicer areas if we had wanted to. My wife's parents and our kids living in NC are what brought us here. Insurance and taxes are less than $2K a year on a 1600SF house and a 24x30' detached garage for my cars. I would guess the price would be in the high $290's. I went to college in Greenville and it is a nice city and has some very nice surrounding small towns. The humidity in the summer can be rough but that seems to be the case for this whole region. I have a small shop also that has A/C so I can work cool. I think our highest electric bill this winter was $230.00 and never that high for summer cooling. Our town has a huge car culture and a large car show each month down town. When my in-laws are no longer with us my wife and I are talking about buying a couple acres close by and building a low maintenance "Barndominium" for our retirement years.
  13. Funny you mention Mexico. I used to live in central Mexico and had some chrome work done at a very reasonable price and good quality. When checking with a chrome shop be sure to ask if they can do bumpers. My last chrome shop I used in Florida could not do long items.
  14. Was talking last night with my brother in-law who is in the market for a new truck. He just came from the Ford and Chevy dealer and they had no trucks for sale. I see where Ford has stopped taking orders for the new Maverick pickup until next year. It is an apples and oranges comparison to a work truck but seems to have found a niche. I work for a major trailer manufacturer that builds car haulers that can be pulled by a 3/4 ton pickup or bigger and it amazes me how many new trucks pull into our yard to hook up to their new trailers. We have seen some cancellations but those are snatched up by the next person in line.
  15. Well, that sounds like an interesting project. I hope you will keep us posted on what you find and your plans.
  16. The radio really looks good. Did you restore it to factory specs or use modern internals? I assume you are going to just get the car running and enjoy? I can't imagine it ever looking better than it does now. I love unrestored cars!
  17. Taking my 36 Ford Fordor Deluxe apart over 50 years ago to restore it. Paint man lost interest and it has sat neglected for all these years. At 65 I am now restoring it and plan to have it done by the time I turn 70.
  18. At this time the floor is 3/4 T&G OSB on 2x12 floor joist. I think the joist are 16" OC. I had my 53 Chevy Convertible, 31 Ford Rdst. 36 Ford Fordor, Model T and another Brass era car in there without problems. Not much room left but the floor held them all without problems. I plan to beef up the floor when I finish the inside.
  19. While not a very large garage I am very blessed to have this 24x30 building behind my house. I am currently putting in a concrete ramp and side parking area. The inside is not finished but hopefully by the end of summer it will be all wired, insulated and drywalled. I'm not sure what type of floor I will go with as the building is off the ground with wood joist and plywood floor system at this time. I would like to go with the old style 2" oak strip flooring but may go with a fire retardant flooring of some type. I do have a smaller shop that I use for dirty work so eventually the larger building will be my man cave/museum.
  20. I bought a really bad 41 Ford Convertible for $50.00 when I was a kid, about 50 years ago. The car had been owned by a rich guy on Jupiter Island in Florida. In the glove box were lots of old road maps and love letters from his girl friend. I'm sure his wife would have liked to have seen those. Dumb me, I didn't even offer to sell them back to him! Anybody know where a really rusted 41 Ford Ragtop that came from Florida is today?
  21. When I was a kid growing up just north of WPB in the 60's my grandfather used to take me to a warehouse in West Palm that a friend of his owned that was full of old cars. From a kids perspective it was a magical place with all the huge very old original cars. I can't remember the owner's name but it seems like he either owned or was high up in the Rinker concrete business. Also seems like his son in-law had a Model A Mail Truck if that rings a bell with anyone. Good memories without all the details leave you scratching your head. Can anyone put a name to the owner? And better yet, some pictures!!!
  22. If a car rusts under water is it still called "Surface" rust?
  23. Here is a link for a short tour. It was a nice museum. https://www.hemmings.com/about-us/sibley?page=1
  24. I would use a marine finish as boats are used to being left outside.
