  1. John: Its anecdotal from seeing the cars at shows, car corrals and in junkyards but the walnut door friezes in the 1966 Cadillac 60 Specials and Fleetwood Broughams were thick, having enough material to refinish if they became water stained or sunlight damaged. Beginning with the 1967 model year, the wood veneer was a thin sheet bonded to a backing. When these became wet, the veneer peeled from the top downward as seen on this otherwise fine 1969 model. A car caught in one drenching rain with the windows down was enough to start the process. The same problem beset the 1961-'63 Lincolns that had the walnut interior trim option. Steve

  4. Mike: When the all-new 1949 Lincolns and Lincoln Cosmopolitans came out, the Lincoln-Mercury Division management wanted them not to be at a sales disadvantage versus Cadillac. Hydra-Matic was really the only viable automatic transmission available to purchase on a proprietary basis that would handle the horsepower and torque of the 337 ci L-Head V8. GM had been supplying other automakers for decades with various components and systems such as Harrison radiators, Delco electrical components, Rochester carburetors, supplying Hydra-Matics was just another GM product made available to other manufacturers. In addition to Lincoln, Nash/AMC, Kaiser-Frazer, Hudson, Willys all purchased them from GM. Demand for automatic transmission was high throughout the buying public, where they were made or who supplied them was not much of a consideration. Folks just wanted the driving ease an automatic transmission afforded, particularly those in the upper-medium and luxury segments, Lincoln used them through the 1954 model year. Ford teamed up with Borg-Warner to develop the Ford-O-Matic/Merc-O-Matic for 1951 eventually developing a version that was ready to be offered as Turbo-Drive for the 1955 Lincolns. Steve
  5. hddennis: To help you narrow down what the mounting bracket might fit, here are some links to the discussion of dual ignition coils which were used by the 1933 and 1934 Packard Eights and Super Eights: Re: What modell used this coil base? [Pre-War (1899-1942)] - Packard Motor Car Information (packardinfo.com) The Packard 12 and a number of other luxury makes used dual ignition coils during the period, a question Owen Dyneto answered here: Re: Why dual ignition coils? [Pre-War (1899-1942)] - Packard Motor Car Information (packardinfo.com) Hope this helps. Steve
  6. A set of Houk wire wheels would spruce the Buick right up...anyone got a set laying around?
  7. Is it a Glenn Pray Auburn Speedster or one of his bodies on a genuine Auburn chassis?
  8. Congratulations! You went for maximum Auburn and got it! Color all the rest of us green with envy! Get used to being the center of attention wherever you drive in it. Young Gordon Buehrig had a very good day at his drawing board when he designed these late Speedsters incorporating the cowl and passenger compartment from the leftover 1933 speedster body from Union City Body Company inventory.
  9. John: My observation of later 1960's Cadillac 60 Specials and Fleetwood Broughams interior wood trim was it was seriously downgraded in quality after the magnificent 1966 model year. Steve

  19. These are two of the four Briggs Manufacturing Co. rear-engine prototypes designed by John Tjaarda that led to the Lincoln-Zephyr. The upper image is the functional prototype No. 4, the lower image is the wooden mock-up prototype No. 1 that was shown to the public at the 1933-'34 Century of Progress in Chicago.
  20. Doubtful it was a real car, more likely a mock-up prop on some ordinary chassis the studio ginned-up for only this movie.
  21. This '56 Packard Caribbean convertible #276 is indeed the very last Packard convertible built. It appeared at the Packard Centennial in 1999 at Warren, Ohio where the Packard production began before moving to Detroit in 1903.
  22. Alfred Sloan and Nickolas Dreystadt held no illusions that the Cadillac Series 60 or 61 were cars anyone would ever consider to be Cadillac's best or a Classic, whatever definition that might denote. The primary purpose it fulfilled like an Olympic champion was to be a springboard year-by-year to return Cadillacs to the position of volume luxury segment sales leader and attendant profitability. The fact that they vanquished Packard's at one time dominance of the luxury segment was simply icing on the cake.
  23. The Standard Catalog of American Cars, 1946-1975, Edited by John Gunnell states 6,367 1963 Buick Electra 225 convertibles built.
  24. What is surprising about the all-new 1949 Mopar cars is how many have bodies that are unique to a single make and model like the bustle-back Dodge Wayfarer two-door sedan. Pre-war and post-war through the first-series 1949 Mopar cars were champions of body sharing and interchangeability over their complete product lines.
