The back of the gauge housing where the gauge sits and makes contact was grey and powdery. I scuffed it up with 0000 steel wool until it was fresh metal again then tested the assembled gauge with lead wires before I put it back in the dash. I think just from sitting for 80 years the metal kind of corroded. Looking back I should of taken a picture of the back of the housing. When you put it back together make sure the Ivory plastic is not pressing on the needle. Test it opened and assembled before you put it back in the dash. I learned the hard way.

Thanks Matt and Morgan , With all this information I have a better understanding how this system works. 😁

Thanks for the great list of procedures. All the tests checked out. The problem ended up being that the gauge itself lost ground contact with gauge housing.

How do I test this gas gauge out of the car? All my previous tests led me to the gauge itself. Any information is appreciated . Nick

Wanted 1940 Buick gas gasoline gauge. AC part #1515367

Possibly a 225R75 16 . 225 is the width and 75 is the hight of the side wall. Thats a starting point, if you can find something taller and skinnier I think that would be better.

Thanks guys. If the bearing race 'cone" does creep or walk I think it would create a lot of heat. I could be wrong?
-
Thank you, I have N O S bearings. The new inner race still rotates.
-
My left front inner wheel bearing race "cone" that goes to the back of the spindle does not fit tight, its able to spin. Shouldn't it be pressed on? I would think it should be stationary. I know it is a separate part unlike later spindles that inner cone is actually part of the spindle. I tried a new old stock cone wondering if it would fit tight but that one is loose also. The one on the right side of the car is tight. Is this a problem? Do I need a new spindle? Whats the fix ? Please let me know your thoughts.
