On The Road Again!?

Anyone into HO (or other) scale trains?  I certainly was when I was a youngster, & still am, actually.  For many years, I had this train table set up, but had to take it down a few years ago for some basement renovations.  Maybe someday I will get it back up & running!  Meantime, what catches your spying-eye radar?

Since my boss 1st agreed to revisit the possibility of me working remotely, starting January 2017, he has since said my next work computer will be a laptop & suggested ways to handle work flow with me on the road.  So, I am hoping a major, working road trip actually happens in 2017.  That in mind, I started a ROUGH, general overview of a potential route.  Given so many variables (i.e. people to see, who I can stay with for a day or 2, needing to return to IL every so often, weather, timing, etc.), I will figure out specifics (dates, times, actual path, etc.) later.  The outline below includes places I have stops for visits &/or 1-2 days to stay; some areas can be switched around, too (for instance, could stop in Cincinnati en route to FL).  Let me know if you would like to meet up in 2017!

This kind of trip is why I bought my Trailmanor folding camper. Roomy (about 170 sq ft open), has everything including computer station, and light enough to be towed easily by my V6 Jeep. Makes for a nice base when travelling and only needs some room next to friends garage (or in the street, or at a WallyWorld). Fully self contained even to the A/C.

ps have had HO, S, O27, O, standard gauge, & Little Tykes. Not recently though. Did notice some of the cast of Cars II.

Never had trains but did get an electric race car set in 1963. It was a Marx International racing set with two cars.  This is a larger car setup, 1/32 I believe.  Two cars came with it, a Lister Jaguar and an Aston Martin.  All these years later I still have the entire set in the orig box.  Track is in rough shape from corrosion but cars have held up well.  Had them out of the box recently for a toy show and tell at the local senior center.  With some tinkering they might still run.

A few others have suggested I invest in a camper of some sort, but I don't have the funds for that right now. :(

Sounds like you ran the table on the gauges ... awesome!

My brother did HO - both cars and trains. I went the N-gauge route and still hope to set 'em up again someday.

Cool.  I've thought about getting an N-gauge set, too, but ... that will have to wait a bit.

They sure look like they'd still run, Terry ... holy cow they look great!  A friend of mine has a Marx Intl racing set, too, tho I'm not sure what year.  He hasn't had it out of the box in about 20 years, tho.

Since posting this, I have added a few stops & made some timeline adjustments; HOWEVER, some health issues may derail my plans.  I should know by the end of 2016 whether or not I will be on the road in 2017 (health wise & boss approval).

As if my congenital heart issues were not enough:
* recent test results confirm my cholesterol is too high, & I am now in Stage 3 Kidney Disease.
* 2nd of 4 follow-up CT scans to monitor the speck on my lung is set for 12/27/2016.

My next cardiologist checkup (along with other specialists, including a nephrologist) is set for 05/11/2017, but I found out recently Medicaid insurance may not cover those appointments. Times like these, I just remind myself the Chicago Cubs are the 2016 World Series Champions.

In case I do not have time to visit the next couple weeks (what with the 2 Holiday weekends), MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR!  With any luck, I will post a potential major road trip route for 2017 soon?

Forgot the Bachmann N gauge set I had in the 80's, also had a really well detailed steam engine (2-8-4 ?) that came from somewhere in the orient accurate down to the valve gear.

Travel is good but south in winter, north in summer is better. Personally, I like resorts.

Awesome, Larry ... will do ... would be good to meet you!  Not sure yet when I'll be in Okemos, but I will post when I plan to be there.  Course, I probably will come back to MI when it gets a bit warmer, too ... ha.

HA ... resorts are cool. ;)

As for south in winter, north in summer ... that's generally my plan ... with the exception of MI, where I need to be in Okemos for a friend to follow-up on some dental work I need.

I have an 11 X 17 foot room filled with a walk into HO layout that I need to get back to at some point. They are never really finished but mine only got to a point it ran fairly well and the landscaping was only just touched on. Then....

I acquired a Garden scale set from a fellow 1953 Buick car owner (did not become a member) I knew, sadly after he passed away quietly and his wife knew I dreamed about a backyard set up. It still is in boxes but the flat car holds a model of a '58 Buick Roadmaster Convertible. Then.......

Me and three others purchased this with big ideas right before 2008 hit.....

Moving RR - May 1, 2005 - pic1.JPG

It is a 3 foot narrow gauge gas engine, friction drive to sprockets using chains to the drive wheels. Near as can figure built between 1918 to 1926. Everything turns but is not running or track laid....

A project for retirement?

Posting this the very last day of 2016....

HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!:D

Came across some of my G Scale stuff in a box at home yesterday.

Dad built the steam engine (wood) and case for my son when he was about 70 in his wood work shop.

That's cool, Doug!!!  Really like that car & car hauler. ;)

& yes, I'd say that's a project for retirement ... wow!

My entry into this scale is late and somewhat on a learning curve so you my be entirely right Larry.

I do know the caboose seems a bit larger in proportion than most of the other cars I have so....

I have everything still in boxes other than what you see till...... my Special gets back on the road again first. (priorities)

So you like HO trains?  How about the real stuff?  When you get to Michigan this summer you'll need to visit Durand and Owosso (no that far off the track to Okemos).  Why?  Durand was a huge railroad hub in it's day and has a gorgeous railroad station along with the State Railroad History Museum (http://www.durandstation.org/).  Next is Owosso, home of the Steam Railroading Institute (https://www.michigansteamtrain.com/) which has a nice collection of steam era trains, a roundhouse, turntable and run excursions at various times of the year along with weekend events. It is home to the 1225 which is the steam train that was digitized to make the Polar Express movie, along with a number of the recorded sounds. It also has a nice model train layout.  Depending when you are here I would be happy to put you up.

Actually went to both Owosso and Durand after an early morning Model Train Swap meet east of Flint all in one day. Next time will not try to cram quite so much in and take the steam train ride.

Still, a very nice effort to preserve this once grand way of life.
