Just make sure its on tight, or you'll risk damaging the splines for when the real handle is reinstalled.

You bet. The car is hardly driven and I've been sidetracked from my project. The vice grips are just for egress when I'm working on my interior.

It could be early 40s due to the age of the body, or late 30s.  As a hint, I got the pic from a post about the Dust Bowl Okies.  John, brillant deduction on naming it as a Chevrolet!  Not many Chevies of that age around anymore.
