  1. I thought "strike copper", using a cyanide to improve adhesion of a very thin coat as you describe, was basic, not acidic. Regardless, your comments on how to avoid excessive build are very helpful. How do you "clean" the pits before plating? I had difficulty fitting some replated items I bought together due to plating thickness.
  2. I always find it interesting when a front seat is reupholstered in a pattern not matching the back seat. This usually happens in the period when it's an old used car and not yet seen as collectible. Always looks shabby.
  3. Well, actually if there is more than one it's not "unique," and there is no such thing as "fairly unique." But usually we're happy if we don't see break/brake and axle/axel misused. So in the spirit of the thing, Adams-Farwell Rotary.
  4. A DS 21 Pallas was very much a luxury car in France. Competition would be the Big Rover 3.5, Mercedes 220/250 (although a DS was faster and bigger), maybe the top Peugeot if you were more conservative. "DS" in French sounds like the word for "goddess." The ride is great and the handling is better than the soft suspension makes you think it will be. The SM is more like a XJS
  5. No, I've always heard it was destroyed. This is the last iteration of a series of designs on this chassis. You can see the exploration of more horizontal grille work that led to the 1948-1950 design.
  6. I learned to leave the car with the seat backs tipped forwards. Helped a bit.
  7. not 100% sure for 1939, but Mopar used stepped wheel cylinders in this era - piston only comes out one side. Also, reverse threads on the wheel lugs on one side. You don't need to learn those things the way I did.
  8. The extra you pay for a SM over a DS is probably worth it in value. Equally quirky/costly to fix. The real gem is a Chapron DS, but good luck finding one. I wouldn't bother with a CX. I'd say the only other Citroen to consider would be a Traction Avant, but that is a different appeal.
  9. I think their answer is rationalization. Rhinebeck is closer to them than some of western PA
  10. I had a 41 Plymouth with the 201 in3 version and 50-55 was my comfort limit. Fuel consumption mid teens mpg. Acceleration leisurely to put it kindly.
  11. By all means, paint your truck any way you like. Do what makes you happy. But if you mean what you said (I doubt it) I'll try. Population 1 is Chevy trucks painted in 1990 with two stage paint of that time. Population 2 is Ford Mustangs painted (in 1969 or during a restoration?) in single stage paint. Take one sample from each population of perhaps 100,000. Draw a conclusion about the populations based on it. Peace
  12. While a high performance car by 1976-1977 standards, not much of one compared to later or earlier eras
  13. Do it as a favor to family or friend. Most old car insurance policies explicitly do not cover use for pay. Make very clear to the groomsmen that unapproved decorating will result in the loss of vital body parts. I've only been involved when I was also attending the wedding, so not boring at all - everybody is in a great mood. Be prepared for Murphy's law - last minute malfunctions. If you want to do it for hire, then set up as a business with the appropriate insurance. And if it's boring, well, it's your job.
  14. I'm not arguing with you, just saying you're mis-assigning cause. GM was converting to waterborne paint around that time. Lots of problems. A modern clear/base formulation works a lot better. Your two car comparison is not a valid comparison of the general approaches.
  15. You do realize that Naugahyde is just one company's brand name for their vinyl, yes?
  16. The issue with your paint is not that it is base plus clear. It's what base/clear was used, and how it was applied.
  17. The reverse is also true. The local library solved this by having two slots in the drive-through book return, car height and truck height.
  18. what ever came of the reproduction of the Mararajah I recall being promoted at St Johns a couple years ago?
  19. This year's field is more malaise era horsepower. Very weak.
  20. The traditional "plating" on plastic is a deposition on ABS. I believe there are companies serving the scale modeling hobby that do this. Billy K might be able to pipe in here.
