  1. The Standard Catalog of American Cars, 1946-1975, edited by John Gunnell states for 1969 Dodge Polara and Monaco: "Three-speed manual transmission was standard on all models unless noted, with the three-speed TorqueFlite automatic and four-speed manual transmission optional." It appears to have no power brake booster and the power steering may be absent too.
  2. Essentially, that's exactly what happened. Once the S-P merger was complete, Packard president Jim Nance was calling the shots. He, just as many in the company, blamed styling for the sales failures of the 1953-'55 sedans which were created under the Loewy contract. That design contract was tremendously costly for Studebaker but would end in 1955; Nance had been developing an in-house design team at Packard. But, in the case of what to present for 1956, time was short, and the in-house teams were already loaded with development work for an all-new 1957 line. Vince Gardner, who had been in the Loewy group but had left to open his own design consultancy, was contracted to create the 1956 sedan and wagon styling. His mandate was to apply mainstream 'Detroit' idiom styling with a familial appearance to Packards and Clippers without changes to the existing central body tooling. The new front clip and rear quarters squared-up the prior sloping features plus revised trim patterns and color breaks succeeded in giving the cars a new look. Unhappily, the thick door frames and roof pillars which weren't to be changed, were decidedly out of fashion during the burgeoning hardtop trend that now included B-pillarless four door hardtops After the blockbuster 1955 industry-wide sales year, 1956 was somewhat off which was to be expected. Much more than their styling appeal, the steady drum beat of bad news being reported about Studebaker-Packard's financial condition discouraged many potential buyers from taking the chance on what might suddenly become an orphan car. In the current collector market, there is no serious demand for 1953-'58 Studebaker sedans and wagons, even examples in nice condition. At half the asking price, this car would still go begging.
  3. This is the first year of the rationalized Super Eight that shared bodies and chassis assemblies with the Junior series including the all-steel bodies that were introduced for the 1938 Six (nee 115) and Eight (nee 120). Developed to compete directly the Cadillac Series 60/61 ($1,765), priced at $1,732, the 1939 Super Eight can be thought of as the concurrent 120 fitted with the quality interiors of the predecessor Super Eights. For power, the 1939 Super Eights were equipped with a revised version of the 320 ci straight eight in production since the 1929 6th Series Standard Eights. The revisions were done to fit that engine into the somewhat limited engine compartment which renders this a one-year-only engine. It also has some inherent problems which if I recall correctly include casting flaws in the cylinder block. Postwar, as these 1939 320 ci engines wore out or developed troubles, Packard issued service bulletins to dealers detailing how to replace these engines with a postwar 327 ci service engine should customers want to continue driving their 1939 Super Eight. The 1940 Super Eight 160 and 180 received the all-new monobloc 356 ci straight eight, a completely different and pretty marvelous engine. This poor Packard realistically would be a hideously expensive restoration project, probably best a parts car for others.

  11. Apparent from the majority of Craigslist advertisers I find when searching for interesting old cars, there is a terrible lack of photographic skills rife in the general population. The simple act of framing the horizontal subject completely in the view finder is almost completely lacking. What's worse is holding the camera vertically when photographing the horizontal subject so the image comes out the size of a postage stamp. And they no doubt wonder why they get little or no response and no sale...

  16. Looking good, please show us more of how well it came up. How does it drive with the manual shift?
  17. Thanks Ed. Now, for those of us not well versed in European makes, what are makes are those?
  18. Consulting the book, The History of Hudson by Don Butler, only the 1939 Hudson 112 exhibited the older styling with headlight pods attached to the grille shell and heavy grille bars only. All other series 91, 92, 93, 95 and 97 had the headlight integrated into the front fender ends and fine horizontal grille bars plus side 'catwalk' grilles. How they varied the wheelbases was largely through longer front clip components, except for the two topline 129" wb Series 97 Custom Country Club Eight which have lengthened bodies. Addendum: the side grilles on the 112 below were optional trim accessories that could be purchased to dress-up one's 112.
  19. For Sale: 1952 Hudson Wasp 2dr club coupe - Project - $9,900 - MONTVALE, NJ 1952 Hudson Wasp / Hornet - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle... (craigslist.org) Seller's Description: Hello, how are you? Here you have the rare chance to buy a piece of American automotive history. If you want to stand out from the crowd, this is the right car. You don`t see those cars very often anymore. 1952 Hudson Wasp 2 door, matching numbers 262cui straight six with manual transmission.Clean NJ Title in my name. Car is registered in NJ and insured (Pictures show previous VT plates). This car is super solid. The undercarriage, trunk, floors are amazing and all original sheet metal. No patch panels. No bodywork whatsoever needed. Car runs and drives. Look how clean the engine bay is. You could also make this a Doc Hudson clone from the Disney movie “Cars”. Car comes with extra parts, shop manual, owner manual, indoor car cover. The car was from Jan 2016 till March 2017 in a restoration shop in CT. Believe it or not, but the previous owner spent over 28t dollars in the restauration. I have all the receipts to prove it.Work that was done includes:Engine bay detailed, new wiring harness, brakes, carb, fuel pump, fuel tank, starter, generator and radiator rebuilt, new sway bar bushings, new wipers, air cleaner, rad. hoses, heater hoses, tail pipe, wiring harness, fan belts, door rubbers, center steering arm and pivot, motor mounts, MC, glass, weatherstripping kit, tires, ignition parts, and the list goes on and on and on.The Hudson can be driven as is, however the restoration was never completed. What it needs to be 100% is a new carpet ($395), interior panels ($680. Interior panels are there but are in rough shape) and some of the trim reinstalled. Since it wasn’t driven very often in the last years, a good tune up is recommended as well. I have pictures and videos of the car I can send. I`m selling the Wasp to fund my 1970 Mopar project and honestly, I am having difficulties driving the manual transmission. Before sending unreasonable offers, please consider that this is a complete, running and driving, solid 50s 2dr car. If you find a cheaper one, buy it. 20. According to the text American Funeral Cars and Ambulances Since 1900 by Thomas A. McPherson, it started life as a 1930 Superior-Studebaker Buckingham funeral coach, 156" wheelbase on the commercial President chassis. The factory price was $3,975.00.
