TerryB
Did you collect these Sunoco car coins in the late 1960s? I have way more of them than I need. There were two sets, series one and series two. Here are series two coins. Would be willing to part with some if anyone is interested. They are aluminum not silver so no big $$ here.
mercer09
believe I have a brass or copper set? also not worth big money- but the concept was way cool in the day!
carbking
If I remember correctly (could look, but lazy), there is a bronze set of both series 1 and 2. The aluminum coins were handed out at the station, and when one got a complete set of the aluminum ones, they could be redeemed for a complete bronze set. EDIT: forgot I have these on my website. Follow this link, and scroll down to Sunoco: http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/AutomobilecardsUSA.htm Jon. John_S_in_Penna
Just as car fans defend the proper definitions of their hobby's terms, such as "classic" and "original," so too does the coin collecting hobby. These are not actual "coins." Coins have denominations and are used for money, almost always by some issuing national government. I don't think they are tokens either, since tokens are usually exchanged for some good or service. These aluminum items might be described, I suppose, as "medalets," or small medals. But they're an interesting topic, Terry, so thanks for bringing them to the forum. I've already learned from others who have posted information. BucketofBolts
As a kid in the 1960s I had a great Uncle in Greenville SC that had one of these filling stations. I collected almost all those coins. I still think that my collection may be in my father's family home's attic, which my brother inherited and still lives today. Before my memory lapses I will have to make a trip one day to that attic to retrieve my collection.

Series one coins or tokens have smooth outer edge, series two have the serrated edge like US dimes and quarters making them more coin like. I will be happy to exchange my extra coins/tokens for US $0.25 each for anyone who would like to start or add to their collection. I also have some Esso dollars but we’ll save them for another discussion!
