  1. AJ, I sure love those open Cords and it is really cool yours has been in the family for such a long run. Did your dad restore it years ago or is it "as he bought it"?
  2. My wheels would be turning trying to find a way to keep the Studebaker and grab the A. That era and design of Studebakers is iconic to me and is truly my pick of all three vehicles. Sorry for being no help in your question, this is the downside to posting this kind of stuff publicly, and grabbing an A is something you can do at any time. They are plentiful. Relative to your question......should you do this..........I sense from your posts that you are excited about this trade and want to make it happen, so I would say go for it.
  3. My favorite post of this thread. I think you speak for a lot of us.
  4. We may never know, but it is a “buyer beware”. the hood scoop in the bonnet gives you pause wondering what is really going on with the car. that is so cheap, that my first reaction is “scam”, but I’m not so sure......as AJ says, if it is problematic, it isn’t a deal at 8500 unless parts are worth that and stripped off. These aren’t traditional body on frame or even the familiar type of monocoque..... think of an erector set because the cage that makes up the front end is atypical and more critical than a new Jaguar buyer might appreciate. the saying “there is nothing more expensive than a cheap...........” certainly applies to etypes. a decent #3 driver 70 roadster can be had for 75K....... a bad engine, rusty, trashed interior, with structural problems can’t be made right for 75K even if it is given to you for free........ but it doesn’t keep people from dreaming and trying. if anybody learns what happens to this, post and let us know. I have had one, so I am always interested in following them.
  5. A nice opportunity for someone who might want to take their first experience with a CCCA classic. I would expect this car can tour at 60mph and it is attractive. To get into this for around 20 seems like it should find a buyer. I was looking for something like this a few years ago and this would have had my attention. There seems to be so much interesting stuff in SoCal. I bought a car a couple months ago that was 10 miles from this one. That dry warm climate brings a lot of good elements together that are “kind” to these older cars if they lived their life out there.
  6. Looks like a fun well planned event at reasonable cost. I hope those who attend share some pics and details.
  7. Now We're talking! Bring that big beast out into the public and tell us the story of the car and how it found its way home with you.
  8. Jeff, your beautiful cars and tidy garage are inspirational to me!
  9. With Super charged and long WB, he didn't go for the "base Model". I searched the facebook post (the name of the poster) of this car and paired it with everything that came to mind (EL Cord, Cord, etc....and nothing hit). I did learn quite a bit about EL Cord's grandchildren.
  10. I believe Leroy Brown was frequently seen in one of these on the "south side of Chicago" in what was understood to be "the baddest part of town".
  11. I agree it looks like a good deal for the money, assuming it runs. A similar car is trying to be sold that also looks nice but has a thrown rod and I don’t think they can get $7,000 for it. My point of saying that is once it’s verified that this car runs, I think it’s a steal at that price. The other reality is so many cars are listed at a price that they will never sell for, and it gives people a false sense of what Price these cars change hands. Lots of this prewar stuff sells for 50% of the asking price once contact is made. I like it.
  12. Thanks Keith. Good words of wisdom from you that resonates with me.
  13. With the longer wheelbase, the supercharger, it runs, and maybe even paint that could be cleaned up and left as is for a driver.......... this car has a lot going for it at the asking price. There aren’t any great pictures of the interior but you get a hint from one photo and it isn’t encouraging. I wish years ago I had had the foresight to learn to do upholstery and car interiors instead of focusing so much of my time on watching March madness and wondering what I might eat for my next meal. somebody on here grab this car.
  14. Jealous of that SW weather. 4 inches of snow since this morning and still falling in northern Illinois.
  15. Frank, it looks like you are living the Good Life!
  16. I like Buicks of this era. They seem to have a lot of quality relative to their price point.
  17. I agree, it’s not as rare as that Berline we were talking about a few years ago, but still very cool, and super charged. I hope someone on here grabs it.
  18. They didn't make many of these, Normal wb for 37 Cord was 125 inches and the custom Beverly was 132 inches. It seems like there were something like 100 custom Beverly's and 20 custom Berlines (135 WB), but I don't remember exactly. Supercharged, an interesting car. This reminds me of a rough Custom Berline that was listed here a few years ago. It has the 8 louvers (vice 7 on the standard). Pictures are poor. The fact that it is supercharged, long WB and says it runs makes me think this car will sell if someone serious engages the owner and he has some wiggle room on price. Just passing along, I don't know the car or owner. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1375084116712283/
  19. I thought I recognized those gauges. Enjoy. That blue sky looks fabulous. Hopefully temps warm up during the day for touring.
  20. give us a few more details.......I've done some SOCAL and Arizona driving that looks like that......I trust you kept it under 15. Where are you?
  21. Great information. Good to hear the Stanley museum is a helpful group. I'm happy you are sharing this "excursion" you are taking into steam world. some of us other uninformed admirers will be interested in how you work through these systems that are foreign to many of us. Don't filter out the bad days. Do you have a general idea of the order you are tackling different systems and mechanical processes?
  22. Jeff, I think you are taking the right approach considering your circumstances. I circle back again to my comment above. The steam guys would do well to pair the sale of their cars with some mentorship, and pick the right buyer to carry the hobby forward. Keep sharing. john
  23. Steve, things seem to be trending older........I'm this close to letting the Lambo go.
  24. So Cool Ron. I believe the Greenbrier is featuring "working cars" this year. This would seem to fit right in with that theme........
