  1. The factory two-tone color break for the 1957 Lincoln was second color top only. More than one has a version done to it seen here...and it just looks bad...
  2. Hi Thanks, your car is 364 from the end, sometime in the last six weeks of production. A worthwhile restoration project of a great car. Steve
  3. Bringing that muddy motorist out of the sepia fog:
  4. Some have corrected the battering ram look by tucking the bumpers closer to the body on otherwise stock-appearing 1970's cars. It vastly improves their design appeal.
  5. It was the slanted, cat's-eye design they built for 1960-'61.
  6. For Sale: 1959 Edsel Ranger 2dr Sedan, 6 cyl. manual shift - $9,000 - Clinton, MO 1959 Edsel Ranger - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle automotive sale (craigslist.org) Seller's Description: This car has been partially refurbished. Engine has been cleaned with new water pump and refurbished harmonic balancer. It is in running condition. Manual transmission is 3 on the tree. 7. Industrial espionage among car companies to get a glimpse of the next new styling the competition was developing was a cottage industry around Detroit in those days.
  8. For Sale: 1965 Chevrolet Corvair Monza 4dr Hardtop, 4-speed manual - $8,700 - Prairie City, IA 1965 Chevrolet Corvair Monza - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle... (craigslist.org) Seller's Description: Beautiful 4-door hardtop Corvair. This car runs and drives well. I just drove it to the Goodguy's car show, so if you saw one of these in the Car Corral there, this is the one. It's a 4-speed manual transmission. It has a rebuilt starter, a fresh oil change, and newer drive belt. Car comes with an extra spare, numerous books & factory manuals, the original owner's manual, and a well-used cover. I also have a few other parts I planned on replacing, but it runs well enough I haven't felt the need yet. These include new spark plugs, plug wires and an extra drive belt, among other things. Parts are readily available and reasonably inexpensive. (I like Clark's Corvair and Rock Auto for parts) This car is not perfect by any means, but it is a really clean original example. The mileage is not listed on the title. The odometer reads a little under 70,000 miles, so it's either approximately 70k or if it's rolled over, 170k. By the condition of the car itself, I'm inclined to think that it's 70k, but I'll let you make up your own mind. The only things needed for this to be really reliable are tires and brakes. I have all the brake parts, and I will be ordering new tires soon. The asking price is $8700 or best offer. If you buy the car before I get the brakes and tires replaced, I'll include the brake parts and you'll get a $750 discount. I'm really looking for cash more than trades (unless it's silver or gold), but I'm open to hearing what you have. Worst I can say is no thank you.Don't be bashful if you have questions! I am not always able to talk and do not have voicemail set up on my phone, so I prefer texts or emails. If you prefer to chat on the phone, that's fine, but it may take a couple of tries. Please be patient or send me a message with your phone number and when you're available to chat, and I'll try to give you a call. Thanks, and have a great day! 11. For Sale: 1970 Cadillac Eldorado, 53K miles - $7,000 - Eau Claire, WI 1970 Cadillac Eldorado - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle... (craigslist.org) Seller's Description: 53000 original miles with numbers matching 8.2 liter 400 hp engine! Runs and drives excellent. New paint a couple years ago however they could have done a better job. No smoke and was told engine was overhauled by a previous owner but no paperwork. Telltale signs as engine has been painted and a bore scope check shows a different from factory piston, perhaps to lower compression a bit to run on modern gas. Not everything works but I’d drive it anywhere! 12. I sure do wish they would have photographed the serial number plate, the last Packard built June 25, 1956 at the Connor Avenue plant was a solid dark blue Patrician sedan 5682-4775. It was shipped to the Atlanta, Georgia distributor.
  13. The " painted mustache bar atop the grille, right below the DODGE letters." may be because while the sheet metal stampings are the same as the American production Plymouth, the 1951 Dodge-style grille had to be accommodated to create the Canadian production Dodge Kingsway. Checking a 1951 Dodge Kingsway sales literature would confirm what the proper finish should be. "Plodges" have a variety of unique components being something of a mix 'n match for the Canadian market.
  14. All those accessories were either factory or dealer installed. For the latter, they were an additional source of income. Iirc, that ivory knob is the location for the overdrive control. The straight eight has a water distribution tube that runs the length of the block which can get clogged, has to be pulled out and cleaned. Cooling systems in any car of this age likely need a thorough flushing if the engine hasn't been properly rebuilt. The 'Free-Flow-Styled' Packards are popular with members of both major Packard clubs, well supported with parts suppliers and service advice. One of the best, most active Packard Forums is www.packardinfo.com where you can sign-on for free and get any and all questions answered plus search prior discussions of common issues. The folks in our PAC regions praise the torque and power of the 327 especially equipped with overdrive and the famous "Boulevard Ride" Packard was known for. Build quality was very high as was upholstery and trim. Styling, admittedly subjective, is something one can warm to once the intrinsic qualities are experienced. The 1948-'50 22nd and 23rd Series Packards were high production years, have a decent survival rate now, making availability of cars plentiful and prices relatively reasonable.
  15. Yes, that was the marketing plan. But as the Edsel name became increasingly associated with failure, Lincoln-Mercury Division sales management decided to quietly drop the Edsel name, simply promote their new 'upscale' compact car as Comet. For 1960 and 1961 the cars are titled as only "Comet", not as "Mercury Comet" which they became for 1962 when the intermediate-sized Mercury Meteor briefly joined the line-up. Here is a postcard image of S & R Motors, Rockville Center, NY taken during the 1960 model year. Note the prominent "Comet" neon signage.
  16. JamesR: According to The Standard Catalog of American Cars, 1946-1975, Edited by John Gunnell, formal 'blind' quarters coupes were the most popular with '66 Thunderbird buyers: 63A 2dr hardtop coupe: 13,389: painted or vinyl top, quarter windows. 63B 2dr hardtop Town Coupe: 15,633: painted or vinyl top, Thunderbird emblem. 63D 2dr hardtop Landau Coupe: 35,105: vinyl top, landau bars. 76A 2dr convertible: 5,049 The majority of survivors are the Town Coupe and Landau, at least by unscientific searches over the last few years. One or two of the quarter window hardtop coupes might have turned up but none were in good enough condition to repost the advertisement here. Thunderbird convertible sales had been on the wane since almost !2K were sold for 1960, generally diminishing annually thereafter. Steve

According to the book Canadian Cars, 1946-1984 by R. Perry Zavitz, page 107: "... names were used by the Canadian-type Dodges beginning with the 1951 models. A deluxe Suburban was a new model in the 1951 range, and it was called the Savoy, like the similar Plymouth model. The Kingsway name was revived for use on the business coupe and compact two-door sedan."

(craigslist.org) Seller's Description: 1962 Mercury Comet, 43k original miles, 144 six-cylinder. It has a manual three speed transmission also known as three on the tree. It needs a few things the radio doesn’t work which I believe is the antenna wire.passenger side front blinker doesn’t work the bulb is loose and the fuel sending unit doesn’t work which is never an issue because the little car doesn’t use much gas. I had the following done by mechanic. Things you would expect. New tires. Rear shocks. New drive shaft pinion seal and fluid. Tune up kit plugs/ wires / cap / points. Brand new OEM Holley 1 barrel carb. New fuel pump with filters. New cooling hoses and radiator flush. Fresh oil change. Little car runs like a champ. It has scratches on it and small imperfections, but it is 60 years old. I’ve owned this car for a few years purchased from original owner it’s been a lot of fun going to car shows it’s not perfect But it always draws a lot of attention and smiles. If you’re looking for a fun low-cost classic car, this is it. The car spent most of his life in Minnesota and was brought to Michigan in the early 80s. 23. Here's everything you want to know about Meteor: Meteor Motor Car., Meteor chassis, Piqua, Maurice Wolfe, Meteor Hearse, Meteor Ambulance, Cadillac, LaSalle, Pontiac, REO, A.J. Miller - CoachBuilt.com As professional car coachbuilders (hearses and ambulances), many in the first decades of the transition from horse drawn to motorized livery ventured into building their own chassis assembled from the myriad propriety supplier components to fit their specific purposes. While long commercial chassis were available directly from automakers, companies such as Meteor found it cost advantageous to assemble their own chassis.
  24. John: Its anecdotal from seeing the cars at shows, car corrals and in junkyards but the walnut door friezes in the 1966 Cadillac 60 Specials and Fleetwood Broughams were thick, having enough material to refinish if they became water stained or sunlight damaged. Beginning with the 1967 model year, the wood veneer was a thin sheet bonded to a backing. When these became wet, the veneer peeled from the top downward as seen on this otherwise fine 1969 model. A car caught in one drenching rain with the windows down was enough to start the process. The same problem beset the 1961-'63 Lincolns that had the walnut interior trim option. Steve
