  4. I think VW beetles had them as long as they had a carburetor, maybe 'till '71?
  5. I don't think I was clear. What I was trying to say was that in '28 they seemed to pay a lot more attention to "ease of maintenance" thinking that the customer might be doing it. That's interesting about your Dodge manual...its the same year as my Chrysler.
  6. These cars have a lot of style! (way more text and pics in ad) https://phoenix.craigslist.org/wvl/cto/d/peoria-1952-kaiser-manhattan-door-sedan/7717042262.html Our Kaiser Manhattan shows 69,100 “A Box” miles. It is a standout Curelean Blue with a Turquoise Blue top. This 2-door sedan was one of only 2,000 that were made, which makes it more valuable than the 4-door version. We have tried to keep its originality intact, as apparently the previous owner(s) have done, too. Just to drive a 1952 Kaiser Manhattan in 2024 is an unforgettable experience. Mechanical-- (Any mechanical improvements were done by a professional mechanic.) six-cylinder, 226ci/115-hp motor 3-speed transmission on the column 6-volt electric system 69,100 miles (A Box miles) removed and cleaned radiator NOTE - We last drove this car in June, 2023. It was running very well. After we parked it on that date, the STARTER failed to function. Obviously, it won't start without a working STARTER. That's why we have discounted this car so much. This is an excellent opportunity to buy this car $2,000 to $3,000 less than its market value and put the starter in it yourself. If you have any questions, please let us know. 7. That's a very interesting factory option I was not aware of. Henry Ford wanted complete control of every component and they were the only automaker who produced their own glass, beginning in 1923. It don't remember when it was spun off, perhaps about the time they had to get rid on Motorcraft (1973?) but the last plant closed about 2008, although some glass is still be produced with the Carlite logo.
  8. A high school friend (class of '67) had one of these, in just about this condition, (except it ran). There was a big field behind the school and it became partially flooded in the winter. For some reason (actually because we were teen age boys) We decided to use it to do "spin outs". Another friend had a frog eye sprite and he drove out at about 30mph and cranked the wheel, spinning like a top. Then the friend with the Packard Limo did it and the same thing happened but in slow motion...a perfect demonstration of angular momentum.
  9. Thirteen years of automotive "advancement" and none of it was to the benefit of the mechanic. In '28, manufacturers still expected the owner to do all kinds of "maintenance" that a decade later would be firmly in the realm of professionals. I had a Chrysler '72 at one time, the manual had a section on differential bearing adjustment.
  10. Also some topics are a bit radioactive. I've learned to think twice and count to ten before mentioning those types of cars that re refueled by wire (don't want to say the name).
  11. 356 Porsches could flash their lights by pushing on the horn ring (only the button in the middle worked the horn if I remember right). All Porsches flashed their lights at each other until the about 1970. Now they only flash at other 356s, and there aren't many! I have a hot rodder neighbor who has a small light at the bottom of the grill on this A-V8. He told me it's a "Passing Light".
  12. At this price for an Airflow, you shouldn't expect much! https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/cto/d/lyons-1936-chrysler-airflow/7716385299.html 1936 CHRYSLER AIRFLOW SEDAN , BODY IS VERY SOUND AND INTACT , PREVUES OWNER STRIPPED THE PAINT OFF , THE CAR STILL ALL TOGETHER , ONLY FEW TRIMS OFF OF IT . INTERIOR LOOKS NICE AND INTACT , DASHBOARD LOOKS GOOD AND ALL THERE , IT HAS THE STRAIGHT EIGHT ENGINE UNDER THE HOOD WITH THE OVER DRIVE MANUEL TRANS . I PUT A 6 VOLT BATTERY TO SEE IF IT WILL CRANK , AND IT DID BUT NO SPARK TO GET HER FIRED UP AND RUNNING. IT COMES WITH EXTRTA PARTS AND AIR CLEANER . SOLD AS IS . note : I have noticed the last three digits of the vin number on the title do not match the ones on the car . this is could be corrected by the local DMV . (708) 288-2588
  13. Here's an arcane system from the dim past. Pre WWII, French heavy trucks had a horn located in the cab which was connected by a hose to another on near the back bumper. The purpose was to allow the driver to hear a car behind honking, at which point they were supposed to pull over. I wonder how accommodating the truckers were...
  14. Almost a year later and still out there at $18,900. I see that the expensive Riley Head motor has been replaced with a stock one! https://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/cto/d/chandler-1929-model-speedster-boat-tail/7717860835.html 1929 Model A Speedster boat tail, highly collectible wooden boat tail, engine is period correct Model A 4 cylinder. 15. Looks like a prewar car you could drive and enjoy. https://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/d/davis-1941-cadillac-series-63/7717699003.html It is a manual “3 on the tree” with a flathead V8 (that runs amazing!) The mileage right now is 2,719 as the odometer was reset when the car was restored about 10 years back. Very rare model and was only produced for two years. Had a very high end restoration about 10 years ago/ everything was done to a high standard. Is an absolute beauty!! No rust what's so ever Drives very quietly and comfortably. Drives from Sacramento to San Jose no issues. Recently replaced the muffler, battery and the gaskets for the intake/exhaust manifolds, crossover pipe, downpipe and water pump. It also comes with the original antenna (photographed in trunk photo). There the right rear window is cracked. It needs the water pump either rebuilt or replaced and the clutch adjusted. I will have the clutch adjusted prior to selling. If you have any questions, feel free to message me. Price can be discussed in person after seeing the car. email: f0ce5d51dcb53d96bf79f1136c72601c@sale.craigslist.org
  16. That is a fascinating fact! I guess no one had headlights on their horse, so why would a car need them?
  17. 19. I don't think that old title is a huge problem. I bought a Simca a couple of years ago that was last on the road in 1979, and the title had a wrong serial number and said it was a '54 when it was obviously a '51. The only thing on the car that matched the paperwork was the license plate. I also had a "Statement of Facts" DMV form that the seller provided with what he knew about the car (which wasn't a lot, his father bought it in '78). I printed information from the internet that showed that my serial number corresponded to 1951, and after the inspecting CHP officer verified my information, it all got squared away. As far as SHOULD you do it...personally, some of my most rewarding times in the garage are when I hit a brick wall, and have to find a way around it. If you think the PROCESS will be fun, and are not worried sick about finished product, GO FOR IT!
  20. Not completely original, but I like it! (much more text and pics in ad) Possibly the husband has passed.... https://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/cto/d/san-diego-1941-chevrolet/7712575622.html My husband, Jerry Mambretti did most of the restoration I have receipts, invoices, records and a 12x12 coffee table photo book I made that document what he did. I also have 5 boxes of original parts along with extra upholstery material. The car has all original gauges and radio. The radio was converted to 12 volts. It has all new wiring, new front and rear glass, rebuilt early turn signals Jeep blackout lights and taillights and a 1986 Jeep Wagoneer rear end. We chose this rear end because it has the same lug pattern as the original wheels. The suspension was rebuilt in Los Angeles. The 235 ci engine is out of our daughter’s 1955 Chevy. The headliner and sun visors are from LeBarron Barney in Mass. Other than the military brake and blackout lights, it is in its original configuration. (619) 602-6956
  21. Sad that cars like this fall into the hands of someone who can't even count the number of spark plugs. https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/cto/d/downey-1940-graham-hollywood/7717066754.html 1940 Graham Hollywood, original supercharged 4 cylinder engine and transmission. 23. This would be a fair price if it were running but it's not....(more pics in ad) https://stockton.craigslist.org/cto/d/tracy-1942-studebaker-champion/7714970013.html Nice project car, very solid! All original Clean title in my name and on non op at DMV Priced to sell! Perfect for hot rod or gasser Call for more info $9500 OBO (510) 331-2036
  24. That's really interesting! I would be concerned that overheating the oil would break down the lubricant qualities. Not a problem for modern synthetics, but seems like a bad idea in 1927, when oil could have been castor-based. Perhaps it only got hot enough to drive out moisture?
  25. Here's the new ad... seems like a decent deal! https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/d/el-sobrante-1940-cadillac-lasalle-sedan/7716671563.html email: 91a22d29c1dd399abaa8f627e1d0477a@sale.craigslist.org
