What was the official name of these front shields from carriage and horseless carriage era?

These were on the front of many horsedrawn and horseless carriages from the early days. These frames would have been covered in canvas or leather type material. Anyone know exactly what they were called or just shields? I doubt if anyone would know what year and model these two came off of. Appreciate any info.

Yes rocketraider, the issue on carriages was usually more liquid!

Think of a Curved Dash Oldsmobile which, while technically not needing a dash panel, is probably the best way for old-car people to envision one.

Horse-drawn buggies, coaches et al  needed such a panel to deflect dust, mud, road apples etc  from the driver's feet and clothing.

And when an equine has to go, it's gonna go! Hence the need for a "dash" at the front of a carriage or coach.

Imagine the lot of a stableboy or footman charged with keeping the carriage clean.

Flying horse poop and pee splatter protection shield...

While yes cars have dashes, the firewall replaces the dash on a carriage in function. Only now it is grease, dirt, oil and fumes. :)

The term dash board was initially referred to as the board placed on front of a wagon/buggy to protect the wagonman from being dashed to death by rocks thrown up by the horses heels during a galloping run. I doubt road apples ever got tossed that high, but makes a good story. There was really no reason for them on early 4 wheelers that travelled at 5 or 10 MPH, but they showed up early on some cars, and the term dashboard carried forward. Interesting how the industry eventually went to cowl or firewall, but still continued to refer to inside instrument panel area as a "dash" and "dashboard".

Interestingly, Ford called the Model A (and maybe other models) firewall, the "dash".
