Molded floor mat alternatives

WPVT

Recommended Posts

Molded rubber floor mats are no longer available for my 1954 Dodge C-1 pickup. There is a transmission hump, so flat matting won't lay very well. I am considering using a brush on bed liner such as Durabak on the hump and maybe firewall, and then flat floor mats for the driver and passenger feet areas. I'm a little hesitant, since the stuff sounds impossible to remove once it's on.

Does anyone have any thoughts or experience along this line ? Could vinyl be heat molded in place ?

"Vinyl" is actually a compound, and the formulations used for different applications are dissimilar.  Matting formulae are made to drape and lie flat, but will have poor draw for forming.  Thermoforming intended material will have a material (such as ABS) added to allow it it stretch and then set on cooling.  These are the kind of material used in dash board skins.  The two could be bonded with a solvent like MEK.

Maybe you can find a mat from a similar year Ford or Chevy that you could make fit?  Also, my 1995 Ford pickup had a vinyl floor mat as it was a plain Jane truck, maybe one of them could be cut down?  A salvage yard might have some late model trucks to investigate.

I would be looking around at what other trucks had a similar sized transmission tunnel and then ordering a carpet set for that - most carpet sets are trimmed extra large so are most adaptable.  You would probably just ask for no trimming.

Also, A good upholsterer can custom sew up carpets too (even with a hump).

My last sets came from here:

I found a molded rubber floor mat including the jute like underliner for my 64 D100 somewhere using a google search.

It is a heavy rubber mat that has the hump molded in. Not an exact fit but a good quality mat. Might be that it was a universal fit thing.

It was trim to fit and needed some adjustment with the heat gun. But I am happy with it.

I for the life of me cant remember the name of the place that I got it.
