Since it is the 4th of July (Have a safe 4th...... please!) and I can't call J.C. Taylor, I thought I would ask for info from the many experts on our forum.

Background:

As many of you know, Cindy and I own 3 Monte Carlos. As of now, only 2 are AACA eligible due to age. All 3 are insured by J.C. Taylor.

Current Situation:

My 22 year old daughter April is very serious about purchasing a 87 Monte Carlo SS from a very close friend of mine. I AM familiar with all of the age of vehicle rules with J.C. Taylor. I AM also aware that no one under the age of 25 may drive my vehicles. Thus, I'm assuming that I and my daughter are going to have great difficulty getting classic/antique insurance that will permit her to drive the Monte for cruise/show purposes. This WILL NOT be a daily driver. She has her own daily driver.

Question:

How does the youth (such as my daughter) get involved in our hobby if they can't get insurance or can't drive any of my insured autos with J.C. Taylor? Maybe I'm missing something here...... any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Maybe I'm missing something..... putting a 1987 Monte SS Show Car on a regular insurance policy doesn't seem like the way to go....... they will only insure at "book value"...... correct?

John, it is my <span style="font-weight: bold">understanding</span> that JC Taylor has a way to insure the car as collectible. They do it on a individual basis if they are comfortable with the insured and that the car is truly meant to be collectible and not a daily driver. This is my recollection from a previous conversation with them but I may not have stated this correctly.

I believe what Steve was saying is that they will look at it on an indivdual basis. If they feel comfortable with your daughter driving the car, and that the car is not going to be a daily driver then they might insure it with her being the driver.

You might have to send them proof that she owns another car in her name or a copy of her driving record from the DMV. Just give them a call tomorrow.

Disclaimer: I do truly appreciate all that J.C. Taylor does for the AACA, the local regions, the membership, and the hobby.

Ok, here is the scoop..........

There really are no limits to the unlimited amount of possible limitations that could limit one's unlimited fleet of Monte Carlos. After discussing all of the possibilities that are possible, but not probable, it is still possible to own a Monte Carlo and all of the endless possibilities that come with ownership. However, one should be aware that the unlimited possibilities could be limited in the possible event that limitless fun is a slight possibility........................

Ummmmmmmm, could you put that in writing for me?????????

If memory serves me correctly, I had my silver Monte insured through Hagerty before my 25th birthday as a collectible vehicle. As another option, you may be able to get agreed value insurance for April through All State, State Farm, etc.

BTW ... Is she considering Harry's car???

No, that wasn't the exact response. However, after being put on hold about 5 times so that Mary Ellen could go talk to Paul Jakubowski the underwriter, and Mary Ellen relaying the questions to him and the answers to me............. that is what is sounded like on my end.

I did ask to speak with Paul directly......... that did not happen. Now, maybe Paul was very busy at the time.......... but, they should have taken my number and called me back when he had more time to speak with me directly.

Yes, it sounds as if they do things "case by case". However, I see none of what I was told in writing. Will the first person on this board that feels very comfortable with any insurance company that states things verbally but it is not included in the written policy please raise their hand.............

Not trying to violate any policy..........

I'm guessing this thread is now boarderline......... I was/am trying to seek info from our membership on their experiences with all insurance companies and how to involve the youth in our hobby and still have our vehicles insured. In the process, I was trying to update everyone to what I found out yesterday.......... but, I'm still not certain what I found out. LOL...........

Robert Wallace and Joe Bonner from JC Taylor Underwriting reply: We have contacted Mr. Harvey with respect to his daughter's potential purchase of a classic Monte Carlo SS and discussed the possibility of our insuring the vehicle. A portion of the conversation involved some of the underwriting issues that must invariably be faced in such cases. Fortunately, however, these issues have been satisfactorily addressed and resolved in this case, and we will be able to provide insurance for his daughter should she choose to purchase the vehicle. We are keenly aware of the interest in the hobby among younger folks, and the need to cultivate and support that interest. To that end, we review and discuss each of these "youthful driver" matters individually, as there are many factors that require consideration before a reasonable and equitable underwriting decision can be made.

Welcome and thank you for the direct post about young people, insurance, old cars and helping them mesh in this great hobby. There is a whole page on this site dedicated to the young people already interested and those that might become interested. If this great hobby is not only to survive but to thrive we must make them feel welcome.

It is nice to know that there is a company willing to weigh each situation on it's own merit and not just give a blanket "no". Two thumbs up for JC Taylor. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

John, although I am jumping on the wagon late, we have our cars insured through Grundy. Among our cars insured, one of them is a 1987 Mustang GT. Our '87 Mustang was bought new, and it has 12,000 miles on it. Although Grundy didn't want to insure the '87, they were given the choice of insuring everything, or insuring nothing. In our case, they accepted the '87.

As long as you have several cars and your daughter has a good driving record, I can't see anyone having an issue with it.

Allstate (my company) totalled the damaged trailer. The estimate was about $3500 in parts and $5,000 in labor.........

They gave me a very fair settlement and I have purchased a Featherlite Enclosed. The new trailer has a slight V-nose and is 1,000 pounds lighter. I now get an extra 1.25 miles per gallon..... not much, but every little bit helps!

I'm glad for you John. I felt bad when that happened, but fortunately the car wasn't hurt, and the insurance company didn't try to give you the short end of the stick.

As for the V-nose, we bought a used one last year, and after having one, we'll never go without a V-nose. Ours has the ramp that drops down. It's nice because when we get to a meet, we can drop the ramp, roll the Harley out, and use that for getting around town. That way we can leave the car in the trailer, leave the truck hooked to the trailer, and buzz around town with the motorcycle and still get 30+ miles a gallon.

It's also nice because we can get on both sides of the car easier and get better light on both sides of the car.

After many many years with J.C. Taylor and zero claims and a perfect driving record they elected not insure my Corvette or Amphicar. Their explanation defies logic so I won't get into that here. I am now a totally satisfied Hagerty customer whose old vehicles can be driven without milage or use restrictions.

This post is not intended to degrade Taylor or Grundy, just present the true facts so other hobbyist are informed.
