1967 Chevrolet Impala Convertible

Recommended Posts

I need to get rid of this car. I ordinarily wouldn't have it in my inventory, but the guy sent me photos of a car that looked much nicer and I agreed to take it on. When it arrived, I wasn't thrilled but he'd driven 5 hours to get it to me and, well, i guess I'm kind of a softie and agreed to help the guy out. So here it is. It's not really a bad car, but there are finger-sized holes in all four fenders behind the wheels, which is the main issue. Remarkably, however, those holes do not indicate that this car is rusty, because the rockers, the fenders other than the holes, and all the other areas that matter are quite solid (check out the ultra-clean doors!). I don't rightly know how it rusted the way it did, but it's a solid car that doesn't look solid and that scares everyone away. The paint is decent and could be better with a professional cut and buff, and the doors close well so the frame is solid with no sagging. Nice interior also in turquoise, and this is the car's original combination. I'm not quite ready to say it's original, but it might be--the door panels certainly are. The carpets are definitely newer and there's a decent aftermarket stereo that sounds pretty good. The power top is new and works well and all the gauges work. The steering wheel has some cracks, but they're not particularly tough to find for these cars. The trunk was just competently refinished with black carpet and the floor underneath is solid. The 327 cubic inch V8 was rebuilt two years ago and runs great on an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor. There's also a new aluminum radiator, new alternator, fresh belts and hoses, and other maintenance parts. It's not beautifully detailed but it works. The 2-speed PowerGlide automatic was also rebuilt and shifts well and the car rides and handles rather well on the road. Nice burble from the exhaust and traditional Rally wheels with blackwall radials.

Price is $17,900, which I think is a reasonable price for a big Imp ragtop like this, but I'm open to offers in that neighborhood. The rust isn't even noticeable from 5 feet away (these are the only photos I have for the moment, but if you want to see more I can go get more) and it's really the only downside to the car. if you're a little bit handy, you can patch those areas, repaint it below the side trim, and the problem is solved and you've added a bunch of value. With those spots fixed and a bit of clean-up in the engine bay, I think it's a $25,000 car. We thought about doing the work ourselves, but my resources are stretched thin right now so I just need it gone. Thanks for looking!

I know this won't help with the sale of your car and hope you don't mind this but my cousin owned this 1967 Chevrolet convertible in 1973 for his everyday transportation back then. Always thought it was a great looking and driving car with it's 327 powerglide transmission. His had the bucket seats vs yours with the bench seat and his shifter was on the console. It looks to be a different model as to the side moldings and absence of fenders skirts but love the sleek lines.

If I wasn't thick with '58 Buick's your car would be a definite consideration.

Good luck with the sale.

ignorant question from a non-Chevy guy:  Which models had the side trim at the height of the rear wheel arch like this car, and which had none there but a strip at the bottom of the rocker?

I honestly don't know. My first guess is that it's an SS vs. non-SS thing (this particular convertible is NOT an SS). My other thought is that perhaps it was some decor package that was optional. Hopefully someone with some expertise will chime in.

All of the SS Impala models had the different trim to distinguish them from the  Impala. As the sportier version, less chrome, more matte black background with with white letter SS emblems are exterior differences.

Bucket seats not available in regular Impalas, but only SS version, and  in Caprice models. No Caprice convertibles in 67

The convertible in Dei's black and white photo is an SS model. The for-sale turquoise car is a regular Impala. The side trim was located along the bottom rockers on all Super Sport models, including the SS 427, (which was top of the line). Non-SS models had that wider trim higher up the side.

Love the coke-bottle fender design on these cars.

I learned to drive in my parents' 67 Impala convertible, and dated the pretty girl who became my wife in it for years. While I was in high school a buddy bought a used 67 Impala SS 427, and I rode in it with him to lunch every day. Later he traded it in, and it ended up in a local junkyard, where I found it and removed the "427" emblems for my teenage collection. Still have them today.

Just one interesting note on the 67 SS model. GM offered a bench seat option with strato backs on the 67 SS models. When ordered the SS car did not have a center console and the shifter was on the column. Had one of these, a 396. Picture of the car attached. Don't have any interior pics.67chevloaded.thumb.jpg.1a1f98ed07814626f1ce326c87156fe7.jpg
