  1. What we now regard as the ultimate sporting luxury interior feature, the four individual 'bucket' seats created with stationary center armrests, weren't as appreciated by the general public in the 1930's. It is curious that Cord owners wouldn't embrace such an exclusive feature. The idea of four bucket seat interiors would finally gain currency in the latter 1950's through the 1960's. But progressive designers such as Gordon Buehrig were leading the way.

  4. For 1926, the Elcar Eight-in-Line was the Model 8-81, 132"wb., 298 ci Lycoming 4H straight eight, all priced over $2,100 to $2,800, squarely versus the Packard Single Six. The concurrent Auburn had the Lycoming 4HM, whatever that variation denoted. Elcar hadn't competed in the entry-level premium/luxury price segment before the prior year 8-80, had generally been solid medium-priced market contender. The Standard Catalog, edited by Kimes and Clark list 1,336 cars as their total 1926 production. Given that model selection included the 4-55 priced ~$1,200-$1,400 and the 6-65 priced ~$1,300-$1,600, one might reasonably suppose that the 8-81 comprised the smallest percent of those 1,336 totals. This may not be the sole survivor of the model but darn close to it.
  5. That's not just any production 1937 Packard 120 convertible, it's the one-off convertible victoria. The late actor Edward Hermann had it restored and showed it at the 1999 Packard Centennial at Warren, Ohio. Of hand, I don't recall if the body was built by Dietrich (Murray) or LeBaron (Briggs). It looks the same as it did at the Centennial.

  10. These 148" wb Eights/120's were built to appeal to the livery market and as an adjunct to Henney-Packard professional cars for funeral/mourner's coaches. The hotel courtesy cars, livery coaches, stage-lines, railroad station/airport limousines segment was dominated by Mopar models, Packard developed these 'Junior' series seven passenger models to compete.

  13. The 1958-'60 Lincolns did not fare very well in the used car market. Consider the following comparing the three 1959 luxury two door hardtops as used cars in Spring 1963 and Summer 1965: Source: N.A.D.A Used Car Valuation Market Reports. Nameplate............Factory Price.......Retail 1963.....Retail 1965: Cadillac DeVille: ----$5,252---------$2,400--------$1,100 Lincoln Premiere: ---$5,347---------$1,600---------$785 Imperial Crown: -----$5,403---------$1,700---------$535 Whereas the Cadillac was still expensive enough to exclude many of the buyer who wouldn't have the resources to maintain the car in good condition, both Lincoln and Imperial were a "big. flashy, cheap rides" until something expensive needed repair or replacement. That $1,600-$1,700 range bought a two-year-old full-size Chevy-Ford-Plymouth mid-trim level two door with average mileage, or a large portion of the price of a new intermediate.

  15. Yes, largest unibody in their time: 131" wb, OAL: 229", ~5,000 lbs. It's a fascinating tale of the driving corporate motivations and personalities that brought these "misunderstood giants" to market. The basic idea was to "Out Cadillac, Cadillac in every way." reasoning if long, massive, extravagantly styled cars denoted the ultimate in American luxury, Lincoln would deliver it in spades.

  23. JamesR: Because K-F had a limited body style selection one way they chose to differentiate their cars was with paint colors and interior choices. The man who directed the color and trim department was Carleton Spencer, one of the industry's best. Deluxe model Kaisers and Frazers had some of the most luxurious and imaginative interiors in cars in their price range. The paint code on the date plate could be matched to one of the myriad combinations they offered. Listed in the Appendix E in the book, Kaiser-Frazer: The Last Onslaught on Detroit by Richard M. Langworth are literally hundreds of colors and trim combinations. Blues include those named Horizon, Peacock, Cerulean and the bamboo-style vinyl was named "Bleached Bambu Vinyl". The old "forklift" engine, as my late friend used to refer to it, wasn't exciting but the cars could look great in their elegant combinations. I recommend the book to anyone who wants to develop a better understanding of the company and the wider automotive industry at the time. Ironically, when the book was published in 1975, the next onslaught on Detroit was taking place, this time mounted from Japan. Steve
