Factory sunroof on '72 Electra

Does anyone own a '72 Electra having a factory installed sliding sunroof? The factory 1972 literature and manuals are very vague about which '72 Electras could be ordered with the sunroof option. One 1972 sales brochure I own shows a photo of a sunroof-equipped 2-dr hardtop, but does not mention any 4-dr Electra models. I'm also wondering at what point during the 1972 model year that this sunroof became a factory option?

According to the '72 Final Production, the sun roof was avaialable in the A-body only. Now in '73 that's another story! Electric or Manual in Century, Regal, LeSabre, Electra, Riviera, only 2 doors. I have the production numbers if interested.

I DO NOT SEE IT (SUNROOF OPTION) LISTED IN THE STANDARD CATALOG AS AN OPTION. IT MUST BE REALLY RARE BUT AT LEAST THERE WERE SOME 80,000 LIMITEDS MADE THAT YEAR. I SUSPECT THAT IF BUICK MADE LIMITEDS WITH THIS OPTION, THAT THEY BUILT SEVERAL AT A TIME SINCE THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS AT THAT TIME WOULD HAVE BEEN LABOR INTENSIVE. FIND SOME, AND I AM SURE SEVERAL VINS WILL FOLLOW (CLOSE BATCHING). THIS IS AN OPTION ASSOCIATED WITH 'SPORT' SO I WOULD DOUBT THAT ANY 4 DOOR MODELS HAD THIS OPTION AND I AM NOT SURE A FOUR DOOR ORDER SLIP WITH THIS OPTION WOULD HAVE BEEN HONORED BY THE FACTORY.

I asked a BCA friend of mine who is a 72 B & C body Guru, he is aware of the picture you refer to, but has been documenting 72's for probably three decades and has never documented a 72 B or C with a sunroof which would go along with Roberta's findings. Also his original 72 B & C Body order forms have no place to check to order a sunroof. Just a bit more info.

Hi, The sunroof was available on Riviera's also in 72. I have one on my 72 and 73. Chris Wolfe's book " Buick Riviera 1963-73" also has a picture of a 72 with a sunroof. Kevin

Wow! This is all interesting!

I'll have to take a close look at the photograph of the car on the sales brochure to see if the sunroof was airbrushed-in on a photo of a non-sunroof Electra. If the photo of the '72 Electra 2-dr with sunroof is actually legitimate, then BMD apparently made at least one of these cars.

Is the brochure you're referring to the small folder that shows a gold Skylark, silver Riviera, and a brown Electra? I've seen that folder. The Electra also has wire wheel covers that I've never seen on an Electra. I also agree that no 72 Electras were made with the sunroof. I'll check the Ward's Yearbook for production figures of the sunroof option. I have seen many 72 Electras in the LA area wrecking yards, but never saw one with a sunroof. I did see one 73 Electra coupe with one. The car was blue, with a white vinyl top. My 73 dealer literature shows that the Buick chrome wheels were a SCO special order on Electras for the first time in 73. How about the Max Trac option? Have many list members seen them on Electras?

The pictures in the brochures were usually printed months before the cars actually debuted, there are many that do not depict the cars as they actually ende up being produced. I think there was some touch up and air brushing done too. like I said before my info shows nothing but Skylarks in '72 and is actual production data from Buick, now that doesn't mean that some big shot didn't have one installed at the factory <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

My 72 Buick Price Directory, the price and option book issued to the Buick salesmen, shows option Z8, Sun Roof, Electrically operated as only applying to Riviera only at the GM bargain price of only $589.00! Wards Yearbook shows no big Buicks built with sunroofs, and 3.5% of 72 Riviera's built with them (approx. 1180 cars). The Ward's Yearbook for 73 shows .2% of big Buicks built with sunroofs (approx. 911 cars), while Rivs still were at 3.5% in 73, same as 72. Looks to be a very rare option on the 73's.

I just received the word that 72BuickGuy has asked the Sloan Museum to check the 1972 Electra 225 Daily Reports regarding the sunroofs. The Sloan's data shows that one (1) '72 225 4-door hardtop was built with the sunroof, and one hundred twelve (112) '72 225 2-door hardtops were built with sunroof. So, it appears that some cars were, in fact, equipped with this option. Carl, feel free to elaborate if you have more information on the subject.

None of us has evidently seen any '72 225's with the option, but the production figures above are miniscule relative to total '72 Electra production.

Saw this old thread, the one 1972 4 door that was produced with a sunroof became the Limited II show car.  From what I can gather, the sunroof was only available as an option on the coupes later in the year of the 72 run, and not available to public on the 4 door.  It can been seen in the black and white shot.

Two different models Barney.  Check out the seat measurements.

Of course the thing I think is great is the color of the car! Sierra Tan, with a full vinyl top!  I can't remember if part vinyl tops were in fashion in 72 or did that happen in 73 when they had the fixed rear side glass option.  Looks like some sort of wild pattern to the carpets too.

In the black and white photo, the model with the blonde hair is standing by the right front fender.

I have the actual color photo that appears above as well as the black and white one. The car actually has a lot of goldmetallic in it, it appears to be a derivative of Sierra ran with a twist.  It is also a custom vinyl roof.  The interior is a much milder version of the wild GS that was also on the circuit, here is the Suncoupe
