1931 Buick Series 95 flywheel teeth problem

Who would have thought that this car is less than 10 miles from my house.   Under 15,000 miles.  The owner is having issues with the starter gear and the flywheel gear.  Can anyone tell me if there is a ring gear that can be installed on these straight 8 flywheels, or if it is like my 1925 where the gears are cut into the outer surface of the flywheel.  I will probably help him fix this, just to go for a drive in this one.     Hugh

With a removable gear it is possible heat the gear, remove it and either shift is slightly CW or CCW or reverse it if both sides are beveled and reinstall.  I would check closely, maybe the starter drive gear is the only one messed up.

I have had this persons business card in my rolodex for ever.  I have never used him but you might give him a try.  The card says Al Suehring, flywheel ring gears, 1000s in stock, 715 677 3809,   10058 Krogwold Rd., Amherst Jct. Wi 54407.

Motor Spec's catalogue of 1934 lists flywheel gears for 1931 8-60,80,90 as being the same, 123-SBF. Same as 1929-30 Std. 6, 116, Master 6, 121, 123, 129.

It also lists Flywheel gears for 1924-25 Master 6 (same as 1916-17 D-44 & D-45) and 1924-25 Std 6 (118-F) and 1925-28 Std 6 (118-SBF). The drawings indicate they are ring gears rather than whole flywheel.

Thanks for all the information.  Really interesting to see that there is a replacement for the 1925 cars because the ring gear on these cars is teeth cut into the outer edge of the flywheel.  Certainly the fix would be to put the flywheel in a lathe and cut a groove for a ring gear.
