Note: The Cadillac Series 61 returned for 1941 to replace LaSalle in the same price segment, generated a massive response by the public, 29,258 cars. Along with the Series 62, 63, 67, 75 and 60 Special, they were the culmination of General Manager Nicholas Dreystadt relentless seven year program to rationalize Cadillac to one chassis with Fisher bodies shared with other GM Divisions. In the process, he redefined what constituted the owner-driven American luxury car. Success was 66,168 1941 Cadillacs sold. For comparison, 1934, the year Dreystadt became General Manager, Cadillac and LaSalle combined sold 13,037 total. This Series 61 shared the fastback B-Bodies with Buick Century, Olds 70 Series and Pontiac Streamliner Torpedo.

  4. Good Heavens! It's Helen Isaman's purple '59 Catalina convertible! Other than the white top (her car had a black top), its a dead ringer for the only Pontiac convertible in town when I was a kid.

  6. Mercury called it 'Salmon', shows up in some of their 1964 advertising. The base 1964 engine was a 390 c.i. FE. Here are a few more pictures I saved in anticipation of posting this car.
  7. Coachbuilder were reputed to set very high quality standards for all bodies that left their shop, Francis Willoughby, Herman Brunn, and Rudy Creteur come to mind. Perhaps Walt would share some anecdotes about their methods of operation?
  8. Before you use any fine grit rubbing compound, it would be wise to consult with paint care specialist who can advise best how to revive and preserve that factory-applied finish. I've read they use a 1500 or 2000 grit wet sand so as not to remover much of the color layer. Valspar varnish was a commonly advertised product then for auto finishing. Proceed carefully and you should be able to achieve an acceptable result.

  10. Yes, the 23rd Series Custom Eights have less chrome trim than the 22nd Series Custom Eights.
  11. The painting process before the advent to Duco was a time-consuming, laborious one, a real production bottleneck. Paints were applied with brushes, first multiple coats of primer with rub downs with fine grit between each, plus lengthily dry cycles. Next was the color coats with the same process, finally it was varnished to seal and protect the multiple layers. This was the process for color coats, The black Gilsonite paint Rusty mentioned was used on the parts what were likely to take the most dirt and hits from road stone etc. Black, because it absorbed heat fastest, was used on metal parts that could withstand a baking/drying oven. Its the reason behind the old saying about Ford in any color as long as its black. Ford, because of the high production volumes, had to use the paint and process that would dry the fastest. It was also easy to match/touch-up when damaged. The Big Six body, if dark blue, was painted with the process described, might respond with very fine grit rubbing and a varnish coat. Try a small spot first to see if this is so.
  12. Willie Brewster was reputed to carefully appraise all custom bodies in process in the shop. Should he find a painted panel he thought wasn't up to his high standards, he would remove a sharp object from his pocket and scratch a big "X" in the paint on the offending panel. Walt Gosden can verify if this is correct, no doubt knows other examples from the coachbuilding trade. Read Walt's comments below as to the veracity of this anecdote. It's from the source we have that best can relate the truth of the practices then.
  13. Bryan I have to credit Robert J Neal for my detailed education how to tell the difference. His book Packard 1948-1950 is invaluable. BTW, I recognize this '50 Custom Eight as a recent CL Picking. I can't blame him for trying to turn a profit, though I suspect he is in for a rude awakening to the realities to this segment of the collector car market. Good luck to him, I hope he finds that rare car a good home.
  14. Bryan, Chrome molding encircling the trunk, wide wood door window friezes, chromed window reveal moldings both inside and out. Three ribbed seat and kick panels, the 356 ci centered distributor, its definitely a 2352 Custom Eight. The 2372 Super Deluxe lacks those details but has the egg-crate grille and trunk valence trim.

  18. You are right, that's about the best we can hope. It would be a good car for a young person to learn the basics on. Its simple and straight forward enough, and cheap enough to purchase at the outset. Studebaker Champion parts are universal for many model years so parts availability is quite good.

There were 10,525 four door sedans produced.
  20. Your 1950 Packard is a 23rd Series Custom Eight, not a Super Eight. On the data plate on top of the cowl in front of the driver you will see "2352-5-####". This is a late top-of-the-line Packard, one of 870 built before Custom Eight production ended for good. The engine is the largest displacement 356 cu. in, nine-main-bearing straight eight.
  21. A better look at that Lincoln K Willoughby phaeton on its way with Howard Hughes.
  22. A better look at the '34 Packard phaeton - Wendell Wilkie campaign parade?

I installed a new fuel level sender, a new fuel filler grommet, brazed and installed an extension on the fill line. New fuel pump, fuel line to the carb. and a rebuilt carb with fuel filter.
